Specification of Letters Patent. A11 27,
Application filed March 2 3, 1917, Serial No. 1 56,809. Renewed July 1918. Serial no. 245,405.
Means, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to improvements in hat fastening means, and particularly to types worn by ladies in which the hats are engaged with the hair of the head.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means which may be applied tov hats of the ordinary style and fashion,
which are adapted to be engaged or disengaged with the hair of the wearer so that the hat is held firmly and securely the application being made with entire ease and facility.
A second object is to provide such means which may be applied at any desired time to a hat as indicated and which are inexpensive to manufacture, durable in their na ture, and easy to manipulate.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown-in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view looking from the underside of an ordinary hat.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device in its preferred form.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
gig. 4 is a top plan view of the fastener, an
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view showing the relation of parts.
Fig. 1 shows an-ordinary hat, the same being composed of a brim 10, crown 11, and top 12. Obviously two or more of the fasteners may be used as desired, the same consisting of a comb-like plate comprised of flexible material having a rigid bar portion 15, from which extend a plurality of teeth 16, the same being relatively sharp or pointed at their lower end and having between them spaces 17 to receive the hair in the manner of an ordinary comb.
The outer ends 27 of the rigid bar 25 are amt sTATEs rATNT OFFICE. i
oflset and rounded, the same being adapted to be secured to the crown of the hat through sewing or like means in passing through the perforations 28,-as best shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the device is positively attached in the crown of the hat in such manner as to be partially concealed from observation when in a raised position and is capable of being putinto use by raising or lowering the comb element with respect to the bar 25 rigid with the interior of the hat.
It will also be evident that different curvatures may be given the comb 15 by reason of engaging the lugs 26 with respect to the bevel edges 22 of the comb structure.
In operation, the bar or bars 25 having been secured in the desired position within the hat, together with the attached comb, two or more of which may be used as desired, depending somewhat upon the shape of the hat, the head of the wearer, and in the .manner of which the hair is dressed, the extending end of the comb teeth are pushed up so as to engage with the hair, whereupon the hat will be held firmly in position without the use of pins or other securing means. c
When it is desired to release the hat, the comb teeth are drawn down, freeing the hair, and allowing the hat to be removed.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hat fastener comprisinga flexible plate provided with a plurality of teeth extending in one direction, the outermost teeth being of increased width, and having a longitudinal slot therethrough, a flexible bar extending through the mentioned slot in the end teeth, and hooked lugs formed with said bar contiguous to its ends adapted to engage with said end teeth whereby said comb plate may be adjusted in a secured position.
2. A hat fastener comprising a flexible plate having a pair of widely disposed slotted elements formed upon each of its ends, a plurality of comb teeth formed with said plate between said end elements, bev- 10 eled edges formed upon the exterior of said end elements, a flexible bar passing through the mentioned slots, and a plurality of hook shaped lugs formed. with said flexible bar adapted to engage with said beveled edges. 15 In testimony whereof I have aliixed my signature this ninth day of March, 1917. MARIE TANNLER.
