LOUIS H. BECKER, OF SEYMOUR, INDIANA.
FIRELESS HOVER.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, Louis H. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seymour, in the county of Jackson and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Fireless Hovers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brooders and more particularly to a specially constructed flreless hover.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character articularly adapted for use in poultry yarc s where motherless chickens or other fowls are hatched by means of an incubator, as the device is constructed in such a novel and pe` culiar manner as to provide warmth and a cover for all motherless chickens without the use of fire for such warming purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knock-down hover capable of being quickly taken apart for cleaning purposes and again reassembled without in any way affecting the utility thereof, and to further provide a device which is not only durable and simple in construction but reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon Vthe market at a minimum cost.
The above and additional objects are accom Y lished by such means as are illustrated in lieir preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specication and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the housing showing the door thereof partly open. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the supporting ring and its accessories, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary View. y
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral l designates the outer wall or body portion of my device, which is preferably circular and provided with a plurality of screened open- Specication of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 11, 1914:. pplcation filed January 2, 1913.
Serial No. 739,731.
A cover l preferably cone-shaped and having an air vent e', is provided for the purpose of protecting the interior of the hover, and has formed integral therewith a flange 5 of substantially the same size and shape as the body portion l so as to fit thereupon. Before placing the cover l upon the bod portion l, a sheet of woolen or other soft material 6 is interposed therebetween to pre-v vent the entrance of cold air and dampness into the interior of the hover. The outer `edge of this sheet is slit as at 7 to form tongues 8 which depend upon all sides of the hover to materially add to the appearance of the device and to offer a greater amount of resistance against the dislodgment of said sheet, as well as to present a soft outer surface to the wall.
Upon the interior of the wall and near the top thereof is securedl a plurality of `brackets 9 adapted to support a. ring 10,
hen, thus it will be seen that chickens within the hover are as thoroughly and fully protected from the elements as though beneath their mother. An opening 14 is formed upon one side of the body portionto permit access to the interior of the hover, which opening may be closed when desired through the medium of a door l5 slidably mounted within guides 1G upon the outer face of the device.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a device constructed in accordance with my invention is capable of housing and protecting small chickens against rain, cold and other injurious weather conditions; that new strips may be substituted as desired without destroying or aifecting the efficiency vkof the device; and that the whole device may be taken apart and re-assembled at will or as occasion demands.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily comprehended.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is `l. 'A device of the character described including avbody portion, a removable cover therefor, a. sheet of soft material interposed between said cover and said body, the said cover serving as a securing means therefor, a plurality of tongues arranged to loosely depend exteriorly of the said body, the said tongues being formed by slitting the said material, the said tongues forming a cover for openings of the said body, a ring within said body, al plurality of uniformly spaced apart transversely extending rods carried by said ring, and a slit strip of soft material carriedby each of said rods, said slit port-ionv of the said strip adapted to depend between the said rods to a point adjacent the Hoor of the hover, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the character described including a body portion, a removable cover therefor, soft material interposed between said cover and said body portion, a plurality of tongues arranged to loosely depend eX- teriorly of the said body, the said tongues being formed by slitting the said material, certain of the tongues forming a cover for openings of the said body, a ring within said body, a plurality of rods carried by said ring, and a slit strip of material carried by each rod, the said slit port-ion of each strip adapted to depend between the said rods to a point adjacent the floor of the hover, as and for the purpose set forth.
3.` A device of the character described including a body portion having a plurality of screened openings formed therein, a remov- Vable cover having'an opening formed therein, a sheet of soft material interposed between said cover and said body portion, the cover serving as a securing means therefor, a plurality of tongues arranged to looselv depend exteriorly of the said body, the said tongues being formed by slitting the said material, a door mounted for sliding movement upon the outerface ofthe said body portion adjacent one of the said body openings, the said door adapted to open and close communication between the interior and eX- terior o`f the said body, the said door and the other screened openings being normally covered by certain of the depending tongues, a ring within said body a plurality of uniformly spaced apart transversely extending rodscarried'by said ring, and a slit strip of soft material carried by each of said rods, the said slit portion of the said strip adapted to depend between the said rods to a point adjacent the floor of the hover, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A device of the character described comprising a substantially cylindrical body portion having a plurality of screened openings formed therein, a removable cover having an opening formed therein, a` sheet of soft material interposed between the said cover and said body portion, the coverserving as a securing means therefor, the said material adapted to overlap the edges of the 'said body portion andV depend exteriorly thereof, a plurality of tongues arranged to loosely depend exteriorlyV of the said body, the said tongues being formed by slitting the extended portion of the material, a door mounted for sliding movement upon -the outer face of the said body portion adjacent one of the said body openings, the said door adapted to open and close communication betweenv the interior and exterior of the said body, thesaid door and the other ofthe said openings Abeing normally closed by certain of the said tongues depending thereover, a ringY carried by and within the said body portion near the top thereof, a plurality of rigidly supported brackets upon which the said ring is supported, a plurality ofV uniformly spaced apart transverselyextending rods carried by the said ring, and a stripof soft material carried by each of the said rods, each strip being slit at intervals throughout its entire length to provide depending portions which are suspended from the said rods and extend to a point adjacent the base of the hover, as and for the purpose set` forth.
