- The present invention relatesto those devices for lighting gas lamps from a distance,- 1n whlch the gas cock "is openedandclosedby means of an electromagnet, the circuit" of which is closed as theresult of memporary rise in pressure in"v the ,gas main. Known devices of thiskind are unsuitable for practicable purposes because,'owingto the gradual rise andfall of gas pressure,

One example of theapparatus according to the present invention is diagrammatically represented in the drawing, said apparatus being shown in its essential parts and in various positions of operation.
Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 represent the apparatus in side elevation respectively in the normal position, the position of freeing the contact lever by the rising diaphragm, the position of closing circuit through the mag net which actuates the gas-cock, and the position of automatically opening such circuit again.

Consequently the diaphragm 0 rises, the contact pin 9 approaches theplate p and the bent member '2) allows a free path for the contact lever s (of Fig. 2). When the I gas pressure has risento such an extent that the two contact pieces 29, q touch one another, the circuit of the electromagnet is immediately closed, and by means of the latter the actuating lever h (of Fig. 3) is attracted downwardly with simultaneous rotation of the gas cook. When the lever it moves downward its downwardly bent end it strikes against the rear' end of the contact lever t and consequently, as will be understood from Fig. 3, opens i the circuit of the electromagnet. The contact lever t tends, in virtue of its own friction, to remain in the slanting position, so that at this place the circuit is held open during the downward movement of the membrane, which movement starts only gradually. Any subsequent undesired contacts made by contact pieces 39 g are thus altogether without effect.

In apparatus for lighting gas lamps from a distance, the combination of an electric circuit with a valve for the gas, pair of normally separated contact pieces, means comprising a diaphragm for closing said contact pieces on a temporaryrise in gas pressure, and electromagnetic means, normally'a'ctu'ated by the closing of said con-tact pieces, for opening or elosin'gsaid valve, of a-fi-X'edconta ct piece and a rockinglever in series 1 with said contact pieces; and means oper'atively connected to said diaphragm for drawing: said lever and contact piece into contact on the diaphragm returning to its 1 normalp'osition, said electromagnetic means after actuationholding said lever away from said contact piece.
