To all 'whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, WALTER L. CONWELL, residin at Montclair, New Jersey, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slidable Metallic Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin which illustrate the preferred form of t e invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious. that various modifications thereof will" our to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings: Figure l is aside elevation pf my .im-
proved door, the weather strip for the upper edge thereof being omitted.
Fig. 2 is a similar view on an enlar ed scale, horizontal andvertical intermediate portions being broken away. V l,
Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through the door, taken on line 3 3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken through the middle and lower panels of the door, as indicated by line 4-'-4, of Fig. 1, the central portion of the door being broken Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of the upper left hand corner of the upperV panel, as viewed` from the reverse side of the door, and shows a portion of the glassretaining means.
Fig. l6 isa similar view, buty with .the glass-retaining means removed.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of one of the corner pieces of theA molding for the 'glass panels.
Fig. 8 is an end elevation thereof.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary side elevation of -erably pressed to present a conventiona line' 1313 of Fig. 12through thefupper and lower panels of the door, the central portion'of which is removed.
My present invention relates to metallic doors, which while readily adaptable to genV eral architectural purposes, are particularly suitable for use in railway cars. An object is to provide a door, which shall be constructed of incomplex parts, relatively few in number and kind. Most of said parts are characterized by their ability to be kept in stock, and merely cut to size to give :the desired dimensions to any given door. o It is further purposed to so correlate the.
side sheets ofthe door/with th'ejdoor edge andj'pan'el outlining frame as to give great y strength and rigidity to the door, and to so y unite these parts as to guard against their 'accidental separation.` y
= it is desirable thatthe door edges sha-1l jeachfbear an. appropriate relation t0 the corresponding portion of the structure forming the door opening, and in `view of the diverse conditions present in the various portions of the latter,.it is purposed that the door edge outlining frame shall be furnished with suitable means-of attachment for harmonizing'complementary edges.-
Simple but effective means .for retainingv'removable glass or other panels are supplied,l and are so formed as vto contribute to the attractive appearance of the door.
Another object isl to include effective reinforcements for stiiening the door and providing means of Aattachment for locks,
door operating apparatus, and sundry ae-A en f Exclusion of air currents or drafts whenv the door isclosed is also made ossible by the construction of the door, an other features not specificallyA mentioned, but appearing hereinafter, fare all a part of the present invention. EL
Referring tothe drawings, `l'indicates theside sheets, of the door, which may be of steel, though any other suitable material is substitutional, and said side sheets are refarance. In Fig. :1, eachside sheet pressing 1 simulates a' pair of stilesl, a top rail 3, a bottom rail 4,1m upper intermediate 'rail 5, a lower intermediate rail 6, and a rails, 3, and 6, respectively, `are panel yopenings adapted to receive lass or other panels 8, hereinafter more fuly referred to. Outlinin the Adoor side sheets 1 and the openings or the glass panels 8, are' d'epressed flanges 9, those portions of said side sheetsl, which connect-flanges 9 with the side sheet portions thatlie in the plane of the stile and rail outer surfaces, forming shoulders. The space between the flanges -9 of the sheets 1, `which latter are spaced A outer borders of side sheets 1 from "a point withinl the stile or top or bottom rail por tions to the outer edge of the flange 9, eX- tending outwardly 'from that point, and
said anges are connected at their inner ends by the web `of the channel. A y The Z-shaped channel ilanges, in addition to conforming to the borders of side sheets 1, contact therewith, and those portions ed incident with flanges 9 are secured thereto, preferably by spot-welding, as indicated by the shaded spot a in Fig.,10. Y A
. The openings `for the removable anels 8 are similarly/einforced by a pane outlining frame, comprisin channels 11 which may be duplicates ofc annels 10, except inl respect to the upper intermediate rail 5.\
The latter being-common to the upper and intermediate panels, and in each side sheet'v 1 being provided with upwardly and downl wardly projecting flanges 9, a simple channel 12 is employed to connect the upwardly extendin flanges of the pair of side sheets,l and anot er channel 12 with reversely directed flanges connects the downwardly projectinganges 9. of said side sheets 1, as
. shown 1n Fig. 2 and 3.
As illustrated, the vertical channels 11 may hecontinuous from the` to of the upper panel to the bottom of the lntermediate panel, and channels 12 associated with ythe upper intermediate rail may extend between and abut thesame. In this manner the vertical channelsll will not be weakened by cutting, though where considered prefer# able, channels 12 may be mitered into vertical channels 11, as are the intersecting honzontal channels 11,
vrespective sides of the openin molding The inwardly depressed portions of the flanges of. all of the channels 11 and the flanges of channels 12 are spot weldedto the -inner flanges 9 of side sheets 1,' as partially indicated at b, in Fig. 10.
To one of the door sheets 1 is secured a -and panel-outlining .frames to bothv side sheets 1,'.the said sheetsv are moved parallel to each other to cause the U-shaped strips 13 to entei-` the sockets referred to and lap strips 14. Thus, the lower part of the door may be strongly reinforced.
