Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMOND E. VILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Smoke-Consumer, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and efficient device by means of which steam at high temperature may be injected into the fire box of a furnace above the fuel, carrying with it streams of air which have been caused to preliminarily serve as a jacket for the steam pipes.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a setting of ordinary type equipped with my improved apparatus; Fig. 2 a plan of the steam-injecting nozzle structure; and Fig. 3 an elevation in partial vertical section of said nozzle structure.
In the drawings, 10 indicates an ordinary boiler setting having a front plate or face plate 11 protected by a brick wall 12 and having a fire box 13. At suitable points across the fire box, the wall 12 is provided with L-shaped pockets 14 which lie opposite perforations 15 in the face plate 11. My improved nozzle structure comprises an in termediate four-way T 21 having an inlet pipe 22, oppositely extending pipes 23, 23, and a downwardly extending pipe 24. At its outer end each pipe carries an elbow 25, the downwardly extended end of which carries a pipe 26 similar to pipe 24. The pipes 24 and 26 at their lower ends carry reduc-' ing elbows 27, the smaller ends of which are substantially horizontal, directed rearwardly, and provided with short pipe sections 28.
Within the T 21 is mounted a considerably smaller four-way T 31 provided with a supply pipe 32, oppositely extending pipes 33, 33 and a depending pipe 34. Each pipe 33 at its outer end carries a T 35 carrying a depending pipe 36 and horizontally-extending pipe 37, which latter is pro ected through a perforation 38 in the elbow 25, the outer end of this pipe being closed by a cap 39 which bears against the T 25 and thus prevents longitudinal movement of the pipe 33. The pipes 34 and 36 extend downwardly through the pipes 24 and 26, respectively, and each of these pipes carries at its lower end a reducing elbow 40 carrying a horizontal nozzle 41 which is formed by flattening one end of a short section of pipe slightly longer than the pipe 28. Each of the pipes 36 is projected upwardly into its T 35 so that its inner end lies considerably above the bottom of the interior of the pipe 33, and pipe 34 is similarly projected into the T 31, so that a more uniform distribution of steam to the several depending pipes can be obtained than would be possible if these pipes extended into the Ts in the ordinary manner.
It will be noted that the steam piping above described is pivotally supported within the air pipes upon the short pipe sections 37 as trunnions and the normal gravity position of the parts would thus place the nozzles 41 close to the bottom of the outer ends of pipes 28. Convenient means for adjusting the nozzles 41 vertically in the pipes 28 may thus be obtained by providing the open inlet end of pipe 22 with a fitting 42 having a horizontal flange 43 overlying the steam pipe 32 and carrying an adjusting screw 44 which either directly engages the pipe 32 or a collar 32 mounted thereon.
The nozzle structure is mounted in position with the several depending pipes 24 and 26 in the pockets 14 of the wall 12 and with the pipes 22 and 32 projected outwardly through the perforation 15 in the face plate 11 and pipe 32 connected to a suitable supply line which, if desired, may be equipped with a common form of controlling valve operated automatically by an opening of the firing door and controlled in its closing by a dash pot. The automatic valve construc tion is well known.
In operation, steam, preferably under considerable pressure, is delivered through the steam pipes into the combustion chamber and the directions of the jets may be readily adjusted by an adjustment of screw 44.
The outer end of the air pipe 22 is open and there will be some slight movement of air through the air pipes, due to the draft in the combustion chamber, but this movement will be comparatively slight because the nozzles 41 project beyond the inner ends of pipes 28 and consequently there is no material cooling of the steam as it passes through the pipes.
I claim as my invention:
1. A steam jet structure for smoke consumers, comprising a horizontally arranged air tube having depending and forwardlyice discharging tubular portions and an inlet pipe, and a steam pipe structure of considerably smaller diameter pivotally mounted in said air tube and having corresponding horizontal and depending forwardly-delivering portions.

A steam jet structure for smoke consumers, comprising a horizontally arranged air tube having depending and forwardlydischarging tubular portions and an inlet pipe, a steam pipe structure of considerably smaller diameter pivotally mounted in said air tube and having corresponding horizontal and depending forwardly-delivering portions, and means for swinging said steam pipe structure Within the air tube and holding the same at desired positions of adjustment.
3. A steam jet structure for smoke consumers comprising a horizontally arranged air tube having depending and forwardlydischarging tubular portions, a considerably smaller horizontal steam pipe arranged in the horizontal portion of the air pipe and havin trunnions at its ends pivotally supported in the ends of the horizontal air pipe, depending steam pipes carried by said horizontal steam pipe and extended through the depending air pipes, horizontally extending nozzle pipes carried by the lower ends of the depending steam pipes, an inlet air pipe leading into the horizontal airpipe, and an inlet steam pipe leading into the horizontal steam pipe through said inlet air pipe.
4. A steam jet structure for smoke consumers comprising a horizontally arranged air tube. having depending and forwardlydischarging tubular portions, a considerably smaller horizontal steam pipe arranged in the horizontal portion of the air pipe and having trunnions at its ends pivot- I ally supported in the ends of the horizontal air pipe, depending steam pipes carried by said horizontal steam pipe and extended through the depending air pipes, horizontally extending nozzle pipes carried by the lower ends of the depending steam pipes, a horizontally arranged inlet air pipe leading into the horizontal air pipe, an inlet steam pipe leading into the horizontal steam pipe through said inlet air pipe, and an adjusting screw carried by the inlet air pipe and overlying and engaging the inlet steam pipe.
5. A steam jet structure for smoke consumers comprising a horizontally arranged air tube having depending and forwardlydischarging tubular portions, a considerably smaller horizontal steam pipe arranged in the horizontal portion of the air pipe and having trunnions at its ends pivotally supported in the ends of the horizontal air pipe, depending steam pipes carried by said horizontal steam pipe and extended through the depending air pipes, and horizontally extending nozzle pipes carried by the lower ends of the depending steam pipes.
6. A steam jet structure for smoke consumers comprising a horizontally arranged air tube havin depending and forwardlydischarging tubular portions and an inlet pipe leading from the atmosphere to said horizontal air tube, a steam pipe structure of considerably smaller diameter pivotally mounted in said air tube and having corresponding horizontal and depending forwardly-delivering portions, and a steam inlet pipe leading to said steam pipe structure through said inlet pipe.
