To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, DAVID A. GEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Astoria, in the county of Clatsop and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in locks; and the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel lock which is especially adapted to be used on doors.
As the primary object, is contemplated by this invention to construct a lock the casing of which is desirably of a tubular configuration whereby it can be readily arranged in acorrespondingly shaped recess that has been previously bored in the edge of a door while an anchor plate carried by the casing can be easily anchored on the edge of the door to retain the casing in position and obviate the employment of a large number of fastening devices usually necessary when mounting a lock of the present conventional type.
It is an equally important object of the present invention to provide novel means for operating the latch member, improved means being arranged in conjunction therewith for normally holding the latch member in a latched position.
The invention, as a further improvement, embraces the provision of novel means for releasably holding the latching means in a closed or locked position, saidmeans operating independently of the operating means for the latch member whereby to consequently prevent unauthorized persons from operating the latch. p
More specific features of this invention consist in the provision of means for guiding the latch member during movement; the peculiar construction of the rack bar and disk which facilitates and guides the movement of the latchinember; and the means for mounting the wedge which serves to lock the latch member in a closed position.
Among: the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view of compactness, the number of parts of which are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low, and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the detailed description below, which is to be read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and wherein I disclose the preferred embodiment of my invention for the purpose of illustration.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my invention in a locked position.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the several figures of the drawing, I provide the casing 1 which may be and preferably is constructed from one piece of metal bent to assume a tubular conformation in order that it may be effectively mounted in a correspondingly shaped recess in the edge of a door (not shown). The inner end of the casing is closed as indicated by the numeral '2 while a stud 3 is formed integrally therewith and centrally thereof for a purpose to be described. A securing plate 4 is connect ed to the outer edges of the casing in any suitable manner while fastening devices, such as screw 5, are adapted to engage the edge of a door or the like to anchor the casing in the proper position. This plate is provided with a rectangular opening 6 in which is slidably mounted a latch member 7 having a beveled outer face 8 to facilitate engagement of the same with a suitable keeper.
For the purpose of operating the latch I provide rack bar 9 one end of which is bent at an angle and pivoted through the medium of a suitable pin 10 between the spaced arms 11 which are integral with the inner edge of the latch member. The opposite ends of the bar 9 has a disk 12 integral. therewith and arranged in close relation with the inner walls of the casing so as to support and guide the movement of the arm. A spindle 13 is journaled in suitable bearings 14 on the inner surface of the casing. As is apparent the casing is provided with oppositely arranged openings 15 adjacent the bearings 14:, said openings allowing a shank 16 mounted in the spindle to project beyond the sides of the casing. A. knob 17 of any conventional type is carried by the outer end of the shank whereby the spindle 13' may be rotated. A cog wheel 18 is mounted about the spindle teeth thereof, being arranged to engage the teeth of the rack bar 9 and draw the latch member within the casing. In order that the latch member will normally be arranged in a projected position I have provided my improved resilient means which in the present instance consists of a helical spring 19 the respective ends of which are arranged about the stud 3 and another stud 20 arranged centrally of and integral with the outer face of the disk 12. A stop 21 extends from the lug 20 and is adapted at times to engage the lug 3 and limit the inward movement of the latch member 8.
In order to lock the latch member in a closed position I have pivotally mounted a dog 22 adjacent the outer end of the casing through the medium of a suitable pin 23. A leaf spring 2% has one end mounted about the pin 28 while the outer end is arranged in engagement with dog 22 and normally holds the dog in abutting relation with the casing. The casing is provided at a diametrically opposite point with openings 25 and a spindle 26 is rotatably mounted in bearings 27, the latter being arranged integral with the inner walls of the casing and ad jacent to the openings 25 so that a suitable key may be inserted in the keyhole 28 in one end of the spindle 26. This spindle 26 is also provided intermediate its ends with a recess 29. A link 30 is pivoted within the recess and eccentrically of the longitudinal axis of the spindle by means of a pin 82. A wedge 31 has its inner end pivoted to the outer end of the link 80 so that it will be readily engaged under the dog 22 and lift and force the dog into engagement with the latch member 8, the wedge frictionally e11- gaging the casing and the dog so as to effectively hold the latch member in a closed or locked position. As it is apparent when a suitable key (not shown) is inserted in the key hole 28 and the spindle 26 rotated the latch member will be either released or locked according to the direction in which the spindle is rotated.
The operation of the invention may be reviewed as follows Assuming that the device is in the position as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings and it is desired. to withdraw the bolt a suitable key (not shown) when inserted in j the key hole 28 and turned to the left will cause the link to pull the wedge 31 from engagement with the dog 22 whereupon the spring 21 will force the dog into inoperative position. Now by turning the knob toward the right the spindle 13 will be rotated and inasmuch as the gear 18 is in mesh with the rack bar 9 the latch member 7 will vention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described, which comprises a casing, a latch member slidably mounted in one end of the casing, means for operating the latch member, a pivotally mounted and resiliently actuated dog adapted to engage with the latch mem ber, and means for releasably holding the dog in an engagement with the latch member for locking said member, said means including a locking device and a plurality of links, one of the links having the dog mounted at its free end.
2. A device of the character described including a casing, a latch member slidably mounted in one end thereof, means for operating the latch member, a pivotally resiliently mounted dog in the casing and arranged adjacent the latch member, a rotatably mounted spindle in the casing, a link eccentrically connected to the spindle, and a wedge member pivoted to the end of the link and arranged to engage the dog and force the dog into locking engagement with the latch member.
3. A member of the character described, comprising a casing, a latch member slidably disposed in the casing and adapted to project therefrom, means for operating the latch member, a locking dog movably mounted in the casing adapted to engage with the latch member, means normallytending to move and retain the dog in an ineffective position, and actuating means arranged in the casing for moving and retaining said dog in engagement with the latch to hold the latter in locked position, said actuating means including a link carrying the dog at its outer end.
4:. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a latch member slidably mounted on the casing and adapted to project therefrom, a locking dog mounted in the casing adjacent the latch member, means for normally tending to move and retain the dog in an ineffective position, a wedge member arranged in the casing for engagement with the dog to move it into engagement with the latch member for holding the latter in a locked position, and means in the casing for actuating said wedge.
5. A device of the character described comprising an elongated casing, a latch member slidably mounted in the casing and adapted to project from one end thereof, a rack bar arranged within the casing and at one side thereof and having connection with said latch, a spindle journaled in the easing and having a gear thereon meshing With said rack, a locking dog disposed in the easing adjacent the latch member and normally held out of engagement therewith, and actuating means for -moving the dog in engagement with the latch and arranged in the casing opposite said rack bar, and a key actuated spindle journaled in the casing and having connection with said dog actuating means.
6. A device of the character described, which comprises a casing, a latch member slidably mounted in the casing, and having one end adapted to project therefrom said' member including a rack portion, a spindle having a gear thereon, said gear being capable of cooperating with the rack, a locking mechanism including a barrel, a plurality of connected links, one end of one of the links being connected to the locking mechanism, a locking dog pivotally inounted at the end of another link, said dog being adapted to cooperate with the latch member, said locking mechanism being adapted on rotation to move the dog to permit the latch member to be drawn Within the casmg.
