Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed May 5 23, 1917. Serial No. 170,393.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MANLEY RAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Asheville, in the' county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Racks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in racks, and has for its object to provide a device of the character speciiied, especially adapted for printers use, wherein the rack consists of a iixed portion having means for securing the same to a table with the said fixed portion in inclined position, and a movable portion hinged to the fixed portion, said portions having means for holding the movable portion in alinement with the fixed portion or in horizontal position, and a tray connected with the movablek portion and on the top thereof, when the said movable portion is in horizontal position.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved rack,
Fig.`2 is a top plan view of the tray,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the rack folded to bring the tray into position for use, v
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4.--4 vof Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, both views looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent the line.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with the table 1 of a printing press indicated at 2, and the improved rack comprises a fixed portion consisting of a bottom 3, a lower side wall t and end walls 5. Angle brackets 6 are secured to the bottom' of the iiXed portion by screw bolts 7 and to the table 1 in any suitable or desired manner. These angle brackets support the iixed portion of the rack in the inclined position shown and a movable or swinging portion is hinged to the ends 5 of the iixed portion. This movable portion consists of a rear or bottom wall 8 and ends 9 secured to the bottom or rear wall, and these ends 9 are connected to the ends 5 of the fixed portion by hinges 10. As shown, each hinge consists of two leaves, one of which is secured to an end 9 and the other to an end 5, and the ends 5 are beveled at their top in opposite directions as indicated at 11 and 12 respectively for engagement by the beveled ends 13 of the ends 9, to hold the bottom or rear wall S ot' the movable portion in the position of Fig. 1, or in the position of Figs. 3 and el., that is, in inclined position, and in the plane of thebottom 3, or in horizontal position at an angle to the bottom 3, and overhanging the said iixed portion.
A tray is supported by the bottom 8 of the movable portion, the said tray consisting of a fixed portion secured to the bottom S, and a removable portion detachably connected with the said bottom and with the fixed portion. The fixed portion consists of a front wall 14 having at its ends extensions 15, and the lower edges of the said front wall laland extensions l5 are flanged as indicated at 1G in dotted lines in Fig. Q. and said flanges are secured to the bottom 8 of the movable portion. The removable portion of the tray consists of a bottom 17, a rear wall 18 and end walls 19, and the bottom is of a width to extend from the rear of the tray to the wall 14 of the fixed portion. A portion of the flange 16 of the wall 141 at the center of the said wall is separated and oiisetfupwardly to form a tongue 2O which engages over the edge of the bottom 17 when the removable portion is in place, as shown more particularly in Fig. 4. The rear wall of the removable portion of the tray is a bar of wood or the like as shown at 21, and the end walls 19 are connected with the ends of the bar and have extensions 22 engaging the rear or outer face of the bar. A tongue 23 is struck up from the rear edge of the bottom 17 and this tongue is secured to the inner face of the bar, the said tongue being at the center of the bar. The inner upper corner of the bar is beveled as indicated at 24' and a latch is provided at the rear of the bottom 8 for connecting the removable portion of the tray to the said bottom to hold it in place. This latch mechanism consists of a catch 25 on the bottom 8, and a latch lever 26 pivoted to a plate 27 secured to the bar, the latch being normally pressed into engagement with the catch by a coil spring 28. The latch lever has a finger-piece as shown for convenience in releasing the same, and when the said lever is engaged with the catch the removable portion of the tray is held firmly in place on the bottom 8 of the movable portion of the rack.
It will be noticed from an inspection of of a `front section Figs. 1 and 3, that the end walls 15 of the fixed portion of the tray are beveled, and that these walls'ffit snugly outside: thewaills 19. In use, the device may be arranged as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, or as shown in Fig. 1, or the removable portion of the tray may be removed;
When in the position ofFig. 1, the top of the rack is open and boxes of consider- .able length vmaiT be supported by the rackas ,shown in Fig. 1. Vhen the parts are inthe position of Figs. 3 and 1 papers may be placed in the fixed portion of the rack and in the tray and if the saidy papers are of too `great size for the tray the removablepor- `bcttomafnd end walls secured to the underface of the bottom-y and hinged to the end Walls of the fixed-portion and beveled at their ,hinged ends to engage either beveled face of the en'd Wall to support the movable portion in alinement With the fixed 'portion or in horizontal position7 said movable. portion supporting atray, said tray consisting fixed to the bottom of the movable portion and a rear section. detach- ,ably connected with the said bottom .and
forming with the fixed section a complete tray, `the removable section having a latch i'or connectingv the: samewvith the box.
2. A device of the character specified oo m prising a fixed portion having means for v connecting the same to a table to hold the said :fixed portion in inclined position with respectl to the table, said iixed portion comprising a bottom Wall, end Walls and a lower side wall. the end walls being extended above the bottom Wall and beveled at' both corners, a movable portion consisting of va bottom and end Walls secured to the underface of' thefbottomand hinged to the end Walls of' the `xed portion and'bevele'd at their hinged ends to engage either beveled face of' the end Wall to support the movable portion-in alinement with the fixed portion or in horizontal position.
3. A device'of the character speciiied comprising a fixed portionhaving means for connecting the same to a table to hold the said fixed portion in an inclined position with respect'to the table, said fixed portion comprising ai bottom Wall, end Walls and a lower side Wall, the end Walls being extended` above-the bottom Wall 'and beveled at both corners, a movable portion consisting of .a bottom and Kend Walls secured tothe nnderface of the bottom .andl hinged4 to the end Walls of the fixed portionand'beveled at their hinged ends tdengage either beveled face ofthe end Wall to support. the movable portion in alinementV With the; fixedv portion or in horizontal position, said movablelpor- .tion supporting a tray.` n L l.
