GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1&5, 1915.
Application filed September 17, 1914. Serial No. 862,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN V. F BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wood and metal workers tools and more particularly to scribes or gages.
The main object of the invention is to improve upon devices of this general character to such an extent as to provide an extremely simple gage having means whereby a scribing instrument carried thereby, may be accurately adjusted.
A further object is to provide a laterally swinging scribing element whereby the device may be used upon bodies having either right angular, acute angular, or obtuse an gular corners.
Yet another object is to construct the en tire device in the most simple manner con sistent with its proper operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination here in described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a bar showing the application of my invention in scribing or marking the same; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention removed from 3 is a detail vertical section as seen on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a similar view as seen on the line 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a Hat bed plate having a longitudinal bracing rib 2 on its upper side, one end of said plate being decreased in width as indicated at 3 and increased in thickness as seen at 4. This end of the plate 1 is notched to provide a pair of par- 50 grooved longitudinally to provide a pair of parallel ribs 6.
while it is likewise upon its upper side allel bearing ears 5 Located between the ribs 6 and having an ear 7 which depends between the ears 5, is a vertically adjustable head 8 which is provided with a laterally extending nose 9 likewise lying between the ribs 6 and forced normally upward by a coil spring 10 which is interposed between said nose and the plate 1, a set screw 11 being provided for the purpose of moving said nose downwardly. By reference more particularly to Fig. 3, it will be seen'that the screw 11 passes loosely through the nose 9 and is threaded into the plate 1. 1t will be-further seen that a transverse pivot pin 12 passes through the ears 5 and 7 whereby, when said screw 11 is loosened, the spring 10 will force the nose 9 upwardly thereby rocking the head 8 in one direction around its pivot 12, While when said screw 11 is tightened, the head will be moved into opposite direction around its pivot. This slight adjustment becomes essential in a manner to be hereinafter set forth.
Projecting transversely through the head 8 is the shank 13 of a headed and shouldered bolt, the head 14 of said bolt bearing against one side of the head 8 while the shoulder 15 thereof is revolubly mounted in a circular opening formed through said head. It will be seen that the shank 13 projects laterally from the opposite side of the head 8 and receives thereon a washer 16, a thumb nut 17, and a coil spring 18 which encircles said shank and is interposed between the washer 16 and the nut 17, the latter being preferably recessed for the reception of said spring. For this construction, see more particularly Fig. 4.
Depending rigidly from the head 14 is a rod 19 on which a U-shaped clamp 20 is slidably mounted, a headed and shouldered bolt 13 being here shown as passed through the arms of the clamp 20 and as receiving a clamping nut 17 on its reduced threaded end, while the head of said bolt carries a double pointed scribing instrument 21. It will be seen, more particularly by reference to Fig. 5, that a coil spring 18 is interposed between the nut 17 and the shoulder on the bolt 13. It will likewise be seen that loosening of the thumb nut 17 loosens the clamp 20 to allow the same to be adjusted vertically upon the rod 19 and likewise allows the headed and shouldered bolt 13 to be turned to properly adjust the instrument 21.
With the parts as above described, the device is employed as illustrated in Fig. 1, in which position the bed plate 1 is designed to slide upon the bar B or other object being marked while the rod 19 depends substantially parallel to one side of said bar, the instrument 21 being then adjusted to approximately the proper point on said rod. This adjustment having been made, the set screw 11 is now turned in the proper direction to accurately position said instrument 21 at the exact point to be marked. The entire tool may be then moved longitudinally upon the bar or other object thereby causing the active end of the instrument 21 to mark or scribe the same as indicated in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that an extremely simple construction has been provided for carrying out the objects of the invention and that the device will be highly efilcient in operation and may be used for marking objects having differently shaped corners by merely swinging the rod 19 around its pivot, to the proper position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described com- 001716 of this patent'may be obtained for nally upon its upper prising a bed plate having one end reduced in width and increased in thickness, said end being notched to provide apair of parallel bearing ears, and being grooved longitudiface to provide a pair of parallel ribs, a head block between the ribs and having an ear located between the ears on the bed plate, a transverse pivot pin projecting throughthe ears on the bed plate and the intervening ear on the head block, a nose projecting inwardly from said head block and likewise lying between said ribs, a spring between said nose and the base plate, an adjusting screw passing loosely through said nose and threaded into said bed plate, a through said head, a clamping nut on .sald bolt, and a scribing instrument carried by the head of said bolt.
headed bolt passing transversely In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