,From the' foregoin v1t isi-evident that the door is provided wit apair of spaced but conterminous side sheets, su`plied with 'openings for;V removable pane s, and that said side sheets are preferabl connected together by the interpositin o door edgeand panel-opening edge outlining frames. It is also apparent that the v'welding of the flanges of the outlining' frames to the flanges of the door side, sheets and the reinforcing olf panel-7 produces 'a' substantial basicdoor structure. From the foregoing .and the drawings, vit is' clear that said basic door structure does not constitute a complete door structure, and door-edge-formin members are applied to the channels, 10o said door 'edge-outlining frame to yform com onent parts thereof, to close the-sides of sai channels and to provide the door with suitable door edges. These edge-forming members are hereinafter referredv to as the door hanger, edge-formin strips, guide ystri finger guard and finis ing strip# Channe s 11 and 12 of the anel-openin edge outlining frame are c osed by mo din frames complementing said channels 11v an 12.
Fitted around each opening for a removable panel is a molding frame, by choice i i constructed f of pressings suitabl into an integral unit,' as b wel ing them together. Said molding rame pressings are illustrated as comprising top, bottom and slde strips 15 of less length than the the partly outhne, and corner pieces 16 a apte to connect the justaposed ends of adjacent moldformed ame.
Stri s 15 and corner pieces 16 each have space parallel flanges arranged to lap and contact with those flanges 9 of the side sheets 1 which outline thepanel openingin ving strips thus completing the circuit' of the i the basic door structure into which the mold- Y.
ing frame is introduced. Extending inwardly from their flanges, the'components vof the molding frame are beveled onV one side to a desirable depth, from which point to their opposite flanges they are of angular cross-section.
The beveled'portion of each corner piece. v16 may be provlded with 'appropriate radii, as shown, to improve the lines of the door, but, where this refinementis not cared fior,
the molding strips 15 may run the entire lengths of their respective sides and be mitered, the corner piecesv 16 being in such case' omitted.
That portion of each molding frame -which is ofv angular cross-sectionv forms, o n
the side of said frame opposite that having the bevel, a depression 15* for the reception of the glass or other removable panel 8 and cushioning stri s 17, which latter may well be composed o felt, and be of U-shaped or other cross-section to embrace the edges of the removable panel 8, which it surrounds.
It is advantageous to have this depression 'il vertices of their inner and outer right angles, to facilitate the putting of the mold-A ing frame into place, Fig. 6 disclosing one way of doing thls. f v
To conform to good manufacturing practice, -the strips 15 are pressed in a wellknown and simple manner as units, but the corner pieces 1,6, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, are economically produced in two pieces 16I| and 16",l the former being provided with a lip 16, which laps the inwardly extending fiange of part 16", and is spot welded there. to, as indicated atl c in Fig. .7.
Within this second Ydepression is placed a panel-retaining frame, comprising sub stantially flat retaining strips 18 and corner pieces 19, the vcross sections of which are 'shown to be rectangular and of materially greater width than thickness. It is, however, evident that these members, and also those of the molding frame, may partake of other sectionsl than those shown, and, when the removable panels 8 have a suitable transverse disposition, be given the contour of any classical or other molding.
Corner pieees`19 of the retaining frame I are usually supplied with an are on theiry limer sides, corresponding 'in dimensions to those of the lesser radii of the beveled cor- 'ner pieces -of the molding. frame, and the horizontal or cross yretaining strips 18 are,
Aordinarily welded, as a't e in Fig. 5, to corner pieces 1.9, but the upright retaining strips are not so united. Greater conven ience inapplying and removing the retainin frame is thereby attained through the re uctionvof the numberof separate parts.
The doors illustrated in the drawings beingof the sliding type, a suitable hanger is provided. As shown in the formsof Figs. 1 'and 12,l it may comprise a bar 21 practically 'ce-extensive with the width of the door, and
having approximately its lower half invserted between the upwardly extending, `more narrowly spaced, portions of the Z- shaped flanges of the channel 10 paralleling the upper edge of the door. At the same altitude, and on reverse sides thereof, the "bar 21 is provided with raceways 22, shown as running the length of the bar. The raceways are designed to receive properly supported and retained balls, arranged on opposite sides f hanger bar 21 to furnish an anti- -vfriction support for the door.'
- Angular-shaped edge-forming strips 23,
also substantially co-extensive with 'the width of thedoor parallel the upper edge extend therea ove, and
of to rail 3 an llas -a horizontal flange, the edge of each - which'abuts one side of bar 21. Edge-forming strips 23 are located 0n opposite sides of said hanger bar and preserve the lusual rectangular cross section of the ltop portion of the door,
Countersunk screws 24 pass alternately zontal c annel 10, the inserted part of han er bar 21, the other flange of channel 10, t e flange 9 of the other s1 e sheet llandflao into the ller on 'the opposite side of the door. Hanger bar 21 and the other parts comprising the top edge of the door are thus firmly bound together.
