To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M.BR1NCK ERHOFF, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Englewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates broadly and generally to new and useful improvements in railway cars, and more particularly of that character or type usually employed Jfor passenger service, and embodying a floor structure, a roof structure. side posts between the floor structure and the roof structure, and sheathing forming the side walls of the car. One of the objects ofmy present invention is to provide for the rigid and substantial bracing of the side posts and side-Wall structure of the car, and more specifically to pro# vide a bracing means for the side posts, which means will embody a member having the combined functions of a belt rail, a window sill and the window sill moldin Specifically the invention is capable of various embodiments, but I prefer to provide a bracing member extending longitudinally of the side wall at the window sill level, which member is preferably channel-shaped and arranged with its web to constitute the window sill or sills of the car while its opposite anges, respectively constitute a belt rail, and the window sill molding. In another embodiment, said member may be formed integral with 'the upper edge portion of the side wall sheathing extending between the lower side sills and the lower portions of the window openings.
The invention consists 'in the improved construction to be more fully described hereinater, and the novelty Vof which vwill 'be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed. A
I have fully and clearly illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of a car structure containing my ini -vention, such parts as are not pertinent to the invention being omitted in order to make a clear showing.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference: 1 designatesa side sill constituting one of the elements of a car floor structure, and located at the lower edge of the side wall structure, said member, as shown for the purpose of this application, being preferably in the form of an ,angle iron arranged with one of its flanges 1a vertical, and the other flange lb extending horizontally and inward toward the longi tudinal center line of the car. As both side walls of the car will be of the same form, a. description of one will be suiicient. Rising from the fioor structure and secured at their lower ends to the said side sill are vertical, spaced side posts 2, each consisting of axentral web 3 arranged in the vertical plane of the side wall of the car and provided with integral side flanges 4, extending inward of the car body, and having internal inturned lianges v5 at the back or inner portion of the post. The upper ends of the side posts are connected in any suitable manner to a longitudinal member 6 at the base of the roof structure, and from which rise the carlines 7. At the upper end portions the side posts carry a letter 'board 8 constituting the upper portion of the side wall of the car above the windows, said letter board being secured at its upper edge to the member 6, and at its lower edge to a longitudinall extending angle iron 8a secured to the si e posts and defining the upper horizontal edges of the window openings. Said board member 8 is also connected to the side posts, between the members 6 and 8, by rivets, spot-welding, or any other suitable means.
I will now describe a preferred embodiment of the bracing means for the side posts, constituting one of the important features of my invention.
Extending longitudinallyof the car at a e point intermediate the side sill 1 o f the floor structure and the roof structure, is a longitudinally extending member 9, which is rigidly connected to all of the side posts and serves to brace and stilfen the same. This member is preferably located at the window sill level, and is preferably constructed to constitute a belt rail, window sill or sills, and window sill molding. For the purpose stated the member 9 preferably consists of a metal channel-shaped member having a central web 10 and outer and inner side flanges 11 and 12, said member being so arranged that the web portion constitutes the window sills, while the flanges 11 and 12, respectively, constitute an external belt rail and an internal window sill molding. The general formation of the channel member is immaterial and may take a number of forms, but of that form generally shown in cross-section in Fig. 6, and in perspective in Fig. 7 in which a portion of the web 10 is arranged in a horizontal plane as at 13 between the vertical side faces of the side posts, and the outer portion of said web is inclined outward andv downward as at 14 to form an inclined surface for drainage. The ange 11 depends from the outer edge of the inclined portion 14, while the flange 12 depends from the inner edge of the portion 13. Any suit' able means may be provided for securing the member 9 to the side posts, but I prefer to do this by stamping out apertures 15 from the web 10 at intervals corresponding to the distance between adjacent side-posts, said apertures being each adapted to receive a side post, and being formed to conform to the general contour of the side posts and snugly fit the same. In forming the apertures to receive the side posts, I preferably strike up theV metal removed from the opening in the piercing operation to provide an integral, vertical flange" 16 surrounding the opposite side portion of each post, and extending across the outer surface of the web of the post. rIhese flanges ladord convenient and efficient means for the attachment of the I prefer to make itane-ansi member 9 to each of the side posts by means of rivets or welding. I do not, however, limit myself to any specific means for securing the member 9 to the side posts. It will be seen from an examination of Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 that the inner, vertical flange 12 constituting the Window sill molding lies snugly against th'e inner, vertical faces of the flanges 5 of the side posts, and may also be secured to these flanges 5 by rive-ting or welding. The outer flange 11 I preferably arrange so as to be spaced a slight distance outward from the outer vertical faces of the sidev posts so as to provide a space beween said flange and webs, said space being adapted to receive the upper edges 17 of the sheathing plates 18, which are employed to close the sides of the car below the window and complete the side wall structure. The sheathing plates 18 may be secured to the webs of the side posts and to the side sill 1 by rivets, or in any other suitable manner.
I secure the upper edges 17 of the plates 18 to the side posts and the outer flange 11 of the member 9 by any means known in the art which is useful for that purpose.
Instead of forming. the belt rail member separate from the side wall sheathing, as shown in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, I may employ the construction illustrated in Fig. 8, in ywhich the belt rail member is formed integral with the upper edge portion of the side wall sheathing, which dispenses with the necessity of uniting a separate sheathing plate or plates with the belt rail by riveting.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United .States is- In a railway car structure, a floor structure, side posts rising therefrom, a channelshaped member extending lengthwise of the car and having its central web pierced to provide openings to receive said side posts,
.said channel-shaped member being so located that its web forms the window sills and its flanges respectively form an external belt rail and an interior window sill molding, and an upturned flange integral with the channel-shaped member adjacent each opening therein and engaging the respective side posts and united thereto. j
