WHEEL FOR TOY VEHICLES.
incense.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST D. WHIDDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheels for Toy Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in vehicle wheels and has particular reference to a wheel for toy vehicles.
An object of the invention is to provide a light, inexpensive and easily manufactured wheel formed of sheet metal blanksstamped and secured together so as to provide hub and rim portions, said blanks, when assembled, producing a wheel of great strength and rigidity.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fi ure 1 is a side elevation of a wheel constructed in accordance with the invcntion.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the sections of the wheel.
Fig. at is a similar view of the other section.
The wheel embodied in the present inveni tion is preferably formed of sheet metal and consists of sections 5 and 6, the former having its center stamped to provide an inturned hub portion 7. The central portion of the section 5 is bowed outwardly or dished as indicated at 8 while the marginal portion 9 is flattened and said portions are provided at intervals with reinforcing ribs 10 between which are disposed openings 11 for a purpose which will presently appear. The periphery of the section 5 is rolled or curved to provide a rim portion 12 in which Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
Specification of Letters Patent.
is mounted a wire ring 13 for reinforcing said rim portion.
The section 6 of the wheel is also provided centrally thereof with an inturned hub 14 and the central portion of the section is likewise bowed outwardly as indicated at 15 so that the hubs 7 and 14 are spaced a considerable distance apart and thus form a screw bearing for an axle passing therethrough. The periphery of the section 6 is provided at intervals with a plurality of lugs 16 corresponding in number to the openings 11 in the section 5, said lugs being insertible through said openings and then bent over upon the section 5 whereby to securely fasten the section 6 thereto.
What is claimed is 1. A wheel of the class described comprising a pair of sections one of which is provided with a plurality of openings, said section having its periphery rolled to provide a rim portion, a reinforcing element mounted in said rim portion, the other section of the wheel having lugs engageable in the openings in the first named section and bent to engage said section whereby to secure the parts together. a
2. A wheel of the class described com prising sections formed of sheet metal, the central portions of which are bowed outwardly with respect to each other and provided with inwardly extending hub portions, one of said sections having a plurality of openings therein and also having its periphery curved to provide a rim portion, the other section of the wheel having lugs engageable in the openings in the first named section whereby to secure said sections together, and a reinforcing wire mounted in said rim portion.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
