1. SAUNDERS. METHOD AND APPARATUS F ODUClN IS AND SUNK DAIS EMBOSSIN G- APPL N FILED 22.1916. I 1,243,226. Patented 0@1.16,1917.
JOHN SAUNDERS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIG'NOR TO SMITH & MARSH INCORPORATED, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed May 22, 1916. Serial No. 99,237.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN SAUNDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Method and Apparatus for Producing Dais and Sunk-Dais Embossing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the engravers art, and the principal object of my invention is to provide a method and apparatus by which various forms of embossing may be impressed upon paperor the like and by which words or other symbols may be printed on the embossed portion or on'the background from which the embossed portion is raised.
In my invention, I provide a die which raises a portion of the paper to an embossed plane, in combination with means for printing words or symbols either on the embossed plane or on the original plane of the paper.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only: Q
Figure 1 is a front'view of a piece of paper on which an embossed design has been produced by my method.
Fig. 2 is a section through said paper, and
Fig. 3 is the die by means of which the embossing has been done.
- Fig. 4 is a more ornate design in which 1 both'a raised and sunk dais appear.
' material.
Fig. 5 is a section through the paper of Fig.4, on the line w -m of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a section through the. die, by means of which the impression is produced.
Referring to the modification of the in vention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it will be seen that letters 11 are formed on'the origi nal plane of the paper 10, said letters 11 appearing on this plane. and a raised dais 12 being shown above'the plane of the paper 10 on which letters 13 appear." The design is produced by means of the die shown in Fig. 3 in which 14 is a die and 15 is a removable facing of sheet brass, sheet steel, or any such The die 14 has the letters 13 en: graved thereon as shown at 1'6, and the removable facing has a dais opening 17 corresponding to theraised dais'12. lilngraved on the facing 15, as shown at 18, are the letters 11. The letters 11 and the letters 13 may appear in the same color, or in different colors, or one or both may be impressed on the paper'without being colored. If it is desired to produce the design in two colors, for example, to have the letters 11 .red, and the letters 13 blue, the operator proceeds as follows:
, Theffacing 15 is removed from the die 14 and the engraved spaces f 16 are inked in blueink and wiped in accordance with the regular manner. of producing engraved designs. The facing 15 is then placed on the die 14 and held in place by a turned-down fiange, and the engraving 18 is inked in red, and the die, 14 wiped. A single stroke of the press will then produce the design as shown in Fig. 1,with the letters 11 in red and the letters 13 in blue.
As far as I am aware this is the only method by which multi-colored embossed designs. may be produced with one stroke of the press. If it is desired to use the same color of ink in both designs, exactly the same process is used, except that the same color of ink is used in the engraving 18 as is used in the engraving 16.
The great advantage of the removable facing 15 is that it enables the engraving 16, which is to produce the letters 13, to be inked and wiped asin the usual way. If the facing 15 were an integral part of the die 14, it would be impossible to ink the engraving 16 without getting ink into the corners of the depression 17. It would also be diflicult, or impossible, to use two colors, as may be used in my invention as described above. v
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 4, the original plane of the paper 20 is provided with a raised dais 21 and. with .a sunk dais 22, certain markings 23 appearing on the plane of the paper, certain letters 24 appearing on the raised dais, and certain markings 25 appearing on the sunk dais.
In the means illustrated in Fig. 6 for producing this result, a die 26 is supplied with an outer removable facing 2-7 and a removable "sunk daismember 28. The die 26'is engraved, as shown at 29, to produce the letters 24, the removable facing 27 is engraved as shown at 30 to produce the mark ings 23, and the removable member 28 is engraved as shown at 31 to produce the markings 25. The central portion 28 may be secured in the die by means of a pin 32, orby the usual waxed card-board used by embossers, or by any other convenient means.
The method of operating the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 is as follows: i
The facing 27 and the removable member 28 are removed from the die 26 and the engraving 29 is inked in any color desired. The facing 27 is then put in place and the engraving 30 is inked in the same or any other color, and the member 28 is put in place and the engraving 31 is inked in any other color desired. A single stroke of the press will then produce the raised design, shown in 4 in which the letters 24, markings 25 and the markings 23 all appear in difierentcolors, or in the same color, or some or allof them may'appear asembossed letters without color.
Other modifications of my invention will be evident to anyone skilled in the art, as, for example, a second. facing may be placed over the first facing for the purpose of producing an additional plane on which further engraving may be out, if desired.
