Description

CARL G. KORTE, OF GARLSTADT, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT INv GARDENPUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,593, dated March 12, 1872.
ing drawing forming part of this specication,
in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a perspective 4view of my pump. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ot' the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement on a pump-barrel of a shoulder-brace, which forms the bearing for the fulcrum-pin of the pump-lever, and also serves to conline the throw of the pump-lever within the proper limits. From the lower head of the pumpbarrel projects a pointed foot, which forms the chamber for the foot-valve, in suoli a manner that, by placing the pump-barrel into a pail and bringing the arm-pit to bear upon the shoulder-brace,the pump can be operated with great ease and convenience; With the pump is combined a iexible tube, which is connectedto the pump by means of a tapering nipple and sleeve and the same means are employed for the purpose of securing the mouth-piece in the end of said tube.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the barrel of my pump, the lower head of which is provided With a chamber, a, containing the foot-valve b, said chamber being formed with a sharp-pointed foot, c, so that the barrel, when placed into a pail or tub, will be prevented from slipping. Through the flanges at both ends of the barrel and through the heads extend rods dd', Which unite at the top and form a shoulder-brace, B, at a convenient height to reach under the arm-pit of the person intending to operate the pump, as shown in Fig. 1. The rod d forms the bearing for the fulcrumpin e ofthe lever O, which connects, by a pivot, f, with the piston-rod D, and which extends through a recess, g, in the rod d, so that the ends of said recess form stops which confine the motion of the pump-lever within certain limits and prevent the piston from coming in contact with either of the ends or heads of the" pumpbarrel. From the valve-chamber a eX- tends a pipe, E, which connects, by a nipple, h, with4 a flexible pipe, F. The nipple h forms a chamber for the valve t', and it is provided at its outer end with an internal screw-thread to receive a conical pipe, j, the diameter of which increases toward its outer end. This pipe is forced into the end ofthe iiexible pipe F, and a conical sleeve, k, is forced over it, so as to compress the end ofthe pipe F between it and the conical pipe j, and to form a tight joint between said iiexible pipe and the nipple h. In the outer end ofthe iiexible pipe F is secured a mouth-piece, Z, the diameter of which increases toward its inner end, so that, when the same is forced into the flexible pipe, it can be locked by a conical cap or sleeve, nl, as shown in Fig. 2.
The great advantage of this pump is that it can be conveniently carried and placed into a pail in any place Where it is desirable to use'thc pump, all by V one person, Without requirin g any aid or preparation. In case of tire it serves to bring the Water to bear ou the place where it is required, since one person can easily carry a water-pail and one of my pumps as close to the iire as the temperature will permit. My pump may, however, also be used for sprinkling in gardens or lields, and for any purpose Where pumps are generally used.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
1. The arrangement of a shoulder-brace, B, and pointed foot c on the barrel A of a pump, said brace forming the bearing for the fulcrumpin e of the lever O, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved pump, consisting of a shoulder-brace, B, recess g, lever G, piston-rod I), barrel A having a foot, c, valve b, valve-chamber a, discharge-pipe E, valve 1', and pipe F, and its connections, substantially as set forth, for the purpose specified.
This specification signed by me this 28th day of December, 1871.
