' CUT-OUT" VALVE roa GAGE-COCKS. Y i
To all urlrbm it mogjconce V J p g; Beat known that I; Manila El MA -ar, a
citizen of the i nited Gage-C ch55. of
which the following is a specification,
This invention relatesto improvements in g The object of th invention'is to provide. a valve of this character so constructed and applied that the gage cock used in connec tion therewith maybe removed for cleaning, repairing or ofherpurposes, while the full steam is on intheboiler. v V
With the foregoing-Hand other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides mum com'bi nation and arrangement of, parts'and in the details of construction hereinafterdescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein, disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I In the accompanying drawings Fi ure 1 re resents a lon itudinal section through a valve constructed in accordance with this invention shown applied to aboiler; plate, said plate being broken ofi for convenience and illustration,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and F 1g. 3 1s an end view of the valve taken from the inner end. V
In the embodiment illustrated, a boiler plate BP is shown provided with a threaded opening 0 in which the outer member 1 of the improved valve constituting this invention has threaded engagement.
This valve member 1 is shown in the form of a substantially cylindrical casing, open. at
its outer end and closed at its inner end, 7
said closed inner end having an arcuate slot 2 formed therein adjacent its periphery and concentric therewith for a purpose tobe de Specification of Letters EatentQ S ates, ;res'idin at Clinton and state o m tat d Mar. 5; i918."

scribed; This casingil lhasan angular 'peripheral portion 3 f for; engagement by wrench-to facilitate its application andi'e moval from the threaded opening 1 11 the] boiler plate. On one side of this angular race 3;- the casing s, 'exter-iorlyithreaded as shown ate toengagethegthreaded open ing 0. in the boiler plate and inn-a dvancegof said portion "is reduced threaded as shown at'fl5 'torecei e a nut'ocar properfzp v This valve or core Thas'a bore 8 shaming longitudinally therethrough, being sho n arranged atv an oblique angle meshes isdesigned to register when the parts are applied with the slot Q'in theinner end, or casing 1. when said valve is, turned in one di--;

An annular shoulder 91s formed onthe'core 7' V at. a point be'yond the outer endof casingl With which the nut ofhas a sw vels d connec- Q ti'on, said nut having anaiinular recess atits inner end adapted'to'rotatably engage said shoulder 9, the nutbeing 'threaded beyond. v

outer end of easing l; sothat when said nut" is screwed inwardly the'core T will'be' forced 7 into binding engagement With the casing and held flgtLlBSlLtLlIIllllg.
A projection 110 extends longitudinally from the inner'endof core 7 'throughthe arcuate slotor opening' i in the inner end of the casing l and is preferably made in the form of aplug having threaded engage- ,ment with said core to provide for itsre- V moval should this become necessary for any purpose. This plug 10 is designed to move in the arcuate'slot 2. 011 the turning of the valve member 7 to insure theproper cleaning of said opening and preventtheaccumulation of sed ment therein, such aswould,
tend to render the device inoperative:
From the. above description it will be obvious that when the valve 7 is turned into the position shown in Fig. 1 with the bore 8 thereof registering with the opening 2 in the casing 1, that the steamintheboiler:
' ed on the outer end of saidvalve 7.
will be permitted to pass freely through said bore into the gage cock which is mount- When it is desired for any reason to remove the gage cook, the nut 6 isloosened on casing 1 sufficiently to permit the valve 7 to turn in said casing and the valve is so turned as to cut oil communication between the boreB therein and the opening '2 in the casing thereby shutting off the steam from the'gage "cock and permittingit to be detached and a new one substituted and the old one re-' paired or cleaned, and this may be done while theboiler is under full steam pressure.
It will be clearly seen that the plug 10 .will operate by theturning of valve 7 to -remove any accumulation of sediment in the arcu'ate opening and should the bore 8 in said valve become clogged it may be copies of thlspetent may be obtained for readily cleaned out by turning the valve to cut oil communication with. the interior of the boiler and then inserting a cleanout rod 7 or other instrument within said bore. 7
This cut-ofi' valve while simple in con 7 struction and cheap to manufacture, may be quickly and readily applied to a boiler and the, gage cock connected therewith, and
' when so connected will overcome all of the objectionable features heretofore pointed out. r
From the foregoing (lQSCllPtlOll, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantagesof the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the inventionappertain's and while I have described 7 the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to. be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are Within 1" l the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim:
cylindrical casing open at oneendand closed its closed end adjacent its-periphery,. an
elongated core-like valve mounted to-t-nrn' 111 said casing and projecting beyond one In a valve ofthe class describedpan outer it at the other with an arcuateslot formed vin I end thereof h a Ore extending longlture ister with the slot in the casin when b a din'al'ly therethrough at: an oblique ai1gl' e,'
one end of said bore being ipositioned to I operable to prevent the accumulation of sediment within the slot and to limit the g'agernent with said casing whereby the valve may be locked in adjusted position by the screwing of'said nut on said casing and I released on the unscrew ng thereof.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature inpresence of two witnesses. 'MALRYIN E. MA'LM."
