Description
ADOLPH BALLENBERG, or NEW YORK, N. Y,; rAumE BALLENBERG EXEGUTRIX or SAID ADOLPH BALLENBEBG, nnonessn.
ATTACHING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADoLrH BALLENBERG, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New vYork and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inAttaching Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attaching devices and particularly to devices of this class designed for use in connecting separate parts of furniture or other articles in order that said parts may be easily disconnected for shipment, movement or other purposes, and quickly and easily re-connected whenever necessary; and,the object of the invention is to provide an improved device or construction of the class specified which does not involve the use of tools or implements of any kind or class, and which is primarily designed for use in connecting blackboards,
back mirrors, or back panel constructions with dressers, tables, desks or other articles,
but which maybe used for other purposes and in other relations. p
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom-v panying drawing forms a part, in which-the separate parts of my improvement'are des ignated bysuitable reference characters in each of the views. and in which Figure 1 is a back view of an ordinary dresser having a top back mirror frame connected therewith by means of my improved attaching or connecting device;
Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing onlya part of the construction shown in.
Fig. l and showing said part on an enlarged scale;
. 'Fig. 3 a section on the line 3.- 3 of Fig. 2;. and v Fig. 4 a face view of one of my improved attaching or connecting devicedetachedand the separate parts of which are in a different position from that shownin Figs. 1 and 2..
Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged detail views showing a modified form of attaching or connecting device.
In the drawing forming part of this specification' I have shown at a an ordinary dresser having a top table a? on which is placed aback transverse molding Or other strip a and said dresser ,isprovided with Specification of Letters Patent. I a-tented Aug, Application file'd August 14, 11917. Serial u 1se,os9.
thensual back corner standards a and with a top back attachment'b, comprising a mir ror or mirror frame 6 and side posts 72 to which the mirror or mirror frame b is' pivoted in the usual manner, as shown at b, and the molding or other strip a if employed, may be connected with the back attachment 6 instead of with the top of the body of the dresser.
In connecting the attachment 6 with the dresser, or the back'framework thereof, I provide an attaching device 0, two of which are employed, and this attaching device comprises an oblong back plate 0 and a correspondingly formed front plate 0 and the side edges of the back plate are folded over the side edges of the front plate to form longitudinal keepersc 'in which the front plate is movable longitudinally of the back plate, and said front and'back plates are also connected by means of a pin cl secured centrally of the back plate and pass ing through a slot 0 in the front plate and provided with a head 0?, this construction being designed to keep'the separate parts together'whe'n not in use, or to prevent'th'eir disconnection.
The back plate is also provided at spaced intervals with circular apertures'c four of which are shown, and the front plate is provided with corresponding apertures c", and theapertures 0 in the front'plate areprovided with upwardly directed extensions or recesses 0 and the front plate is provided at the top thereof with an outwardly of forwardly directed thumb and. finger piece a which forms a handle by means of which said front plate may be manipulated.
In the use of my improved attaching or connecting device, as shown in the drawing, two of them areemployed and are secured to thebacks of the back corner standards a of the dresser and to the backs of the posts 79 of the attachment '6 by means of screws 6 which are passed through the apertures c and 0 in the front and back plates of the attaching or connecting devices, clearly'shown in Fig. 3, and this operation is performed with the front plate 0 in its raised. position as shown in Fig. 4, after which said front plate is lowered and the shanks of the screws 6 enter the extensions or recesses c of the apertures 0" in said front plate and this operation locks the parts of the attaching or connecting devices together and also locks the attachment 6 to the dresser, as will be readily understood, but
in order to disconnect the attachment I) from the dresser, all that is necessary is to raise the front plates 0 of the attaching or connecting devices into the position shown in Fig. 4- in which position the heads of the screws 6 may be passed through the apertures c and 0 and the attaching or connecting devices may be removed and the attachment 6 may be disconnected from the dresser and in reconnecting the attachment 1) with the dresser all that is necessary is to place the attachment 6 in proper position and move the parts of the attaching or connecting devices into the position shown in Fig. 4, or pass said attaching or connecting devices backwardly over the heads of the screws 6 and slide the front plates 0 .of the attaching or connecting devices downwardly.
