FLUSHING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
Application filed December 19, 1914. Serial H0. 878,110.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT J. CoBURN and FRANK Hair in, citizens of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flushing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention pertains to siphon flushing apparatus; and it contemplates the provision or" a siphon flushing apparatus in which the parts are so constructed and relatively arranged that the necessity of using rubber and other packing material is obviated, this with a view of preventing leaks after a short period of: use and prolonging the usefulness of the apparatus as a whole.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section showing a tank equipped with a flushing apparatus constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking downwardly.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The tank 1 is of conventional type, and is equipped with a fixed upright pipe 2, designed to be connected in the novel manner with a Water closet bowl. Loosely surrounding and movable vertically on the pipe 2 is a casing 3 from the upper end of which a conduit 4 leads laterally and then downwardly as shown. Within the casing 3 the said conduit 42 is provided with a flared mouth 5 designed to seat on the upper end of the pipe as shown. The said mouth 5, however, is not essential, nor is it essential for any part of the conduit 1 to seat on or in the pipe 2.
At its lower end the casing 3 is provided with a wall 6 which is apertured as indicated by 7 and is provided with a flange 8 that loosely surrounds the pipe 2. In the said flange 8 is arranged a tension wire 9 which surrounds the pipe 2, this with a view to diminishing the friction while preventing leakage from the portion of the casing bottom around the pipe 2. Fixed to and extending between the casing bottom 6 and the mouth 5 or other suitable upper part of the casing are guide rods 10, and fixed on said guide rods 10 is an annulus 12, designed to serve as a stop. Movable vertically on the guide rods 10 and between the casing bottom 6 and the stop 12 is a thin plate valve 13, preferably of metal, which is designed to close the apertures 7 in the casing bottom 6 when the casing 3 is raised. Connected with the upper end of the casing 3 is one arm of a vertically-swinging lever, the other arm of which is designed to be connected to a depending pull cord in the ordinary well known manner.
In practice the water supplied to the tank 1 passes through the apertures 7 and raises the valve 13 and seeks its level in the casing 3. Upward movement of the valve 13 is limited by the stop 12, and when the casing 3 is raised the Weight of the water therein will promptly seat the valve 13 with the result that the water in the casing will be carried above the upper end of the pipe 2 whereupon it will operate to start the siphon action. When the casing 3 is released subsequently to the operation described, the casing will gravitate to the position shown in Fig. 1 ready for another operation.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a flushing apparatus, the combination of a tank, an upright pipe fixed therein and adapted to lead water downwardly therefrom, a vertically-movable casing surrounding the pipe and having an apertured bottom and also having a flange on said bottom surrounding the pipe, a tension wire arranged in said flange and engaging said pipe, a conduit connected with the upper end of the casing and extending laterally and then downwardly and open at its lower end to the interior of the tank, upright rods grouped about the pipe and extending between and connected with the bottom of the casing and the upper portion thereof, an annular stop fixed to said pipe and spaced above the bottom of the casing, a valve plate set our hands in presence of two subscribing surrounding the pipe and movable vertically Witnesses.
