OSCAR 1). HAPGOOD, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, T0 GrOOIDELL-PRATT COMPANY, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
CHUCK.
Application filed March 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, OSCAR D. HAreooD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greenfield, county of Franklin, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chucks.
The object of my invention is to provide a chuck having a plurality of jaws with means for applying pressure to the jaws at a right angle tothe longitudinal axes of the jaws so that there is no binding action of the jaws on the walls of the guideways thereof, so that the entire gripping power is applied to the jaws and no part of the power is taken up by friction.
A further object is to provide means for securing the inner endsof the jaws to an actuating member so as to prevent any axial movement of the jaws.
A further object is to provide means for securing in place an actuating sleeve so that it is free to rotate without binding.
My invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, I have illustrated a form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section with the jaws in retracted position; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section showing the jaws in extended position; Fig. 3 is'an elevation with the actuating sleeve removed; Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view; Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of the jaws; and, Fig. 6 is a perspective of a follower used in actuating the aws.
1 Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a shank having an enlarged body 2 to leave an upper shoulder 3. The body 1 is provided further with a tapering head 4 at its lower end having a central bore 5 to receive the end of a tool. The head 4: is enlarged slightly over the diameter of the body 2 and is provided with a plurality of guldeways 6 converging to its center.
Disposed on the body portion 2 of the shank 1 is an actuating sleeve 7 provided with an upper flange 8 disposed on the shoulder 3 and held in position to be freely rotated, by means of a washer 9 disposed in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
Serial No. 87,398.
screw threaded engagement with the shank 1 at a point slightly above the body 2. The shank 1 is provided with a shoulder 10 to receive the washer 9 so that no binding effect 1s had by the washer forming a bearing for the upper edge of the sleeve 7 The sleeve 7 is provided with interior screw threads 11 disposed to engage the exterior screw thread 12 of a follower 13 disposed on the body 2. The follower 13 is provided at its lower end with a flange 14 disposed and extending at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the shank 1 which angle is less than a right angle. In the movement of the follower on the body 2 the flange 14: works in a chamber 15 formed by cutting away the wall of the sleeve 7. Formed in the flange 141 of the follower 13 is a plurality of slots 16, preferably dovetailed in cross section, but of any suitable angular cross section.
Slidably disposed in the converging guideways 6 are jaws 17 having their upper ends 18 dove-tailed to coincide with the cross section of the slots 16, so that they will slide from one end to the other of the slots as the follower is actuated longitudinally of the body 2, but so connected that there will be no axial movement of the jaws 17 in their guideways. The slots 16 being at less than right angles to the longitudinal axis of the shank and at right angles to the longitudinal axes of the jaws 17, when the follower 13 is actuated longitudinally of the body 2 a straight pull parallel with the axes of the jaws 17 is exerted so that all the power ap plied is applied to the opening or closing of the jaws and'none of the power is lostby means of friction of the j aws in the guideways or the connections between the upper ends of the jaws and the follower. As a consequence of' this construction a smooth working instrument is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is:
1. A chuck comprising the combination of a shank having a head provided with a plurality of converging guideways, a plurality of jaws disposed in the guideways, means for applying power to the jaws parallel to their axes and means for rotatably securing the actuating means on the shank.
2. A chuck comprising the combination of a shank having a head provided with a plurality of converging guideways, a plurality of jaws disposed in the guideways, means for applying power to the jaws parallel to their axes, and adjustable means for rotatably securing the actuating means on the shank.
3. A chuck comprising the combination of a shankhaving a head provided with a plurality of converging guideways and two annular shoulders formed on the shank, a plurality of jaws disposed in the guideways, means for applying power to the jaws parallel to their axes, a screw-threaded securing member disposed on the shank adjacent the actuatingmeans, said actuating means being provided with a flange disposed on one of said shoulders and the securing member being disposed on the other of said shoulders.
4. A chuck comprising the combination of a shank having a head provided with a plurality of converging jaw guideways and a central bore, a follower disposed on the head and provided with a plurality of slots arranged at less that a right angle to the shank, means for actuating the follower longitudinally of the shank and a plurality of jaws slidably disposed in the guideways'and having their upper ends disposed in the slots.

6. A chuck comprising the combination of ashank having a headprovided with a plurality of converging jaw guideways and a central bore, a follower disposed .on the head vand provided with a flange having a plurality of slots arranged at less than a right angle to the shank, means for actuat- Copies of thiscpatent may be obtained for 5. A chuck comprising the combination ing thefollower longitudinally of the shank and a plurality of jaws slidably disposed in the guideways and having their upper ends disposed in the slots.
7. A chuck comprising the combination of a shank having a central bore and a plurality of jaw guideways converging thereon, jaws slidably disposed in the guideways and means for applying pressure on the jaws parallel to the axes of the jaws.
' 8. A chuck comprising the combination of a shank, a plurality of jaws slidably sup ported on the shank, an actuating means on the shank for moving the jaws and means connecting the jaws and the actuating means for applying pressureto the jaws parallel to their axes and to prevent rocking the same axially.
' 9. A chuck comprising the combination of a shank having an enlarged body and a head having a central bore and a plurality of guideways converging thereon,'an exteriorly screw-threaded follower disposed on the body of the shank and provided with a flange having slots therein at right anglesto the axes of the guideways, an interiorly screw-threaded sleeve disposed on the body of the shank having an enlarged chamber to receive the flange of the follower and having a flange to work on the upper edgeof the body, a washer disposed in screw threaded engagement with the shank above the sleeve, and a plurality of jaws slidably disposed in the guideways and having their upper ends in slidable engagement with the flange on the follower.
10. 'A chuck comprising the combination of a shank having a central bore and a plurality ofjaw guideways converging thereon,
