UNITED STATES PATENT oFFroE.
BENNO voM EIGEN, OF NEXVARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO AUGUST GOERTZ & 00., A CORPORATION OF NEXV JERSEY.
SAFETY-CATCH FOR BAGwFRAMES.
Application filed. December 26, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BEN-No VOM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Catches for liag-l rames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of this specification.
This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in safety-catches for bagl'rames; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel means in the form of a safety-holding catch for use with the separable members of the usual lock or bag-fastener employed with the frame-sections of bag-frames of the several kinds, and especially with chate-laine bags. I
The invention has for its principal object to provide in connection with the two members of a bag-fastener of the general construction herein set forth, a novel and simply constructed, as well as a readily manipulated locking or holding device, which is pivotally connected with one of the said fastener-members, and is adapted to positively retain the two members of the bagfastener in their locked engagement, until the said locking or holding device is manipulated and is released by the operator from its engagement with the other member of the bag-fastener- Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly underst00d from the following de tailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel safety-catch for bag-frames hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1914.
Serial No. 807,832.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a bagframe and its closing catch or bag-fastener provided with a safety retaining or locking means, all made according to and embodyin the principles of the present invention. 1 2 is a top-edge view of the central portions of the bag-frame-sections, the closing catch or bag-fastener thereof, and the safetydock or catch employed with said fastener, the said parts being represented in their closed relation, and the said view being made on a considerably enlarged scale. Fig. 8 is an elevation of the parts represented in said F 2, looking in the direction of the arrow 00 in said Fig. 2; and Fig. l is a similar view of the same parts, but the safety catch or look being shown in its diseng ged relation with the members of the ha -astener. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the device, said section being taken on line in said Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow y; and Fig. .6 is a similar sectional representation of the device, said section being taken on line 6-6 in said F g. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the lockpost used with one of the members of the main bag-fastener, the post being shown detached from said member; Fig. 8 is an elevation of said post, looking in the direction of the arrow .2 in said F ig. 7'; and Fig. 9 is another elevation of the post, looking in the direction of the arrow u in said Fig. 7.
Similar characters of referenceare employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-characters l and 2 indicate the two hinged frame-sections of any usual construction of bag-frame, and the reference- characters 3 and 4 indicate the two members of a suitable bag-fastener or closing catch adapted to be suitably secured upon the upper central portions of the respective bagframe- scctions 1 and 2. The member 3 in this case is substantially of oval or elliptical marginal configuration, having a correspondingly formed opening 5, and lower straight marginal ed e-portion (3 which rests upon the upper ace of the frame-section 1, and is permanently secured to said frame-section, preferably, by
means of rivetlugs 7 which extend downwardly from said edgeportion 5 and are passed through suitable holes in the said. trainee-action 1 and then riveted over or upset upon the lower face-portion of the said frame-section.
Suitably secured upon the upper central face-portion of the trams-section 2, by means of its rivet-lugs 8, or in any other suitable manner, is the member or shankplate 1, said shank-plate being suitably provided with a locking or retaining post, as 9, which has a knobshaped end, 10, or other suitably formed enlargement, and projects laterally from said shank-plate 8 in a direction tow rd the said member 3, so as to enter the opening 5 of said member, when the two fran'ie-sections 1 and are brought into their closed relation. One means of securing said post 9 to the shanlcplate 8 is by means of a rivet lug 11, in the manner shown in 5 and 8 of the drawings. the said post being made with a flat surfaceportion 19, and oil-set 13, forming an engaging lip which is adapted to be sprung intd separable holding engagement with the edge-portion 1 1 of the member 3, in the manner represented in Figs. 1, 41, and G of the drawings. When the said post is in its position relative to the frame-section 2 then the said fiat part 12 and the elf-set 13 are located upon the under part of the said post. Upon its opposite and upper part the said post is made with another flat surfacepprtion 15 and an oft-set 1G, also forming an engaging lip. As shown in said Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, the fiat part 15 is narrower than the flat part 12, so that the two retaining lips 16 and 13 are di'lierently spaced with relation to each other, as clearly shown and for the purposes hereinafter more fully specified.
The previously mentioned member 3 is provided at one of its ends, as at 17, with a rearwardly extending piv0t-pin 18, upon Which is pivotally mounted a suitably formed looking or retaining lever, as 19, said lever being provided with a knob or post 20 serving as a fingerpiece for the proper manipulation of said lever, and for moving its lower marginal edge-portion 21 into orout of its looking or retaining engagement with the retaining lip 16 of the post 9, when the two frame- sections 1 and 2 are in their closed relation, will be clearly evident from an inspection of the seve al figures of the drawings. That the end-portion of the lever 19 which is provided with the knob or fingerpiece 20, when in its closed relation with the two members of the bag-frame fastener proper and with the locking or retaining post 9 thereof, may be held in such closed relation against accidental d'splacement, the said lever is provided upon that side directly opposite the said knob or post :50 with. a suitable projection or protuberas indicated in dotted outline in 9 of the drawings, which springs into engagement with a proper recess or :23 in the other end-portion 24C of held in its closed position by the relation of several parts of the complete safetycatch. By raising the lever or arm 19 and pressing upon the knob 10 upwardly, the two far . ierqnembers 3 and 4 are readily brought into their separated relation, and the bag-frame section may be moved into their open relation, as will be clearly understood.
The herein-above described device is very simple in its construction and in its operation, and is neat in its appearance.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the clains which are ppended to the said specification. llence, i do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
