INVENTOR wh'NEssEs I f v ATTORNEY- JOHN W. VANNA'ITA, OF HONOLULU, TERRITORY OF HAWAII.
NOTE-BOOK HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. d, 191?.
Application filed July 11, 1917. Serial No. 179,926.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. VANNATTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, have invented new and useful Improvements in Note-Book Holders, of whiohthe following is a specification.
This invention is an improved holder for use in connection with a stenographic notebook or the like to hold the note-book when arranged in inverted V-shape, as when reading or= transcribing therefrom, the object of the invention being to provide an improved holder of this kind which may be readily attached to the covers of a note-book or the like and which may be readily adjusted as required.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a stenographic note-book provided with a holder constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, and showing the note-book in inverted V-shaped position as when being used for reading or transcribing therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the note-book closed.
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of one of the guide members.
The book 1, which may be a note-book I or the like, is provided with stiff covers 2,
3. In accordance with my invention I provide a holding member 4 which is here shown as a tape and which has one end passed through an opening 5 in the cover 2 and pasted or otherwise secured to the inner side of the cover as at 6. The holding member also passes through and is slidably in slits 7, 8 with which the cover 3 is provided and which are arranged at suitable distances from the end of said cover 3 as shown and preferably at points midway between the side edges of the cover.
In opposite sides of the slit 7 are reinforcing and guide members 9 which are made of suitable sheet metal and which are bent and caused to bear on the outer and inner sides of the cover 3. The slit 8 has its opposite sides lined by a pair of guide and reinforcing members 10, 11. The member 10 is identical in construction with the members 9 and is formed from a circular blank. The member 11 has an inner portion 12 which bears against the inner side of the cover 3 and has a square portion 4 which bears against the outer side of the cover and extends to the end thereof, and said portion 14 is provided with an outwardly-turned flange 15. When the holder is'in use, as shown in Fig. 4, the flange 15 bears on the holding member 4 and securely grips the same by imposing a portion of the weight of the book thereon. The friction between the holding and guiding and reinforcing members and the pressure of the flange 15 on the holding member 4 enable the holding member to keep the note-book in any desired adjusted position.
A tab 17 of leather or the like is attached to the outer end of the holding member. When the book is closed the holding mem ber is arranged on the outer side of the book and is out of the way.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spiritof my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with the covers of a book one of said covers having spaced slits, a holding member attached to the other member of the cover and extending through and slidable in the slits of the first-named cover member, and a guiding member attached to the first-named cover member and provided with an outwardly turned flange to bear on the holding member when the same is in use.
2. In combination with the covers of a book, a holding member attached to one of the covers, the other cover being provided with spaced slits, the free end of the holding member extending through and being slida-ble in the slits, the last-named cover having guiding and reinforcing members in opposite sides of the slits and between which the holding member passes, one of said guiding and reinforcing members having an extension on the outer side of said lastnemed cover, extending to the end thereof and provided with an outwardly-turned l0 flange to bear on the holding member when the same is in use.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN WV. VANNATTA.
