CUSPIDOR-LIFTER.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR WIGKER- sHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hereford, in the county of Meade and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cuspidor-Lifters, of which lthe following is a specification.
This invention is an improved device for lifting and carrying cuspidors and the like, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction, is strong and durable, is adapted to be easily operated to engage and release a cuspidor and by means of which a cuspidor can be rigidly maintained in an upright position whlle it is being carried and may be also readily tilted and dumped and the cleaning thereof greatly facilitated.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a cuspidor lifter and carrier constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same at right-angles to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
My improved cuspidor lifter and carrier comprises a pair of members 1, 2, each of which constitutes a bar of metal, of suitable dimensions, the said members being crossed and pivotally connected together as at 3. The member 1 has an inwardly curved lower end 4 and is provided at its upper end with an arm 5 which is arranged at an angle thereto and to the upper end of which is attached a handle 6, the handle being formed by bending a strip of suitable metal in substantially elliptical form and by bending the ends of' said strip to form lugs 7 which are secured on opposite sides of the upper end of the arm 5 by rivets 8, the handle being arranged at right-angles to the arm. A segmental jaw 9 which is arranged at right-angles to the general plane of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ar. 19, 1918.
Application mea August 17, 1917. serial No. 186,755.
The member 2 is identical in construction with the member 1 excepting that its lower portion is bent laterally at a slight angle as at 12. The handle 13 of the member 2 is identical in construction with the handle 6 and is secured on the upper end ofthe arm 14. On one side of the member 2 isa bar 15 which is secured thereto and is formed with an oifset- 16 through which the member 1 extends. Said bar has an outwardly bent lower portion 17 which diverges from the corresponding portion 12 of the member2 and said portions 12, 15, respectively, terminate in inwardly extending curved portions 18, 19, which are connected together by a segmental jaw 20, said jaw belng riveted to outwardly turned lugs 21, 22 with which said curved portions 18, 19 are respectively formed. The jaw 20 is pro- .vided with a facing 23 of rubber 01 other suitable material and is arranged to engage the cuspidor on the side opposite the jaw 9.
It'will be understood that the handles of the implement can be readily grasped and manipulated to cause the jaws of the implement to be gripped on opposite sides of a cuspidor so that the cuspidor can be readily lifted, carried and emptied without having to handle the same and the cleaning of the cuspidor can be also greatly facilitated. The jaws can also be readily disengaged from the cuspidor to release the latter, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, l claim An implement of the class described comprising a pair of members arranged in crossed relation, pivotally connected together and provided with handles at their upper ends, the lower ends of said members being curved inwardly, a segmental jaw secured to the curved lower end o f one of the members and arranged to engage one side of a cuspidor, a bar on one side of the other member, corresponding in shape therewith, provided with an offset portion through 5 which the first-named member extends, said second-named member and said bar having downwardly diverging lower ends, and a segmental jaw secured to and connecting sald downwardly diverging ends and ada ted to engage a cuspidor on the side opposite 10 the first-named j aw.
y Y In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
ARTHUR WICKERSHAM.
