Be it known that I, HERMAN F. SENFT- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Push Map-Tacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in map tacks, such as may be used as markers to keep records of routes, territories, highways, surveys, bridges and in general to locate and visualize work of any description which may be indicated upon maps, charts, or diagrams.
It consists of push-pins with heads fitted to receive a silicate ivorine or equivalent surface capable of receiving erasable markings or characters, and means to removably hold such surfaces in place.
It also includes details of construction which will be morev fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an enlarged view of a tack.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation.
In complicated systems, such as the various utilities of a city, including police, fire alarm, sewer, electric lighting and street paving systems, routes and territories of traveling salesmen, and similar operations, it has been found that by visualizing the system in various ways it is much more effective and easier to keep correctly than simple card and other similar methods. As
an illustration, the territory and towns to be visited by traveling salesmen, the dates when they are to be in any certain place, and their itinerary in general may be indicated upon a map or chartfby a series of markers, and the daily changes may be indicated by a change in the markers, which will show at a glance.
In my invention I employ thumb or pushtacks A that may be xed at desired points inthe surface of the chart or other indicator, such tacks having substantially flat heads 2 and means to secure thereon a removable surface of silicate ivorine, or similar substance 3, capable of receiving proper indications or markings which may be erased and changed from period to period, as necessity requires, said tacks having different colors or indicators applicable tothe different systems shown upon the chart.
For this purpose the periphery of the head may be exposed outside of the inscribed surface 2 and colored, as at 4:. The
head within the circumscribed end and secured thereto by any suitable means. I have shown such means to consist of thin flexible projections from the periphery of the head 2, as shown at 5; these projections being capable of being turned down over the surface to be marked, so as to confine the surface in place, but also to be turned to release it when required. This surface may be inscribedvwith the desired characters or symbols in such a manner as to be erased,
and replaced by others, as required from time to time, and the chart, map or other surface kept continually up to date and in readiness for instant inspection without changing the tacks or their positions.
Various forms and variations may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, as disclosed in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In combination with a barb-like member, a disk secured to said member, and a series of independent spaced bendable projections integrally connected at one end to the disk periphery, said projections being bent inwardly to overlie the outer face of the disk and being bent outwardly to form shoulders and having their free ends extending inwardly to lie substantially parallel to the outer face of the disk, and a label seated on the outer face of the disk and having its periphery engaged with said shoulders and its outer face engaged with said free ends of the fingers, said label being of less diameter than that of the disk so as to have its periphery protected by the part of the disk which extends out from the label periphery.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN F. SENFTNER.
