PETER IKRUSE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO E. W. BLISS COMPANY, "OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
SHEET-METAL-WORKING MACHINE.
'- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented O t, 23, 1917.
Original application filed October 8, 1915, Serial No. 54,757. Divided and this application filed April 5,
1916. Serial No. 89,047.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER KRUSE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve- .ments in Sheet-Metal-Working Machines,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet metal work- 'ing machines and aims to provide certain.
my application Serial Number 54,7 57 filed October 8, 1915. I
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings.
The invention has been shown as incorporated in a machine for making can bodies. The invention may, however, be otherwise embodied and otherwise applied.
in said drawings,-
Figure l is a side elevation of so much of a body-making machine as is necessary to illustrate the invention;
Figs. '2 and 3 are respectively a vertical sectional view, and a top plan view, illustrating in detail an-embodiment of the improved feeding means.
In said drawings, the letter A designates or bench forming the frame of the machine, the general construction of the machine being similar to that described in my United States Patent No. 1,081,050, dated December 9, 1913. B is a feed bar working in a suitable guide-way in the top face of the table A (there being'usually a plurality ofsuch feed bars), the feed bar being preferably attached to a slide block or piece 0, and adapted to be reciprocated by a suitable means, as for instance, a train of links and levers b b 72 connected to a crank pin 6 upon a disk I) mounted upon a main drive-shaft D. The feed bar or bars B are provided with feed. fingers E.
The arms E are pivoted upon the feed bars B as at e, and are adapted-to be depresse against the pressure of a spring a as they move rearwardly, being so depressed is a flanging mechanism by which flanges or hooks are formed on the notched sides of the sheets, and F is a body forming I mechanism comprising a horn G around which the sheets are bent and the ends interlocked and joined in well-known manner. The function of the feed mechanism is to feed the sheets of metal to an exact position with relation to these several mechanisms F F ,-and F it being essential to the formation of a can that the sheets be operated uponv at precise points by the several mechanisms, and that the ends of the sheets and the notches therein shall properly match when wrapped around the horn and the ends joined. 7
.Sheets of meta are fed to'the machine in any suitable manner (by hand if desired), and are carried forward by the feed fingers upon successive reciprocation of the cod bars B. An automatic feed I is shown, the construction of which is fully described in Patent No. 1,081,050 aforesaid. As the feed bars B move forward, the sheets of metal Xare carried forward by the. feed fingers beyond stops H H and H mounted upon a fixed part of the machine. The sheets of metal are preferably moved slightly beyond the stops, ment of the feed fingers are moved rearwardlyagainst the stops H H or H by suitable means, as by the means P illus-' trated herein,
As shown, the means P may comprise a bar or blade p havinga cam face 12 thereon. The bar 2 is adapted to move or reciprocate vertically, and to this end it may conveniently be mounted upon a reciprocating part of the notching mechanism F (or the moving part ,of a'nother mechanism), as illustrated at 10 The ;'means P act to push the sheet rearwardly against the stops -H Strips b are preferably provided, which are adapted to bear upon the upper sides of the sheets X with slight friction, the friction, however, not being suficient to prevent the feeding or positioning movements of the sheets.
The operation of the device is as follows :--The sheets of metal are engaged by the feed fingers E, and are carried forward beyond, and preferably slightly beyond, the stops H H or H The sheets are then acted upon by the means P and pushed rearwardly against the stops. en in posi-- tion with reference to the mechanisms 18, F and F, the sheets are suitably acted upon by said mechanisms,
The inventive ideas are capable of receiving other embodiments than those specifically illustrated and described.
What is claimed is 1. ][n sheet metal working machines, combination of a feed means adapted normally advance a sheet of metal beyond a predetermined position, means adapted to operate against the advance peripheral edge of the sheet to position said sheet by moving it rearwardly, and means for moving said positioning means transversely of and out of the path of said sheet to permit the feeding of said sheet forwardly to another working position.
2. In sheet metal working machines, the combination of a feed means adapted to normally advance a sheet of metal beyond a predetermined position, a stop, aneans adapted to operate against the advance peripheral edge of the sheet to position said sheet by moving it rearwardly against said the intense stop, and means for moving said positioning means transversely of and out of the path of said sheet to permit the feeding of said sheet forwardly to another working position.
3. ln sheet metal working machines, the
combination of a feed means adapted to normally advance a sheet of metal beyond a predetermined position, a stop for pre- I reciprocating working part, and a set-back' finger carried by said reciprocating part, adapted to operate against the advance peripheral edge of the sheet to accurately position said sheet by moving it rearwardly,
In sheet metal working machines, the
said reciprocating part carrying said setback means out of the path of said sheet to permit the feeding of said sheet forwardly to another position beyond said working mechanism.
In witness whereof, l have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' PETER KRUSE.
