JAMES ELIE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HANDLE-SWITCH.
menace.
- Application filed November 13, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES ELIA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in handle switches for metal finishing or bufl'- ing machines and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of a simple nature, one which 'will be durable and economical in construction and eflicient in use.
@ther objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in .ligure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a builing tool embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail illustrating the connection of the handle with the motor of the device.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a substantially cylindrical handle 1 formed of an insulating or non-conducting material, preferably wood. Secured to and project ing from one end of the handle 1 is a substantially cylindrical metallic cap 2, the front end of said cap being closed. Secured. as by soldering, to the front end of the cap 2 is ascrew threaded plug 3 similar to the plug of an ordinary electric light globe. The metallic casing of the plug 3'whioh, when the device is in use, serves as an electrical conductor of the electric current from the conductor wires to the motor heieinafter described, is formed with a rearwardly projecting arm 4, said arm projecting through a perforation 1 formed in the end of cap 2 and being connected with one of the conductor wires 5 which project through longitudinal passages 6 provided for the reception thereof in the handle 1;.sai d Wires projecting to and being connected with any suitable source of electrical energy. The contact 7 provided at the outer end of the plug 3 and which is insulated from the metallic casing of the latter, is connected with Specification of Letters Patent.

theforward end of a rcarwardly projecting spring arm 8, said arm projecting through a perforation 8 provided in the end wall of cap 2. Mounted on the forward end of the handle 1 within the cap 2 is .a spring arm 9 which is connected as shown with the other of the conductor wires The arms or contacts through the medium of a sliding switch member 10. The member 10 is provided at its outer end with an exteriorly projecting button 11 of insulating material, the opening 12 in the cap 2 which permits of the passage of said button being elongated in order to permit of sliding movement thereof for making and breaking the connection between the contacts 8 and 9. The button 11 is provided at its base with a circumferential flange 11 which engages against the inner side of the adjacent wall of cap 2, the resiliency of thespring member 9 serving to force the member 10 outwardly so that the flange 11 forcibly engages against said inner surface of said cap, thereby serving to frictionally maintain the switch member 10 in any position to which the same may be adjusted. The button 11 is so positioned as will be observed, that the same may be readily engaged by the thumb of the operator for readily making or breaking the motor circuit.
Arranged at the forward end of the bandle 1 is an electric motor 13 of any ordinary or preferred design. The stationary casing of the motor 13 is provided at the side thereof adjacent the handle with a socket formed of the outer casing 14 rigidly secured as by bolting to said motor casing, the inner screw-threaded metallic lining 15, and the inter1nediate layer of porcelain or other suitable insulating material 16. Said socket is detachably engaged by the plug 3 of the handle 1, the threads of said plug being adapted to engage with the threads of lining 15. The motor and handle are securely locked together by means of a set screw 17 threaded in an car 18 formed upon the cap 2, the inner end of said screw being adapted to engage against the adjacent side of the socket casing 14 as clearly illustrated. I
Projecting inwardly from the metallic casing 16 of the socket is a spring contact run 19 ada ted to engage one of the terxhinals 20 o the motor, a contact 21 mounted in a cup-like bearing member 22 formed of insulating material engaging the other 8 and 9 are electrically connected terminal 23 of the motor at its inner end,
the outer end of the contact 21 being posi-.
' shown in-order toadapt the same for serv- .1ce as a bearing for the adjacent extremity of the driven shaft 24: of the motor.
' With the construction set forth it will be seen that the current from the source of electrical energy will pass through one of the conductor Wires 5 to arm 4, thence to the metallic outer Wall of plug 3 to metallic lining 15 of the socket, whence the same will pass through contact 19 to terminal 20 of the motor. From the'motor the current will pass from terminal 23 to contact 21, thence to contact 7, arm 8, through switch member 10, arm 9, and thence through the return conductor wire 5 to the source. The circuit thus constituted is controlled by the switch 10 and may be made or broken by simply engaging and moving the button 11.
While 1 have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1.
- therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An electrical switch comprising a casing having a slot therein; a switch member extending through said slot and longitudinally slidable on said casing, said switch member having a shoulder against the inner side of I said casing; a button on the outer end of said switch member engaging the outer side of said casing; a spring contact member in said casing parallelwith the path of move ment of said switch member and constantly pressing against the inner end of said switch member; the inner end of said switch member being off-set and provided with a beveled face and a second contact member in said casing and having an-mchned end i
