SHIPPING-PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July '7, 1914;.
Application filed January 22, 1913. Serial No. 743,558.
shipping-packages, and especially to packages for shipping household brooms; and it has for its object the provision of a package that is reasonable in cost, eflicient in preserving its contents, and simple in structure.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 1s a plan view of my improved package; Fig. 2, an end view; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the box or package illustrating the manner of folding and securing three of the end flaps or extensions. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the package with all the end flaps folded,
and before the sealing tapes are applied and Fig. 4:, a plan view of the blank employed.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts in the several views.
As shown in the drawings, my improved package is constructed of corrugated paper board and is constructed from a blank, as
shown in Fig. l, having a central longitu dinal panel '1, contiguous longitudinal narrower panels 2, separated from the long margins of panel 1 by creases 3, and other panels 4, extending longitudinally of the long free margins of panels 2 and separated therefrom by creases 5.
The central panel 1 .is provided with flaps or extensions 6 in its short margins and separated therefrom by creases 7 said extensions bein in width substantially onehalf of the wldth of either panel 2. Panels 2 are also provided with extensions 8 on their short margins and separated from the panels by means of creases 9, and-panels 4 are also nrovided with flaps or extensions 10 on their end margins, separated by creases 11. Extensions 10 are in width substantially one-half the width of either panel 2,
- and extensions 8 are substantially the same width as extensions 6 and 10.
In forming the package, the side panels 2 are folded on creases 3-, and raised to the vertical position shown in Fig. 3; then the end flaps 8 are folded inward on creases 9 and the wide end flaps 6 of the base panel 1 are folded in on creases 7, so that the end of the box or package presents. the appearance shown in Fig. 3. Staples 12 are next applied to the flaps 6 and 8, as shownin Fig. 3, thus securing them together; and, since the wide flap 6 of the base panel extends entirely across the flaps 8, the latter and the sides of the box are supported and braced firmly. The box thus formed presents the appearance indicated in Fig. 3 and is ready to receive a dozen brooms, which are accordingly placed therein. The next operation consists in folding the top panels 4 inward, and their flaps 10, are folded down over the flaps 8 of the side panels, as shown in Fig. 3 The joints thus formed are then closed by applying a short strip of adhesive tape 13 across the end of the box and a short distance on the sides of the same, as shown in Fig. 4; and a longer strip 1 is applied around the box, longitudinally, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This finishes the package ready for shipment, and the same is thus dustand moisture-proof so that the brooms are fully protected in this and other respects.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A broom package comprising an elongated box-like form having. its ends formed of opposite side flaps folded inward, the bottom flap folded over and upon said side flaps, staples securing the three flaps permanently together, and top flaps folding down over the said side flaps, and sealing tapes applied across the end of the package, as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. a HEZEKIAH THOMPSON.