As seen in -Figs. 3 and 9, the upper edge of one side of the door is provided with a suitable weather strip comprisinga 'metallic holding strip 26, secured, as by welding, to y and along the top edge of the door, and a flexible strip 27, of such material as'carpet..V
The bottom edge ofthe door is furnished with a guide-stri 28 zo-extensive with the bottom rail 4. cally arranged flanges which lap thelowermost flanges 9 of both side sheets/1, screws 29'passing through said guide stri flanges, the speciied flanges 9 and the 28 in place. The latter also possesses a downwardly projecting tongue 28EL ada ted to slide in a groove in the usual thres old plate (not shown).
When the door is usedk in a railway car employed in a subway or ytraction service, where hasty entrances and exits by passengers is customary, there is an ever-present danger of impulsive people attempting to leave or enter the car as the door isV closingl Far too frequently thisresults in the hand of the eager person bein Acaught lbetween the edge of the door and its jamb, y
or between the edges of companion doors, where a pair are used. And, if said person is on a platform, .he is in imminentperil of "being forced to run with'the car, with the ultimate possibility of being thrown and sustaining `serious injuries or loss of life.
To avoid such contingencies, the outer vertical edge of the door is supplied throughout its length with a, finger guard 30 of relatively soft and compressible material. 'llhis finger guard may easily be constructed, say, of rub er sheet bent to have a til-shaped cross section, and with the borders of its open side arranged each to lap one of the anges 9 which outline the side sheets 1v along this side of the door.
Clamping strips 31,\each with an inturned flange along its inner edge adapted to abut the shoulder which roduces the line of demarcation between t e outer edge of the ad` jacent stile 2 and its flange 9, are shown as.
aidguide strip, has verti- Y *y -shapedy `flanges of the bottom channel 10 of the door.- edge-outlining frame, securing guide strip Z-shaped fla aarden these parts being iirmly retained in place thereb Wit in, and near the upper and lower extremities of the finger guard 30, the latter is reinforced by resilient means, as blocks of rubber 33. The positions of said rubber blocks are away from any hand or clothescatching locations, and said blocks take up the jar incident to closing the door.
Along the other or inner vertical edge of thev door, a finishing strip is applied, and it `comprises an outwardly exposed channel member 34 and aninternal anged U-shaped channel 35, both -shown `as equal in length Ato the door height, though channel 35 may comprise a plurality of short pieces united vto channel 34.
The outer or exposedchannel member 34, preferably of drawn steel, and the free borders of its vanges are reversely bent inwardly at an acute angle to the remainder ofthe flanges, and the internal U-shaped channel member 35 is a pressing, by choice, and its anges are outturned and adapted to engage the transverse portions of the Z- shapedianges of channel 10, paralleling this edge ot the door. See Fig." 4.
Both channel members 34 and 35 are preferentially y intermittently united by 'spot' welding, as indicated at g in Fig. 11, resulting in the equivalent of a single member.
In applying this linishing strip, .one of its ends is so registered with an end of its associated vertical channel 10 that said strip may be slid into place, whereupon it becomes interlocked with the specified channel 10. rlhe outturned Hanges of internal channel member 35 lap the transverse portions of the 'es of channel I0, the outer edges of said anges and of flanges 9 of the side sheets 1 abut the web of channel member 34, and the deflected portions of the ianges of channel member 34 bear against said ianges 9 of side sheets 1 and the shoulders outlining the outer edge of stile 2 'on this side of the door.
The iit of the finishing strip to the basic door structure is such that relatively-considerable force is necessary to apply it, and the elasticity ofthe metal of which it is composed is sutcient to allow its application to said basic door structure withoutV undue diiliculty, operating, however, to-produce enough friction to securely retain it 1n lace.
pplied to the exterior surface of the web portion of channel member 34 is a weather strip 36, which may be of felt, of a length equal approximately to the door height, and held in place by a clamping plate 37, screws 38 and reinforcement pieces 39 tapped to receive said screws. Weather strip 36 is pliable and its free ends, while normally extensible transversely of the door are adapted.
to conform to vertical stop plates 40, shown in dot and dish lines in rigs. 4 and 13, and
preferably attached to the car framing (not L are not attachable to such substantial partsas, for example, channels 10 or 11, other reinforcing plates 41, tapped, when necessary,
to receive screws or bolts are provided,
The form of door shown in Figs. 12 and 13 vis constructed much like that illustrated in the preceding figures, except that a single glass or removable panel is shown, and both vertical edges of the door are furnished with finishing strips comprising channel members 34 and 35, the finger guard being omitted.
It is apparent that I have-devised a door easy and inexpensive to manufacture, composed principally of parts which may be produced in general lengths and cut to size for any particular door, and which is thor-` oughly durable and attractive in appearance, and poessing the numerous advantages hereinbefore set forth.
It should be clearly understood that the door edgeoutlining frame, and even the panel opening outlining frame, are not necessary to the construction of a door intended for certain uses, but when the door is likely to receive hard and careless usage, the introduction of these frames into such a door is necessary to insure great prolongation of plementary door edge-formingmembers and a panel-receiving member secured, respec tively, to the attachment means of the first and second mentioned frames, said door edgeforming members being constantly maintained inseparable from said door edge frame in a direction transversely thereof, a panel, and retainin means therefor.
