EDWARD J. HORNECKER, OF AUGUSTA, ILLINOIS.
SILO.
Application filed June 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. HoRNEoKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Augusta, county of Hancock, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silos, of which the following is a specifica- Ition.
My invention relates to silos and more specifically to silo chutes, and has for its object the production of a silo chute which will be of simple and economical construction, one which may be readily and easily set up or applied to a silo, and one which will be eiiicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a silo equipped with a chute embodying the invention,
Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sections taken on lines mm and g respectively of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4: is a detail section illustrating the connection of the top closure plate of the chute with the lateral walls of the latter.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, is applied to a silo 1 of the usual cylindrical formation,
the same being provided with a conical roof 2. Provided in one side of the silo is a vertically extending door opening 3 which is surrounded by a wooden door casing 4.
The door opening 3 is inclosed by the chute A which extends from the roof of the silo co-eXtensively with said door opening. Said chuJte is formed of a plurality of sheet metal sections semi-circular in cross section, each section being formed of two half parts 5 and 5 the inner longitudinal edges of which are overlapped and rigidly connected by rivets 6. The sections are arranged with their ends in overlapping relation, the overlapping portions being securely fastened together by means of bolts 7 and cooperating nuts 8. Upon the inner side of the chute at the joints between the sections and also at the upper and lower Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 191%. Serial No. 32,337.
the door casing 1 which project beyond the outer surface of the silo, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The upper end of the chute is closed by a closure plate 11 which is securely fastened to the lateral walls of the chute by means of angular straps 12 with which cooperate bolts 13 and nut-s 14L. Said closure plate is preferably inclined at the same angle as the roof of the silo, the edges thereof extending beyond the lateral walls of the chute in order to effectually shed the rain.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
aving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
The combination of a silo having a vertically extending door opening; vertically. extending door-casing bars provided at and defining the sides of said door opening and projecting outwardly beyond the outer surface of the silo; and a chute substantially semi-circular in cross section arranged upon the outer side of the silo inclosing said opening and having its longitudinal edge portions engaging against the outer sides of the protruding portions of said casing bars and secured thereto, substantially as de scribed.
, In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD J. HORNEOKER.
