Patented Nov. 1G, 'lln Application filed January 14, 1914. Seril No. 811,975.
To ZM Iwlw/n, 'w may Concern.
Be it known that I, ELVA C. GiNerroH, citizen of the United States, residing at rloulon, in the county Illinois, have invented inl Improvements in Spark-Plugs, ci `which the following is a specication.
My invention. relates to improvements in spark plugs, and has flor its principal object the provision or such a device having a contact member which may be removed therefronnthe device being so consti". ated that this removal may be eilected Without stop. ping the engine, and still. retain the compression of the cylinder l'romwhich this memoer is removed.
A. further object is the provision of such a device having a removable contact member and also having a valve there-in, so that when the contact ma iber is removed, the valve may be closed to retain the compression of the cylinder.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objectsas may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and then sought to be delined in the appendd claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and which shows merely tor the purpose of illustrative disclosure, preferred embodiment of my in: vention, it being understood that various changes may be made in practice Within the scope of the claims, Without digressing from my inventive idea.
ln the draWingsz-Figure 1 is a vertical section through a device constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevae tion 'of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion thereof, the valve being indi,- cated in its closed position in dottedlines.
lt is found in practice in the operation of internal combustion engines that the spark plugs become fouled from a deposit of carbon or other material, causing ignition trouble, the usual remedy being the stopping of the engine and the removal andeaamination or repairpf the spark plug. Under these conditions, it is my object to obviate 'the necessity of stopping the engine for such examination or repair and lat-tain this object by providing a sparlr plug having av removable contect member and having a valve construction so that the valve may be closed on the removal of the Contact member thus oi' Stark and State ofcertain new and useretaining the compression of the-cylinder and permitting the engine to run over the other cylinders.
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral l designates .the body portion'of a spark plug constructed according to my in vention which is bored as shown and has its lower end screw-threaded as at 2 for attachment to the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the contact point 3 being provided on this lower end of the body portion. The upper portion of the'bore is screivthreaded as at el to receive the sleeve ,mehr ber 5 which is correspondingly screw-threaded, and which forms the holder for the contact member. This sleeve 5 has its upper end squared suitably to receive a tool so that it may be screwed into and out of said body portion. rlhis sleeve 5 is bored for a larger portion of its length as at 7, to receive the insulation S, the contact member passing through said sleeve and insulation and extending to the lower extremity of the body member 1. lhe upper portion or' this contact member is screw-threaded as at 10 to receive the nuts 11 so that the contact member may be assembled in connection Withthe sleeve and insulation 8. intermediate its ends this Contact member` 1t) is provided with a tapered enlargen'lent 12 which dts in a correspondingly tapered aperture 13 in the inner end of sleeve member 5, a suitable sulaticn .let of mica or similar substance being interposed therebetween. By this construction the contact member is securely connected to its holding. sleeve and insulation.
As shown, it extends downwardly to provide the second Contact point 15 positioned in proximity to the contact point 3.
The body portion of the spark plug is enlarged as at 16 and provided with a slightly tapered aperture 17 extending transversely therethrough, in which aperture is fitted the correspondingly tapered valve member 18 having the reduced screw-threaded extremital portion .19 to receive nut 2O and washer 21, the latter bearing against the side of the body portion, as shown. This valve member is provided with the enlarged aperture 22, which is positioned in line with the bore of the body portion of the spark plug, so as to permit the passage of the contact meinberll() therethrough.
Now then, when ignition or other trouble develops in a cylinder, utilizing a spari; plug constructed according to my invention. the.
sleeve and holding member 'U5' is unscrewed from the body portion 1 untilthe contact point of contact member 10 is withdrawn through the aperture 22 in the valve member 18.l At Vthis time, the sleeve and holding member 5 isvs'till partially within the body portion l. f The valve 1 8 is then turned so as 4to close thep'assage through the body .por-. tion of thespark plug rovided by itsbore and then the removal o 'the sleeve and holding member?) and the contact member 10 is completed, thevalve preventing communi? cation between` the cylinder and the atmosphere -so that the compression is retained ing sleeve or member 5 being screwed er1- tirely within the bod yportion of the spark plug to the position s own in Figi.
It is obvious that' I have rovided a device which operates eicient y as a s ark plug, which is simple in construction and `cheap to manufacture, and which in addition lembodies the advantage of being removable without the necessity of stopping the engine.
- This latter of course, is' the essential feature of my invention, it being readil seen that the accessibility of the parts o .the spark plug for examinationgand repair, is very esirable. What 1 claim -v -l. In a spark` plug, a body portion bored and adapted yto receive a contact member, e contact member removablymunted therein, said` body portion'ha'ving a contact point, and valve in said body portionadapted to be a 'tuated when 'said-'contact member. is removed 4so as to prevent communication of tliecylinder with the' atmosphere.
- 2. VA spark plug including a body portion v bored longitudinally and having a Contact 1'- point on its lower end,- a contact member removably mounted in said body portion and insulated therefrom, and having aconltact' "poiutvad pted to cooperate with said @first lmentione contact point,y a valve in said body portion havingl an aperture or Aport to permit the passage ofsai'd contact member therethrough, said valve being adapted to be actuated to close the passage through said ;bodygportion on .the removal of said, contact in?" er Y I @opten of this patent may be obtained for ave cents each, by addremini the i ommissoner o- Entente,-
rilassa including a body portion i therefrom, said. contact member having a contact point adapted to cooperate with said .rst mentioned contact point, and a valve in said body portion vadapted .to'close the `passage therethrough when the said holding sleeve or member and contact member are removed therefrom.v 'f
movable therewith and suitably insulated a. A spark plug including a body portion` .haying -a bore therethrough and a contact point atits lower end, the upper portion iceing internally screw-threaded, a holding sleeve or memberexternally screw-threaded .and adapted vto be removably held in said body portion, a contact member held in said holding sleeve 'or member and extending to the lower portion of said body portion to provide a contact .point to cooperate with said first 'mentioned contact point, a valve in said body portion having 'an aperture or port to permit the passage of said contact member therethrough,` -said valve being adapted to be actuated to close the passage throughsaid body portion when theholding sleeve or member and its contact member 5. A spark plug including a body portion adapted to be attached to a 'cylinder and hav-ing a contact point at its lewer end, said body portion being bored and` being internally screw-threaded -for a considerable portion of its length, a holding sleeve 0::y memberexternally screw-threaded to 'correspond with the'internally screwethreaded portion of said body portion and adapted to be rei moved therefrom, a' contact member secured to said holding sleeve or member and eX- tending through said bore in the body portion to provide a. contact point to cooperate with said'first mentioned contact point, said Contact member being removable from said Washington, El?. C.
are being removed from said body portion.'
