To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T.'BA 1ER, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have disastrous accidents ycaused .byaccidentallyturning off the gas. Devices of this character have been devised before but their parts were so complicated or expensive that their use was prohibited.
It is, therefore, another object of this invention to provide a cheap andv efficient structure of this type which will insure proper locking of the cock in open 0r closed position.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specic description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a 'part of this appli-y cation, and in which lFigure 1 is afperspective view of a gas heating fixture plied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof showing the valve in open position. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the valve in closed position. Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the lock shown at Fig. 4..
Referring to the drawing, and more particularly to Figs. l and 3, 1` represents an ordinary gas supply pipe which has condischarge pipe 2 having a valve casing 3 arranged within its length, as shown. This casing has the ordina Avalve/1 mounted therein which is operated by the handle 5. Pro'ecting horizontally from adjoiningsides o the valvestem are locking pins 6 which are adapted to engage in the aperture 7 formed upon the lockmg member 8 which is in the form of a leaf spring permanently secured by means of the rlvet 9 to the casin 3. Extending laterally from the head of t e-spring and on op osite sides of the aperture 7 are guiding n gers or flanges 10 which are adapted to be engaged by the pins 6 to move the same away from engagement with the stem and thereby permit easy access of the pin into the apshowmg my invention yapherture. The upper end of the spring is provided with a thu-mb piece 11 by which the same ymay be disengaged from the pins when it is necessary to turn the valve to either .open orclosed position. It will be under stood that with the present device, all that 1s necessary 1s to disengage the spring from one :of the pins and then release the same.-
The turning of the handle will bring the other 4pin into engagement with one of the flared flanges 10, thereby displacing the spring until the pin alines with the aperture .7 therein, .at which .time )the locking member .8 will spring into locking engagement with the pin and prevent further movement of the valve. With this type of valve, the usual stop pins are found to be unnecessary as the valve when turned is not only stopped into fully closed or open position but 4is also locked in such osition.
In the modi cation shown in Figs. 4.- and 5, one pin only is used, the same being indicated at 12. The spring in this instance is shown at 13 and issecured to the valve casing 3 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper end thereof is provided with an aperture 14 to engage the pm and with a laterally curved finger 15 having a iared end 16 to guide the pin into an aperture 17 which when engaged with the pin, locks the valvein open position.
