FOLDING DRINKING-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1917.
Application filed December 22, 1916. Serial No. 138,395.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. HARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Folding Drinking-Cup, of which the following a specification. 4
The present invention has for its object the provision of a novel and improved folding drinking cup Which can be readily and inexpensively formed from a blank of paper or other suitable material, which can be folded in order to be readily carried about and transported, and which is provided with an improved bottom construction to prevent leakage.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cup looking from below.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cup partially folded.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the cup is formed.
The cup is formed from a'blank of paper or other suitable material, which may be paraiiined or otherwise treated to make it water proof. The cup is of triangular form, being provided with the three rectangular side walls 1, 2 and 3, the wall 1 being intermediate the walls 2 and 3 in the blank as seen in Fig. 3, and there being fold lines 4 and 5 between the wall 1 and the respective walls 2 and 3. United with the free edge of the wall 3 is a flap 6, there being a fold line 7 between the wall 3 and the flap 6, and the flap 6 is pasted or otherwise secured in overlapping relation to the free edge portion of 'the wall 3.
The cup has a triangular bottom 8 united with the lower end of the intermediate wall 1, there being a fold line 9 between said wall 1 and bottom 8. The bottom 8 is attached to the walls 2 and '3 by means of flaps 1O united with the side edges of the bottom 8, there being fold lines 11 between the bottom 8 and flaps 10, and said flaps are folded upwardly and pasted or otherwise secured in overlapping relation against the lower end portions of the walls 2 and 3.
In order to prevent leakage at the two corners between the'wall 1 and the walls 2 and 3, the blank has gussets 12 united with the lower ends of the walls 2 and 3 adjacent to the wall 1 and bottom 8, and also united with the corresponding ends of the flaps 10, there being fold lines 13 between the gussets 12 and flaps 10 and fold lines 14 between the gussets 12 and walls 2 and 3, whereby the gussets 12 fold behind the flaps 10 when they are folded upwardly, and said gussets can be pasted to the walls 2 and 3 and flaps 10 to thereby prevent leakage at these corners.
Leakage at the other lower corner between the walls 2 and 3 is prevented by the provision of a gusset 15 with which the blank is provided at the free corner of the bottom 8, said gusset 15 being united with the free ends of the flaps 10 and the free corner of the bottom 8. The gusset 15 has a fold line 16 at its intermediate portion, and there are fold lines 17 between said gusset 15 and the flaps 10. The gussets 15 have diagonal fold lines 18 between the fold lines 16 and 17. Thus, the gusset 15 is folded on the fold line 16 to fit the corner between the walls 2 and 3, and the gusset is folded on the lines 17 and 18 to provide tucks doubled behind the ends of the flaps 10 and pasted. The gusset 15 therefore prevents leakage at this corner.
To enable the cup to be folded into fiat position, whereby it can be readily carried in the pocket, and in order that a number of the swung toward one another, the bottom 8 is folded upwardly on the fold lines 20, 21
and 22 between the walls 2 and 3. The triangular portions of the bottom 8 defined by the fold lines 11, 20 and 21 fold upwardly against the walls 2 and 3, while the trianguof the intermediate'side wall, the side edges of the bottom having flaps to overlap and be secured to the other side walls, gussets between said flaps and the lower ends of the last mentioned side walls to fold behind said flaps, and a gusset united with" the free ends of said flaps and the free corner of the bottom and having fold lines to enable the last mentioned gusset to fit the corner between the last mentioned side walls and to provide tucks to fit behind said flaps.
