HAND-OPERATED APPARATUS FOR ROTATING DRILLS OR OTHER ROTARY TOOLS OR IMPLEMENTS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN RIsK, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Heaton, Newcastleup0n-Tyne, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Operated Apparatus for Rotating Drills or other Rotary Tools or Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand-operated drill mechanism.
Apparatus made in accordance with this invention comprises two members pivoted together and adapted to be held in one hand and to be moved angularly in respect of one another, a rotary spindle disposed on one member, and means for rotating the spindle when the pivoted members are moved toward one another.
I will fully describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of one construction of apparatus embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view looking on the righthand side of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a part similar view to Fig. 1 showing another position of the operating rack.
Referring to the drawings, the embodiment of my invention therein illustrated comprises two members a and b pivoted together at a, one member a being an arm carrying a sector cl and the other member, 72, a hollow rod, the axis of the pivot 0 being the center from whichthe sector (Z is struck. The hollow rod 7) is provided with a thumb-piece e and is adapted to receive a spindle f which projects from each end thereof. The spindle f is free to rotate in the hollow rod 6 and is provided with a flywheel g mounted within a frame r carried by the hollow rod 6. On the spindle f is fixed a pinion h which is engaged by a curved rack j carried by a plate j attached to the sector at, any lateral movement of said pinion except in a direction parallel to the rack j being prevented by a pin 8 projecting rearwardly from the foot of the rod 6 engaging a curved slot is in the sector (Z. The spindle f is provided with a chuck m at its outer end adapted to receive and hold a drill or other rotary tool or implement. The sector d is provided with a slot or finger piece a at one end. The end of the hollow rod 6 opposite to that from which the spindle projects is provided with a head of cap 79.

piece 6 on the hollow rod 6 while one or more of the fingers are passed through or placed in the slot or finger piece it of the sector. By alternately closing and opening the hand the arm a carrying the sector at and rack 7' is caused to swing to and fro about the pivot c, the rack co-acting with the pinion h during the closing of the hand, that is the power stroke, to rotate the spindle f and the drill or the like carried thereby. During oscillation of the sector d and rack 7', when the abutment 1.0 on the plate it comes into contact with the shoulder y on one side of the hollow arm 5, the plate a is moved to the left and the co-action of its oblique grooves 7) with the pins t of the rack plate y" causes said rack plate to move radially outward, as shown in Fig. 3, to disengage the rack j with the pinion it. The momentum of the flywheel g continues to rotate the spindle f while the operators hand is opening. 011 the return stroke, when the shoulder 3 on the other side of the hollow arm Z) comes into contact with the abutment e on the plate a this plate is moved over to the right and the co-action of its oblique grooves r with the pins t of the rack plate y" causes said rack plate to move radially inward again and rengage the rack with the pinion it ready for the next working stroke. In this way the direction of rotation of the spindle 7 is not reversed, the flywheel having sufficient momentum to keep the spindle rotating when the pinion is disengaged from the rack. It

What'I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A drill comprising two members pivoted together and. adapted to be held in one hand and to be moved angularly in respect of one another, a rotary spindle disposed on one member, and having a toothed pinion, flywheel and tool holder on said spindle, a segmental rack disposed on the other member adapted to engage the said pinion, means for bringing the pinion and rack into engagement with one another prior to making the power stroke, and means for bringing the pinion and rack out of ena 'einent after the ower stroke all constructed and operating as herein set forth.
