To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL J. HOPPER and HARRY SOLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at WVoodstock, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in door supports and has forits object to provide a support for carpenters use which will automatically clamp and sustain the door while it is being prepared for hanging and which also will automatically release the door when the latter is lifted by the workmen.
A further object is to provide such a support which is capable of being adjusted to the varying sizes of doors and whose parts may readily be disassembled for packing.
These and other objects are accomplished by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing a door supported therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a member of the door clamp. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the complete device. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 represents a spring support which is secured at each end upon a base 2, by means of a wing nut 3. Each of these bases consists of a tubular element, having flaring terminal portions 4 which are brought to an edge and are adapted to engage slightly in the floor upon which the support rests and thus tend to prevent lateral movement. At a short distance from each base member is fixed in g the longitudinal center of the spring support a stud 5, each carrying a wing nut 6, and upon each stud is slidably mounted a clamp member 7 having a longitudinal slot 8 in its base portion adapted to receive a stud 5. At the inner end of each base portion is an upstanding portion 9 whose outer face is formed at an acute angle with reference to the case and each of said inclined portions is covered with a facing 10 of rubber, leather or other flexible material which will prevent the marring of the door or other object upon which the clamps may be closed.
The support will be positioned convenlent to the workman and the door upon which he is working will be placed edgewise upon the spring support 1, between the clamps 9, said clamps having previously been adjusted to the thickness of the door and secured in place by means of the nuts 6. The weight of the door will depress the spring support to the floor causing the tubular bases to roll slightly; and as the flanges 4 are continuous their hold in the floor will not be released no matter to what extent they may roll. As the support is depressed the upright members 9 of the clamps will rock forward and engage upon the door, the weight of which will cause them to hold firmly thereon and thus sustain the door for the workman. When the door is raised the spring will assume a horizontal position thus causing the clamp to automatically open and release its hold.
lVhen the support is not in use the base portions 2 may be quickly detached by removing the nuts. 3, and the parts will then pack neatly in the tool box.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An article of the class described comprising a pair of cylindrical base members, an edged bead or flange formed transversely about each end of each of said members, a spring element secured at an intermediate point upon the base members and clamp members secured upon said spring intermediate the base members.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of cylindrical base members, a floor engaging flange formed at each terminal of said members, a spring element detachably secured at an intermediate point upon the base members, clamps adjustable relatively to each other secured centrally thereon, and a facing element secured upon each clamp.
