To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD L. O. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Nliddlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ribbon mecha-' nism for typewriting machines, and with regard to the more specific features thereof, to means for mounting the ribbon.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a device of the above character which will be practical in construction and efiicient in operation.
Another object is to provide a device of the above character which will be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
A further object is to provide an improved ribbon mounting which will permit the ready attaching and detaching of the ribbon therefrom.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown one of many possible embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the manner in which the ends of the ribbon are attached to the core and grip, the body part of the ribbon being unwound from both; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ribbon core as manufactured; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the end of the ribbon attached thereto; Fig. 4: is a per-' spective view of the ribbon grip; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the ribbon reel and grip with the end of the-ribbon being inserted therein. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the ribbon reel.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to these drawings in detail, 1
shown at the right; of Fig. l.
and 2 represent a pair of right and left hand ribbon spools or reels respectively having lower heads or flanges 3 for supporting and guiding a ribbon 4: as it is Wound in ribbon cups 5 which, in the embodiment shown, are placed at opposite sides of the machine to feed the ribbon past a printing point 6 under the driving action of any suitable mechanism, not'herein shown. These ribbon jecting sharp'pointed teeth 10 and a plurality of inwardly projecting elements or lugs 11. The teeth are adapted to engage and pierce one end of the ribbon and be bent downwardly, thereby firmly clamping the ribbon thereto, while the lugs 11 are adapted to engage one of the slots 7 when slipped over either ribbon reel and lock the parts in operative relation whereby they all rotate: together to wind the ribbon.
The ribbon grip 9 comprises a strip of resilient material, preferably thin sheet metal bent into the form of a cylinder but having a space 12 between its ends Fig. 4:. One endof this strip is provided with a plurality of pointed projections or teeth 13 adapted to engage the free end of the ribbon, as shown in Fig. 5. Slightly to one side of a point diametrically opposite the teeth '13 is provided a longitudinal element or rib 14 adapted to snap into engagement with one of the slots 7 in the ribbon reel when the grip is rotated'to lo'ck'the same'in, position against further rotation asjin the position Along the upper edge of the ribbon grip'is an" inwardly bent ear 15 to facilitate the rotation of the grip within-the hub or permit an easy removal therefrom when desired by pressing against the underside of the ear 15. It is thus seen thatthe end of the ribbon, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig.
5, may be inserted through one of the slots 7 in the reel and between the ends of the grip forming the opening 12 registering therewith, and upon rotating the grip by grasping the ear 15 the teeth 13 will pierce the ribbon and carry it around therewith into the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the grip co-acts with the reel to firmly clamp the end of the ribbon thereto.
The operation and manner of use of this device is substantially as follows: WVhen it is desired to place a new ribbon upon a typewriting machine the core 8 on which the ribbon is wound when purchased is slipped over either of the ribbon reels 1 or 2 allowing the lugs 11 toco-act with one of the slots 7 The free end of the ribbon is then passed through openings 16 in the ribbon cups 5 and the necessary guides and tension members, not shown, past the printing point to the opposite reel, where it is inserted in a similar slot and then through one of the slots 7 in the grip 9 and the grip turned until the flange 14: springs into the slot 7 at the opposite side of the reel 1. In this position the ribbon will be firmly clamped in position and the grip locked against further rotation. If desired, the ribbon core may be utilized for fastening the free end of the wound up ribbon, securing it as in Fig. 3 instead of the grip as at the right of Fig. 1 although the present construction is believed to be more advantageous.
It is thus seen that this invention provides for a simple and practical device accomplishing, among others, the objects and advantages above stated, upon which the ribbon may be wound and secured upon the ribbon reel, as well as a co-acting device for securing the free end of the ribbon to the opposite reel to feed the same past the printing point. The pair of ribbon attaching devices, in the present embodiment the core and grip, are interchangeable and of a size and form adapted to fit one within and the other without either reel or spool.
The specific form of the ribbon core herein shown and described is not my invention but forms part of the subject matter of the application of J. A. Ronchetti, filed Apr. 23, 1910, Serial No. 557,127.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V
1. In ribbon mechanism, in combination, a ribbon, a rotatable hollow spindle, and a ribbon grip within said spindle to which one end of the ribbon is adapted to be secured and hold it against the inner wallofv said spindle.
2. In ribbon mechanism, incombination, a ribbon, a rotatable hollow support having a slot therein, a ribbon grip adapted to fit within said support and be turned into gripping position, and means adapted to engage said slot to hold the grip against rotation.
3. In ribbon mechanism, in combination, a ribbon, a rotatable hollow support having a slot therein, a ribbon grip adapted to fit within said support, and a rib on said grip adapted to engage said slot to lock the grip in position after the ribbon has been secured thereto.
4:. In ribbon mechanism, in combination, a ribbon, a rotatable hollow support having slots therein, and a ribbon grip adapted to fit within said support having means adapted to engage one of said slots to lock the grip against rotation after the ribbon has been inserted in another of said slots and secured by said grip.
5. In ribbon mechanism, in combination, a ribbon, a rotatable hollow support having slots therein, a ribbon grip having a slot drical ribbon grip adapted to fit within said support, said ribbon grip comprising a strip of resilient material bent into a cylindrical form and having a space between the ends thereof adapted to register with one of said slots, and means whereby said ribbon may befirmly clamped to said. grip when said slots are moved out of reg-' istry. a
7. In ribbon mechanism, in combination,
a ribbon, a rotatable hollow support, said I support having oppositely disposed slots, a ribbon grip co-acting with said support comprising a strip of resilient material bent into the form of a cylinder having: a space between its ends adapted to register with oneof theslots in said support whereby the ribbon may be inserted therein, a rib formed near one end of said grip, and teeth on the opposite end .adapted to piece the ribbon when the grip is rotated.
8. In ribbon mechanism, in combination, a ribbon, a rotatable hollow support, having oppositely disposed slots, a ribbon grip co-acting with said support comprising a strip of resilient materialbent into the form of a cylinder having a space beof the slots in said support whereby the ribbon may be inserted therein, means on said grip adapted to co-act with another of said slots to lock the same against rotation, and means adapted to co-act with said support and firmly hold the end of the ribbon when said grip is rotated.
9. In ribbon mechanism, in combination, a ribbon, a hollow support, having an open end, a grip adapted to co-act with the inside of said support and to hold one end of said ribbon, the means adapted to be pressed to cause removal of said grip from said support through said open end.
10. In ribbon mechanism, in combination, a ribbon, a hollow support having an open end, a grip adapted to co-act with the inside of said support to hold one end of said ribbon, and a projecting lug on said grip whereby the same may be grasped to permit ready removal thereof through said open end.
11. An article of manufacture of the 'character described comprising a strip of resilient material bent into substantially the form of a cylinder and having a space between its ends, teeth provided at one end of said strip and a projection on its outer cylindrical face intermediate its ends.
12. An article of manufacture of the character described comprising a strip of resilient material bent into substantially the form of a cylinder, an outwardly projecting rib intermediate its ends, one end being provided with projecting points adapted to pierce the end of a ribbon, said strip having an inwardly bent portion along one edge thereof.
13. An attaching device for attaching a ribbon to a spool having a slotted hollow hub, consisting of an internal hub engaging member having means for attaching the ribbon thereto, and projecting means adapted to coact with the spool to prevent relative rotation of the attaching device and the hub.
