ADJUSTABLE BRACKET.
APPLICATION mm maze. 1917.

INVENTOR Uscom C .IQoshaua WITNESSES ATTORNEY OSCAR C. KROSHAUG, 0F VOLGA, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ADJUSTABLE BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed April 26, 1917. Serial No. 164,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR C. KROSHAUG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Volga, in the county of Brookings and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in supporting brackets adapted to be attached to ladders, scaffolds and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, strong and eiiicient bracket for supporting shelves on ladders nd one which is especially useful for painters. window washers, and others.
Another object of the invention is to construct a bracket of this character equipped with means for supporting both a tray and a bucket.
With the foregoing and. other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a building with a ladder leaning thereagainst and equipped with this invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention with parts broken out and a bucket shown suspended therefrom in dotted lines,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a bracket detached, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment illustrated, a ladder L is shown which is of ordinary construction having the usual side bars SB and connecting rungs R. The bracket, constituting this invention, for use in connection with this ladder is composed of a pair of clamping jaws l and 2 formed at the opposite ends of a spring metal strip which is folded midway its ends as shown at 3 to provide resilient arms 4 and 5, the resiliency of the metal causing them to normally spring away from each other. The arms are held against the tension of said spring by bolts 6 and 7, arranged one near the jaws at the free end of the strip and the other near the folded portion thereof, said bolts being provided with wing nuts 8 and 9 for regulating the tension of the spring arms.
These connected arms 4 and 5 form a shank 20 for the ladder engaging member and said shank has a slight lateral twist therein, as is shown clearly in Fig. 3 to provide for the proper positioning on the ladder which is arranged at an incline. The clamping jaws 1 and 2 are constructed to conform in shape to the side bar of the ladder to which the bracket is to be attached, being here shown forming a substantially rectangular frame when drawn together, a space being left between the terminals thereof to adapt the jaws to slide freely on the side bar of the ladder without contacting with the rungs.
A circular band 10, constructed of spring metal is here shown connected with the folded end 3 of the jaw shank which is c0mposed of the two arms 4 and 5. This band 10 is split and has laterally projecting parallel arms 11 and 12, which are apertured at their free ends, and through which the bolt 7 passes and connects the band with the laddcr engaging member. The arm 11 is also riveted as shown at 13 to the folded end 3 of the shank of the ladder engaging member, the arm 12 being comparatively free and adapted to spring away from the shank of the ladder engaging member with which it is connected, so that when the wing nut 9 is tightened up, the band 10 will exert a clamping action on the object with which it is engaged and which is usually a bucket inserted therein, but which may be a depending annular flange 14 carried by the lower face of a tray 15 as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.
This tray 15 is preferably provided with an upstanding circumferential flange 16 designed to retain small articles thereon and the depending flange 14 thereof, together with the tray may be composed of any suitable material, the flange fitting in the band 10 when the device is in use.
A bucket supporting hook 17 has an eye 18 at one end which is designed to be engaged with bolt 7 between the inner face of arm 12 of band 10 and the outer face of arm 5 of the ladder engaging member as is shown clearly in Fig. 3 and which is held in operative position by tightening up of the wing nut 9. This hook 17 is designed to support a bucket, which is shown in dotted lines at 19, or any other article capable of being carried thereby.
In the use of this improved attachment, the wing nut 8 is loosened suflicient to permit the jaws 1 and 2 to clam ingly engage one of the side bars of the adder L and after being properly adjusted and positioned thereon, said nut 8 is tightened up and the bracket thus rigidly secured to the ladder. If desired, the tray 15 may be used in connection with this bracket and held in position in the manner above described or it may be removed and a bucket fitted within the band 10 and clampingly engaged by tightening up of the wing nut 9.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readil apparent to those skilled in the art to whic the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim In a device of the class described, the combination of a ladder engaging member comprising a pair of clamping jaws having a shank extending therefrom, a split clamping band having arms extending from the ends thereof and engaged with said shank, and a tray having an annular flange on its lower face adapted to fit within said band and be secured thereto.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
