RIVETING-MACHINE.
Application filed February 1, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
do it known that I, FREDERICK D. Goonmun, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Riveting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to riveting machines. and the object is to provide a machine especially adapted for use in retreading the tires of motor vehicles, but the machine is also adapted for other riveting op erations.
A further object is to provide a riveting machine including a supporting structure and means carried thereby for supporting a tire being operated upon. the tire supporting means being provided with a plurality of rollers radially mounted with reference to the punch effecting the riveting operation.
A still further object is to provide certain novel means for mounting and controlling the punch.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.

A standard is mounted on a base 12, the latter being provided with a socket portion 13 slotted as shown at 14 and accommodating a pivotally mounted lever 15, fulcrumed on the base as shown at 16, the treadle carried by the lever being designated 17.
A laterally extending pin carried by the standard and shown at 18 serves to mount one end of the coiled spring 19, the opposite end of which is connected with lever 15. A bracket 19 near the upper end of the standard carries a pivotally mounted arm 20 which in turn supports a pan 21 for the reception of rivets or washers therefor.
A ring member 22 surrounds the upper end of the standard and is retained in position by means of a set screw 23, this ring member being apertured as shown at 24 and 25 and serving to mount a. plurality of radially extending arms 24 and 25. Each arm carries a plurality of brackets desigbb Dated 26 and spaced apart at suitable dietancee, these brackets being retained by set Specification of Letters Patent.

A frame 30 is carried by the upper portion of the standard 10, the lower arm 31 of this frame carrying the U-shapcd bracket 32 apertured as shown at 33 and guiding a resiliently supported socket member 34, constituting a lower die.
A reciprocating punch designated 35 is mounted in the bore 36 of the upper portion 37 of the frame, this upper portion carrying a slotted member 38 within which one end of arm 39 of lever 40 operates. This lever is connected with the upper end of the punch, and the opposite end of the lever is weighted as shown at 42, and normally retains the punch in elevated position. The punch is slotted at 43 for receiving the end of the lever, and a pin 44 conmeets the lever and the punch. slight play being afforded at this point. The lever engages a roller 41 carried by the punch during its operative movement.
An angle lever 45 is pivoted between cars 46 carried by the frame, one arm of this lever carrying an idler 47 bearing against the under side of lever 40 and serving to elerate the latter for forcing the punch downwarclly and into operative position. The other end of this angle lever is pivotally connected at 48 with a rod 49 which in turn is connected at 50 with lever 15 mounted on the base.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a standard, a base on which said standard is mounted, a pivotally mounted lever supported upon the base, a frame carried by the standard, a punch mounted in the frame, a pivoted lever controlling the punch, an angle lever, an idler carried thereby engaging the lever controlling the punch, a rod connected with said angle lever and with the lever first named and an upstanding member carried by the frame and provided with a bore for the punch and provided with a slot intersecting the bore and guiding the lever controlling the punch.
2. In a device of the class described, a standard, a base on which said standard is mounted, a frame carried by the standard, a punch mounted in the frame, a lever mounted on the base, means connected with the lever and operatingthe punch, an adjuetable device carried by the standard, a
plurality of arms extending radially therefrom, and a roller mounted on each of said arms, and parallel therewith.
3. In a device of the class described, a
