1 Application filed February 28, 1918. Serial No. 219,592.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ZAREMBA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, having declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Beds, of
which the following is a specification;
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a bed structure that is simple in construction, easy and inexpensive to manufacture and arranged for automatically folding. together the main portions thereof upon releasing the parts from their operative open arrangement.
1 A further obj ectof the device is the pro vision of a bed in the form of a foldable crib designed for maintenance in its open operative arrangement and automatically closed when desired in compact formation for such purposes as storage and transportation.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a vertical transverse sectional view of the device:
Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof:
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same:
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the bed in its closed arrangement: and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an end portion of the bottom thereof.
An embodiment of the invention is herein illustrated in the general form of a.crib 10 having upright longitudinal sides 11 and 12 with foldable ends 13 connected therebetween while a spring or bed bottom 14 is operatively associated with the said sides and ends, forming a complete bed structure.
The corner posts 15 are provided for the I bed, one of said posts being arranged for Ali each end of the sides 11 and 12, casters 16 beingpreferably arranged upon the bottoms of the posts 15 and balls ofornamentation 17 being arranged upon the tops thereof.
A beam 18\is inwardly carried by each of the posts 15 at the ends of the side 11 while end frames 19 are hinged to the beams 18 adapted for inward hinging movement and having similar end frames 19 hinged to their free ends and to the opposite corner posts 15 at the ends of the opposite side 12 of the bed. The frames 19 and 19 are centrally connected together by hinges 20, it

being understood that each end 13 of the bed is thereby arranged for folding inwardly .toward each other and between the aforementioned sides 11 and 12, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
eaf springs 21 are secured as at 22 upon the inner faces of the bottom rails 23 of each of the bed sides 11 and 12 and have their free ends arranged within grooves 24 upon the bottom rails 25 of each of the end sections 19 and 19. A retaining staple 26 may be positioned upon the rails 25 over the straps21 and it will be understood that the said straps 21 being formed of spring metal are normally of U-shaped arrangement so that the springs 21 tend to bring the oppo-- site end portions of the springs adjacent each other and with the sections 19 of the ends 13 positioned adjacent the bed side 11 and the sections 19 of the ends substantially in contact with the bed side 12 as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawin s. I The bed bottom 14 is arranged with a rectangular frame 27 vhaving a loop 28 adjacent its opposite corners for journaling upon a rod 29 secured between the beams 18 adjacent the lower ends thereof. Coiled springs 30 are arranged upon the rod 29 adjacent its opposite ends with the inner ends 31 of the springs 30 anchored in the adjacent bottom. rail 23 of the side 11 while the free end portions 32 of the springs '30 are positioned within longitudinal grooves 33 in the end rails 34 of the bed bottom frame W. A spring-pressed latch 35 is carried by the frame 27 upon the side thereof opposite the spring 30 adapted'for engaging a keepernotch 36 in the lower rail 23 of the opposite.
When the device is open ready for use, as v illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the latch 35 retains the bottom 14 in-- the manner just described, and upon releasing the latch 35, the springs 30 elevate the bottom 14 swinging the bottom upwardly be: tween the beams 18 and against the bed side 11. This removal of the bottom 14 from its holding position between the ends 13, releases the end sections 19 and 19 permitting sections 19 and 19 inwardly against each other and thereby bringing the sides 11 and 12 toward each other and against the said end sections 19 and 19 arranged in their folded relations therebetween. lihe bed is opened by substantially reversing the folding operation above described, the'sides l1 and 12 being forced apart and placing the springs 21 under tension while the bed bottom 14 is forced downwardly into its horizontal position between the ends 13 .and latch 35 engaged in its keeper-notch 36; retaining the bed in its operative arrangement set up for use. Retaining hooks 37 are pivoted to the end posts of the sides 11 and 12 for engaging over pins 38sarranged upon the end posts 15 of the correspondingly opposite side for detachably connectingthe sides of the bed together and further maintaining the structure in its folded arrangement. The bed may be quickly folded when desired and is especially serviceable where a quickly folding structure is required while the operation of unfolding the bed for use is also readily and quickly accomplished.
when the device is operatively arranged,

means adapted'for retaining the bottom in its open arrangement, springs enga g'the said bottom adapted for automatica 1y closing the same between the said supporting members upon releasing the said retaining means, and closing springs for the ends connected between the sections of the ends and the said sides, whereb the ends are adapted for automatically fol iug between the sides 2. A bed comprising oppositely positioned sides, supporting members inwardly carried by the opposite ends of one of said sides, a rod connected between the said supporting members, a bed bottom hinged upon the said ro'd adapted for. horizontal positioning when in its operative arrangement and further adapted for positioning between the said supporting members when the device is folded, the ends of the bottom being provided with grooves, helical springs surrounding the said rod having their outer ends an- -chored to the adjacent side and their inner ends freely positioned within the said grooves, a retaining latch for the bottom carried by the side thereof opposite the said rod adapted for restraining engagement with the other side of the bed when the device is open, and folding ends hingedly connected between the said supporting members and the oppositely positioned side of the device.
3. A bed comprising oppositely positioned sides, supporting members inwardly carried by the opposite ends of one of said sides, a rod connected between the said supporting members, a bed bottom hinged upon the said rod adapted for horizontal positioning when in its operative arrangement and further adapted for positioning between the said supporting members when the device is folded, the ends of the bottom being provided with grooves, helical springs surrounding the said rod having their outer ends anchored to the adjacent side and their inner ends freely positioned within the said grooves a retaining latch for the bottom carried by the side thereof opposite the said rod adapted for restraining engagement with the other side of the bed when the device is open, end sections hinged together and hingedly connected between the said supporting members and the opposite side of the bed, U-shaped springs secured to the opposite sides slidably engaging the said sections, adapted for folding the said sections between the said sides upon the upward folding positioning of the said bottom, and retaining hooks connected between the opposite ends of the said sides.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
