Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed may 16, 1917. Serial No. 168,908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. PHELPs, a citizen of the .United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Arch-Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and-exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide an 'arch support for insertion in ashoe, the support having horizontally extending pockets with openings through which pads may be inserted to correct the position of the foot, and thereby relieve the foot from abnormal strains and assistin remedying ailments. J v
The support is preferably provided with a pocket under the instep; a pocket at the front of the instep in which a pad may be inserted to relieve pressure on the ball of the foot, and two pockets one at each side of the either side of the heel as desired. Pads 7 are inserted in the pocket under the instep to support the arch.
Additional objects of the invention will v appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the-drawings similar reference characters denote similar parts in all the views, in which-- i Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my arch support showing its position relatively to a foot; x
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the arch support;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line of Fig. 1. I i
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that there is a body member 5 which extends under the instep, the body member 5 extendingif desired forwardly to the toes of the foot; -The edges 6 of the body member 5 are shaved so that the sides of the body member 5 will curve upwardly to fit the foot Disposed against the body member 5 there is a member 7, the rear of this member 7 resting on the forward edge of a member, 8 and the forward portion of the member 7 together with its tongue 9 resting on a member 10. The
shape, and any foot at the heel and the transversely at 11 and 12, the transverse canton;
WILLIAM: s. PHELPS, or PORTLAND, OREGON.
Patented July 1c, 1918.
stitches 11 passing through the rear of the member 10, and the transverse stitches 12 passing through the forward portion of the member 8. The outer side of the member 7 is also secured to. the body member 5 by stitches13 so that a pocket is formed by the ,member 7 and the body member 5, in which pads 14 may be disposed as desired to raise the body member 5 at the instep, it being possible to slip these pads 14: into the pocket through the inner side 15 of-the arch support. The sides of the member 7 are shaved in the same manner as are the sides of the body member '5, so that the sides of the member 7 may curve with the sides of the body member 5 when the body member 5 fits the foot.
The sides of the member 10 are secured to the body member 5 by stitches 16, it being possible to slip the pad 17 into a pocket formed by the member 10 and the body member 5, to relieve certain parts of the foot from abnormal pressure. The member 8 is secured by stitching tothe body member 5 along a longitudinal center line 18 extending rearwardly from the transverse stitches 12-. The transverse stitches 12 and the stitching at 18 form two pockets 19 one at each side of the heel of the body member 5, so that a pad 20 may be disposed in either one of these pockets 19 to, raise either side of the heel as may be found desirable. The tongue 9 is provided to fill in the hollow of the foot, thereby assisting in the support of the foot. d It will beunderstood that the pads 14, 17 and 20 may be manufactured of any desired desired number may be used. The position of .the pads in the pock ets may be changed either longitudinally or I rear of the second member, the third member having a forwardly extending tongue to form with the second member .a pocket,
there being a transverse row of stitches disposed between the body of the third member and its tongue for securing the rear of 5 the second member and the front of the body of the third member to the first member, mthere being, a. second transversei row of first member.
stitches for securing the rear of the third member to the first member, and there being rows of stitches at the sides of the first mem- 10 ber for securing the sides of the second member and one side of the third member to the WILLIAM s. PHELPS.
