DRAWING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ept. 15,, 1191141.
Application filed August 8, 1913. Serial No. 783,732.
for drawing sheet metal, into deep dies in forming pans, basins, can covers, and the like,
and wherein the blank or sheet to be operated upon is placed over the mouth of the die and there held by an annular clamp or blank holder while the plunger descends within the annular holder and forces the sheet metal into the lower die, thus stamping it or drawing it into the desired form. These actions therefore require that the blank holder should first descend forcibly the stamped article and leave against the margin of the blank and, there pause or dwell, holding the blank firmly upon the die, while the plunger continues to descend within the holder and forces or draws the metal of the blank into the die, thus imparting the proper shape thereto. The holder still remains in its holding position during the up-stroke until the plunger is withdrawn, when the blank holder rises with it to release and permit the removal of the press ready to receive the next blank. As generally constructed, these presses are provided with but a single blank holder that in large or heavy stampings requiring several impulses or successivestamping and drawings operations, several presses are required, and where the stamping is required to be heated,
it is necessary to re-heat the blank or partially completed stamping be-. tween the successive drawing operations, thus impeding the work of completing the final article and perhaps impairing the quality of'the final finished product.
Theprimary object of this invention is to provide a generally improved drawing or stamping press, of this class, having a plurality of blank holders and plungers con; veniently arranged whereby a successive number of drawing'orstamping operations may be performed on a single press and without re-heating the blankor 5 partially completed stamping between the in Drawingwhich is used and plunger, so
bers 2 plural and operations or impulses of the press as above referred to.
With the above mentioned and other obects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and com bination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in some of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a view of the improved press partly in front elevation and partly in vertical section, "the blank holders and plungers being at the bottom of their stroke. Fig. 2, a vertical sectional .view, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, the plunger shown being elevated by. a one-quarter revolution of the crank shaft. Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. l, a horizontal sectional view taken on line 44l of Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, are diagrammatic views showing the parts in their different successive positions to illustrate different relative positions of the respective blank. holders and plungers and their actuating mechanism. Fig. 9, a horizontal sectional view of a modified form taken on the general line indicated by line 3-3 of Fig. l, in which modification two separate and distinct cross heads or slides are provided, as distinguished from the single slide or cross head as shown in Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of like parts drawings. The improved machine comprises a suitreference designate throughout all the figures of the able'base 1, upon which is mounted a fixed frame 2, forming the bearing for the working parts, said fixed frame being provided with a bed or platen 2, adapted to receiveand carry the stationary or female dies The stationary dies 3, may be removably mounted upon the bed or platen 2*, by means of bolts 3 adapted to be removably mounted in the IT-slots 3", of the bed 2. The blank holder slide or cross head l, is slidably mounted between the side or upright memof the frame by means of vertical guide members2, forming guide or slideways for receiving and containing suitably shaped vertical guide members 4, at the ends, of the blank holder slide or cross head 4.
' As a means for carrying and reciprocating the slide orv cross head 4, the latter is provided with guide lugs 4", at the front and rear sides thereof, said guide lugs being connected to connecting or toggle links 5. The links 5, are connected to crank or lever arms 6 projecting from and carried, by rock shafts 6, mounted in suitable bearings at the upper part of the frame of the machine and on opposite sidessthereof.
' The shafts 6, are provided at their ends with crank arms 6", connected to link members 7, the latter being connected to lugs .8,
of a cross head or slide 8, said slide 8, being adapted to reciprocate in a vertical direction upon a vertical guide 9, suitably mounted at one end of the frame. The slide or cross head 8, is adapted to be reciprocated by means of a connecting arm 10, said arm 10, being .suitably connected at one end to the slide 8, and at the other to a crank arm 11*, of the driving or crank shaft 11. The crank shaft 11, is provided with cranks 11 I carrying pitmans of connecting arms 12, the
The plunger frames 15, are adapted to reciprocate within the blank holder frames 13, through the medium of the pitman or connecting arms 12, to which latter they are adjustably connected through the adjustable connecting bolts 16, and internally threaded connecting members 16.
The plungers or male dies 15, are removably connected to and carried by the plunger frames 15, and may be secured to the latter in any suitable and convenient manner, as for example,by means of key members 17 as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. The plungers or male dies 15, are adapted to reciprocate within the blank holders 13, and in proper relative relation thereto, as illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 of the draw- .ings, said plungers or dies 15, being of suitable form to conform to the subjacent stationary dies 3, in accordance with the operations upon and final form to be given to the stamping, as illustrated in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
In the operation of stamping heavy sheet metal articles, the blank 18', may be first heated or annealed, and when the blank holders and plungers are in their uppermost position, as indicated in Fig. 8, of the drawings the operator or workman will place the v blank above the right-hand fixed or stationary. die so that when the corresponding or cooperating blank holder and plunger are i brought down during the working impulse or stroke of the machine, the blank 18,Will be given its first or initial form, as illus trated at the right-hand side of Fig. 1, of the drawings, and when the blank holder and plunger have moved upwardly to release the partially formed stamping, the latter may be moved to the next or left-hand die for the next or successive operation and at the same time the operator or attendant may place a new blank abovethe right-hand die so that as the blank holders and plungers are simul-.
taneously given their downward strokes, the
two blanks will be simultaneously operated upon, thus clearly increasing the speed and expediting the stamping operation and without again heating or annealing the blank in the successive stamping operations illustrated in' Fig. 1, of the drawings. In passing the partially formed blank from the first or right-hand set of dies to the second or left-hand set of dies, the workman or attendant may dip the partially formed blank .in the oil of the oil container or receptacle 19, conveniently located upon the bed or platen 2 for this purpose, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of the drawings.
If desired, a plurality or pair of cross heads 4, may be mounted in the frame 2, as illustrated 1n Fig. 9, of the drawings, in which instance, the connecting or toggle links 5, may be arranged in pairs as there shown, and each slide or cross head 4:, separated by a partitioning member or intermediate guide 2 extending between the side members of the main frame 2.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described some of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a drawing press, a compound blank holder slide consisting of a main slide, and a plurality of independent auxiliary slides adjustably mounted therein.
2. In a drawing press, a compound blank holder slide consisting of a main slide, blank holder frames mounted therein, and blank holders detachably connected to said blank holder frames.
