BOXING GLOVE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 21, 1912.

i ""Y x I v [NVE/VTOR Q2 8/44 BENJAMIN F. SI-IIBE, OF BALA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOXING-GLOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 11, 1914 Application filed June 21, 1912. Serial No. 704,978.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. SHIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bala, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxing-Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxing gloves.
The object of my invention is to produce a boxing glove adapted to gradually absorb the force of a blow, as well as to cushion the hand to prevent contusions and lacerations.
A further object thereof is to produce a glove of said character and qualities of much lighter weight than is practicable from the materials and construction heretofore employed.
Another object thereof is to produce a boxing glove in which the padding material and element employed is of a fibrous nature that will promptly return after compression to its normal shape and will not pack and wad and form an irregular structure, and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient article of said class than has heretofore been accomplished.
To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boxing glove of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal perspective View of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the palm portion of the padded structure of a boxing glove and 2 the back portion, of con ventional design.
3 indicates the wrist portion, which may be laced upon the hand by the eyelets 4: and cord 5 adjacent to the edges of the longitudinal slit 6.
In the construction of a boxing glove designed to neutralize the shock and force of a blow, it is not only desirable that it shall be padded or cushioned to soften the surface of the clenched hands, but that the material shall be light in weight, shall not wad and pack into irregular bunches and shall when compressed under the force and impact of a blow gradually yield and absorb the force and thereafter react into its normal shape and position. I have found that a fibrous material known as kapok possesses such qualities of resiliency, and I employ that material, partially compacted to form the cushion 7 of my glove, whereby is attained a result not heretofore accomplished in gloves of this character.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A boxing glove comprising a palm portion and a back portion, and a cushion of kapok within same.
2. A boxing glove comprising a palm portion and a backportion, and a cushion of partially compressed resilient kapok secured upon said back portion.