Instead of originally connecting the attaching devices with the parts I) and a, .as hereinbefore described, the locality of the screws 6 may be fixed by placing the attaching devices in position and then marking the screw spaces through the apertures 0 and 0 and then removing the attaching devices and screwing the screws 6 into position in the parts?) and a after which the attaching devices may be placed in position by moving them backwardly over the heads of the screws, or in such manner that the heads of the screws will pass through the apertures 0 and 0 The construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 4: inclusive, except that I provide means for locking the plates 0 and 0 in connection with the screws 6 to prevent any possible movement of the parts wand Z2 vertically or otherwise when the plates 0 and c are in their locked positions as shown in Fig. 6, and in accomplishing this result I preferably place the apertures c and 0 at one side of the longitudinal center of the plates 0 and c and provide the apertures 0 with laterally extending recesses 0 which are adapted to receive the shanks of the screws 6. In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the apertures 0 in the front plate 0 are not provided with the vertical recesses 0 but are provided with laterally and vertically directed recesses 0 which are approximately-L-shaped in form, as clearly shown in said figure.
The operation of attaching a device of the class specified, constructed in the manner shown or indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, to the separate parts a and b or the standards at and 5 thereof and the screws 6 connected therewith will be the same as the attachment device, or the plates 0 and 0 thereof is moved laterally to bring the shanks of the screws 6 into the recesses 0 and 0 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5, after which the front plate 0 is moved longitudinally of the back plate 0 to bring the parts into the position shown in Fig. 6, in which operation the shanks of the screws 6 move in the vertical portions of the recesses 0 and as will be readily understood ona consideration of Fig. 6 of the drawing, the plates 0 and c are locked against vertical or lateral movement on the screws 6 until the front plate 0 is again moved into the position shown in Fig. 5.
In the accompanying drawing and specification I have shown the preferred forms of my improved attaching device or devices and have described the preferred method of operating the same,'but my invention is not limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The herein described means for connecting two parts which consists in providing said parts with protruding headed members and an attaching device comprising two plates, means for connecting said plates to permit of a longitudinal movement thereof one upon another, both of said plates being provided with apertures through which said headed members are adapted to pass, and the apertures in one of said plates being provided with L-shaped extensions or recesses, the extensions or recesses in. said apertures being adapted to receive the shanks of the protruding headed members, i r g 2. The herein described means for connecting two parts which consist in provid ing said parts with protruding headed members, and an attachingdevice comprising two plates, means for connecting said 1 plates to permit of the movement thereof one upon another, both of said plates being provided with apertures through which said headed members are adapted to pass, the apertures in the back plate being provided 120 at one side thereof with extensions or recesses and the apertures in the frontplate being provided on the corresponding side thereof with L-shaped extensions or recesses, the extensions or recesses of the apertures .in both the front and back plates being means for connecting said plates to permit of their movement one upon another, said plates being provided with spaced apertures, the apertures in the back plate being provided at one side thereof with extensions or recesses and the apertures in the front plate being provided on the corresponding sides thereof with L-shaped extensions or recesses.
4. An attaching device of the class described, comprising front and back oblong plates mounted one upon another, the back plate being provided with longitudinal side edge keepers in which the front plate is longitudinally movable and both of said plates being provided with spaced apertures, the apertures in the front plate being provided at one side thereof with extensions or recessesranging longitudinally of and parallel with the side edge keepers of the back plate and a rivet secured centrally of the back plate and passing through an elongated slot in the front plate for holding said plates together but permitting their movement one upon another.
5. An attaching device of the class described, comprising front and back oblong plates mounted one upon another, the back plate being provided with longitudinal side edge keepers in which the front plate is longitudinally movable and both of said plates being provided with apertures spaced longitudinally thereof, the apertures in the front plate being provided at one side edge thereof with extensions or recesses ranging longitudinally of and parallel with the side keepers of the back plate, and means on said back plate and passing through said front plate for limiting the longitudinal movement of said plates one upon another and for holding said plates together.
