Description
liti/*IN1 WILLIAMS, 0F BALDWNSVLLE, YRK.
Letters Patent No. 111,626, dated January 17, 1871.
BMPROVEMENT lhl RGTARWPUMPS.
The 'Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ci the same.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that T, avnt Winnaars, of Baldu'insville, in the countyoi Onondaga and State of N ew York, have invented a' new and useful Improve ment in Rotary umps 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had-to the I accompanying drawing ,forming a peut of this specin iication, in which- Figure l is a cross-section, taken through the center ofthe pump;
Figure 2 is a sectional end View; and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like partsin tLe several figures.
In the accompanying drawing- A is a centrifugal pump, hav-,ing an open'ceuter, l5, and curved buckets a a, fig. 12;.
(l is thecasing or outside shell D l is the driving-shaft and pulley;
E is the'suction-pipe;
n 11 is the^discharge orlift-pipe;
G is a small hand-pump for primingr the main pump in starting up;
H is :twelve-chamber attached to the lower end of the suctionpipeE and I I is the supporting frame of the pump.
The buckets c c ot' the pump' are arranged in a manner similar to the buckets f a turbine waterwheel, as seen in iig. l, sothat the buckets have a wedging action. ou the water-iu addition to the ceutrifugal action. The buckets c are made wider on their outer ends, as shown in tig. 3, and this gives greater eicienoy, and more water is delivered by the same power with such modification of buckets. f
To equalize the discharge from the wheel or pump so that it is balanced, and the wear on the bearings is not all on one side as ordinarily, I divide the discharge F, fig. 1, into two parte, ff', by apartitiou, c @,and this causes the pump t deliver water equally from .its opposite sides, while but one main discharge, F, `is used, and by this means the wheel is so well balaneed that all side strain and wearare obviated, and
lthe pump will run a long time without getting out of order, and `the loss caused by the avoided.
The end ofthe casing, where it approaches the pump from the discharge F, terminates in a sharp point or edge, and the end ot'..thcvpartition @where it approaches the wheel or pump, also terminates with a sharp edge, an d by these ineans all eel-grass, doc., that `enters the pump is cut upjso that it cannot choke of power by increased friction, parts wearing out of. place, 'is' also the pump; and these terminations of F and o also act as butmentmto prevent the wheel fromcarrying I the water around .with itin the shell.
. lThe inner ends of the buckets a a are also 'made sharp for the same purpose.
The lower end of the suction-pipe E terminates with a chamber, Haud this chamberis provided-with al double set pf valves, h t', iig. 2.
A sfmall hand-pump, G, with a solidpiston, y, is attached to one side of the chamber, and the lower endet' this pump communicates with, said chamber H by a passage, n, 'and a small curved lever, lo, is suspended inthis passage by a pivot, near its center.
When the main pump A is to be at nest for some time during cold weather, the piston g of the handpump is depressed, sofas to act on the short oi' the lever k and cause the long arm of the lcverto raise one of theupper valves, Ih, so that the water inpump' A escapes through the said valve h and through the handpump G, the piston y being forced down so low that the escaping water passes above it and out through the top ofthe pump G.
As the apparatus is. placed in the water sothat the water-level is above the top of thepump G, all the water-'in the main pump above thcwater-level is allowed to escape, and by this` means the pump is prevented from freezing fast; and when the pump is to be started the handwpump is used to refill the pump A, an upward movement of 'the piston g, drawing water through the lower valves i, and a downward movement of said pistonA forcing this water through the upper valves h into-the chamber H,.and thence into the pump A.
TheV escape or tripping-lever` is can beV dispensed with, and a waste-cock be placedin `thevshcll O, for emptying ther pump.
To allow the airfto escape from the upper part of the shell O, when the pump is 'being filled for starting, the upper part ofthe shell is connected with the discharge-pipe F by a small pipe, m, and this also.
allows the pump tobe emptied more readily.
The wheel or puinpA a, g.3, is iiixed on the shaft solidity of bearings is obtained. The outer endof the c hub c is provided with a stating-belgi. f
The casing 0 is formed with an Vopening in its rear side, that is large enough -to allow the pump Ato be removed at anytime, and this opening'is closed by the concave disk or plate G' c', which is bolted tothe casing in such manuel' thais the wheel if; i'm'ci'd mld the wimie. interim' of the pump expsed or mad zmlessible in n. 'e'w minutes, without disturbing the pipes, Shelli, m' fixtures.
