To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN BIGLANDS PEARSON, a British subject, residing at Dublin, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Standards for \Vire Fences or Similar Purposes, of which.

the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in standards or posts for strained wire and other fences, and particularly to standards made of sheet iron or other metal wherein the wires are made to pass through the center of the standard or post. The standard is suitable for use with barbed wire, interlaced or woven wire, or electrically welded wire.

The invention consists in making each standard in three parts, one part being prepared to take the wires and provided with a base which is placed in earth or concrete as desired, one part being formed to slide over the first part and lock the wires in position and one part being formed as a base for the locking piece.

The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the standard. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line w w Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is .an enlarged section on line y-y Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the parts A and B.

The standard is formed in three parts, the member A which carries the wires, the member B which slides over the member A and locks the Wires in position and the member C which forms a half base for the locking member B.

The member A which carries the wires is made approximately U-shape in cross section and the vertical edges a of this member are bent as shown in the drawings to form a slide or guide for the edges 1) of the looking member B. Holes or slots at are formed in the edges a of the member A to receive the wires D. The member B is also made approximately U-shape in cross section and the edges 1) thereof are bent to pass around the edges a of the member A which form a guide for the edges 6.

The lower end of the member A is provided with an approximately U-shaped base A to which is attached a U-shaped base C for the member B so that the latter can be placed in position after the standard Specification of Letters Patent.

The slots or holes a to receive the wires D can be placed at any desired position to suit the diiferent spaces of the wires and the whole standard is held together by a cap E at the top which is secured by a hook bolt 0' and nut e the hook bolt clipping round the top fence wire as shown in Fig. 2.

The standards may be galvanized or painted and may be fixed in earth, concrete, or other suitable material. When erecting, the member A and the half base C are fixed in the earth or concrete, the wires D are then placed in the slots a and the locking member B slipped over the member A from the top. The cap E is then placed in position, the hook bolt 6 inserted under the top wire and the nut e tightened until the whole standard is firmly held together. When it is required to remove the locking member B for any purpose it is only necessary to unscrew the nut 6 remove the hook bolt 6 and cap E and draw up the member B.

What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A standard for fence wires comprising, in combination, a member of substantially U-section, having its longitudinal edges turned laterally outward, and bent to form continuous guides of angle section, said edges being provided with slots for the passage of the wires therethrough; a complemental member of substantially U-section, having its longitudinal edges turned laterally outward and bent around said guides, to retain the wires in said slots; and a cap fitted over the upper ends of said members, to hold the same together.

2. A standard for fence wires comprising, in combination, a member of substantially U-section, provided at its lower end with a similar shaped base, said member and base having their longitudinal edges turned laterally outward and bent to form continuous guides of angle section, the bent edges of said member being formed with wire-receiving slots; a base complemental to the first-named base and adapted to be driven therewith into the ground, the second-named base having its longitudinal edges bent around the guides on the firstnamed base; a member of substantially U- section complemental to the first-named member and detachably fitted at its lower end upon the top of the second-named base, In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset said member having its longitudinal edges my hand in presence of two subscrlblng turned laterally outward and bent around Witnesses.
