Description

J. A NOLAN. TlLTlNG PLATFORM FOR MINE CAR DUMPS.
APPLlCATION FILED SEPT- 30, 1916- MT MWM. W E J W HM Patented Jan. 22,1918.
fly g -c tilt wer i win itnplteetton tile provide means foropereting the ear control Elli it'll moving: our thereon me till Armnged upon the mechanism by the tilting platform or According to my invention the tilting" plotter-in may, when approaching s liori zontal position cause the cor-control lHQCllitnism to feed a. car automatically toward the platform, but when the platform is tilting" to dump the eerecontrol mechanism will as stone such position that the liability of e cor feeding into the space behind the tilting platform will be avoided Besides the above my invention is distingarnished in the use of 2. lost motion device be tween the platform end the control mechanism so that the kinetic energy of the 'y be relied on to operate the our control niecliionisni.
in the drawings Figure l is o plan view of v portion. truck and dump to Wl11Cl1 my in vention n t-- plied 2, is o. side elevation oi he ennui Fig, 3, is on end elevotion partly insec-- tion and partly in elevation,
Figsi ll and 5 are diegromnietie views ,oil' the ear in two positions The nun'icrels end mile of a track between which are orrei'iged suitable bearings supporti .5 e roclt shaft 3.

supported by suitable bearings 26 and 2?, the latter being carried by e timber 28 which in turn forms it stop for the platform.
.fllie rock shaft 25 has one end bent at an angle so as to continuously engage a slot 29 in an arcuate bracket 30, secured to, but depending from the under surfaces of the platform" To complete my invention l have shown mounted upon the rails 31 and 32 of the platform curved obutments 33 adapted to engage the wlieels'ot the car and arrest rectilinear movement thereof." llo con1pensote for the SllOClKJI provide coil springs 34 lid dill
tl et encircle rods, 35 each of WlllCh has 6L pivotel connection with one oi. the abutments as illustrated at 36.. Each rod '35 is slidably inoiunted in :i bearing 3'? supported by the re! Any suitable mechanism may be provided for moving; the abutinents out of engagenent With the Wheels of the car for allowing the some to pass onto the continuation 38 of the main track but for'the purpose oi? illustration l have illustrated e. toggle lever ineehanisrn' 39 operated in any suitable manner:
To essure the return of the car and plot- Ltorm to its normal position after the dumpinp; operation the platform is pivotally connected ed center to a supporting structure 4:0 clearly shown in the diagrammatic view in Figs 4 and 5 While a Weight ii is attached to the platform adjacent one end thereof, ln the operetion'dt the apparatus o car is released upon the rails 1 and 2 by operation. of the control mechanism. The car immediately picks up speed andthe momentum thereof is great enough to cause the plotforno to turn about its pivot "when "the Wheels strike the ebutmentstlis, that is to say the rectilinear motion oil the car is converted into circular motion by the engagement between the abutments 33 and the front Wheels of tlieucer. Just before this circular motion of the platform and the cor is completed slot 39 engages and operates the rock sliolt which through the medium of the urine end 2 'tllfil the cranks 23 and 24 give it purtiol r on. to the shaft 3 for moving f 1 one Z and 8 away from the mile int end Iltt towerd one end Wall of the tilt) rails so as to aliow the next car to take up its proper position.
After the coal has been dumped, the ottcenter manner of supporting the platform acting conjointly-with the Weight 41 causes the platform and car to move toward a horizontal position. When the, position of the platform'and car toward a horizontal position has reached a pro-determined angie, engagement is brought about between the remaining end wall of the slot and the rock shaft 25 thereby allowing the kinetic energy of the returning dump to operate the control mechanism for allowing another car to pass upon the platform.
At this point I wish to call attention to the fact that the rails 1 and 2 are inclined so that when the front stops 9 and 10 are operated a loaded car will obtain enough momentum to pass upon the dump and dis place the empty car.
It is to he understood that While all of the several features of my improved machine have special cooperations with one another and together constitute pet tion-- lai'ly effective mechanism for 1,116 purpose in view either of these features may be applied in other relations and I therefore do sire to cover the combination present in the several parts of my impi'oved invention ease-em whether employed in the general organization shown or elsewhere What I claim is':-
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating shaft, of a. car-control mechanism and a tilting platform, of rock shaft heiow the operating shaft and provided with a crank arm at one end, link connections between the operating shaft and the rock shaftand an arm depending from the platfoim and provided with an arcuate slot engaged by the crank arm of the rock shaft.
2. In a device of the class described, a car-control mechanism comprising a pair of oppositely operating Cm: stops, on operating shaft connected to said car stops, an arm on said shaft having oppositely projecting ends, a rock shaft below the operating shaft and having an arm fixed thereto with oppositely projecting ends, links connecting pairs of oppositely ccmnccting ends on said shafts, a right angular projection on the free end of the rock shaft and a deeuding arm on the tilting platform, said arm having an arcuate slot engaging the free end of said rock shaft.
in testimony whereof I ei'rix my signature.
