PONCHO.
Application led April 21, 195.
To all whom t muy concern:
lle it known-that l, EDWARD W. SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Suffolk and State of lilassaehusetts, have invented an Improvement in Ponchos, of which the follouf'ing is a specification.y
rThis invention relates to ponches adapted to be used as capes, sleeping bags, blankets, covers for blankets and equipment, and shelter-tents, and'has for its object the construction of an improved collar-flap which is attached to the sheet of Waterproof fabric adjacent a slot through Which the head passes. Collar-flaps have heretofore been made, but are objectionable for the reason that when extended about the neck of the wearer they assume a conical form of considerable altitude, rising prominently above the 0 l .neck opening, are unsupported at their outer edges, do not form a tight closure in front of the neck, and when laid flat on the Waterproof sheet are supported at the middle only, leaving the end-portions unsupported.
lipy improved form of collar-flap is of such formation that when extended about the neck of the wearer it nts snugly upon and about the neck and shoulders, forms a substantially tight closure at the front of i the neck, is supported at its outer edges,
and when laid flat on the Waterproof sheet is supported at its sides and also at the middle.
Figure l is a plan View of a poncho embodying this invention, the collar-flap being laid flat on the sheet. Fig. 2 is a fragits length at the middle.
inentary detail showing the collar-flap turned over, exposing the slot and the fastening-members on the sheet. Fig. 3 is an r enlarged sectional View of the collar-flap and sheet taken on the dotted line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. -l is a View of the sheet folded in readiness to slip onto the wearer, the collarflap being turned up. Fig. 5 is a front eleration of the poncho in position for Wear.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are views illustrating Various modes of using the poncho.
10 represents a large sheet of Waterproof fabric which may be composed of one or more pieces secured together. Ordinarily this sheet may be of any desired shape and dimensions, but for the purpose of using it as a sleeping blanket, one of its end-portions is extended, as at l2, thereby to increase Said sheet has Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ane'. l, i914.
Serial No. 22,926.
fastening-means arranged about its edges adapting it to be used for various purposes. rlhe fastening-means employed may consist of ball and socket fastening-members.
At or about the middle of the sheet, a slot l is formed, which is made long enough to enable the head to pass through the sheet. At one side of the slot the collar-flap is attached. The collar-flap consists of a bodyportion l5, having a straight edge4 16, which is stitched or otherwise secured to the sheet along one side of the slot and in parallel relation therewith, and two forwardly and inu'ardly extended portions 17 and 1S,
' which together With the body-portion are cut on their adjacent sides to produce an opening of circular formation. This collarlap is designed to be turned up, and then passed around the neck of the wearer and its forwardly and inwardly extended portions oyerlapped and securedV by suitable fastenings. A collar-flap of this formation fits snugly around the neck and about the shoulders of the wearer, and does not rise and pucker, and forms a tight closure at the front of the neck.
The collar-flap has numerous fasteningmeans as Will noW be described. At the middle of the flap there is a fastening-member 20, arranged for engagement With the fastening-member 2l, on the sheet, adjacent the slot, to attach the middle of the flap to the sheet when it .is extended over the slot. At the ends of the flap there are fastening- members 22 and 23 for engagement, respectively, with the fastening-members Q5 and 24, on the sheet, to admit of the flap being/also attached to the sheet at both of its ends. At Jthe extremity of the forwardly and inwardly extended portion 18, there are two fastening-members Q6 and 27 and at the extremity of the other for- Wardly and inwardly extended portion 17, there is a fastening-member 28, and when the fla-p is arranged about the neck of the wearer the fastening-member 27 may be brought into engagement with the fastening-member 21 on the sheet, and the fastening- members 26 and 28 may engage each other, thereby fastening the flap at the front of the neck to the sheet to form a tight closure and also fastening the two portions together. Also there are fastening- members 30, 31,' on the sheet, and When the flap is arranged about the neck of the wearer the lll) elongated slot, and a collar-flap attached to the sheet adjacent the slot, said collar-Hap consisting of a body-'portion and forwardly and inwardly extended portionsv arranged on one side of the body-portion, at the ends thereof, and also arranged to overlap one another at their extremities, the adjacent sides of all said portions being of circular formation, means for detachably securing said body-portion to the sheet at both ends, and means for securing the extremities of saidl forwardly and inwardly extended portions together.
2. The poncho 4herein described consisting of a sheet of waterproof fabric having an elongated slot, and a collar-flap attached to the sheet adjacent the slot, said c0llar-flap consisting of a body-portion and forwardly and inwardly extended portions arranged on one side of the body-portion, at the ends thereof, and also arranged to overlap one another, at their extremities, the adjacent sides of all said portions being of circular formation, and means for securing the extremity of one of said forwardly and inwardly extended portions to the sheet at the front of the slot, and means for securing Copies of this patent may be obtained forsaid forwardlyV and inwardly extended portionsv together at their extremities. o
3. The poncho herein described consisting of a sheet of waterproof fabrichaving an elongated slot, a collar-flap comprising a body-portion with forwardly and inwardly extended portions, the extremities of which are arranged to overlie one another, said flap being secured to the sheet adjacent the slot, and adaptedto liey fiat on the sheet and to extend over the slot, and fastening-means forr connecting the flap with the sheet at the middle and sides of the body-portion when lying flat thereon, and fastening-means for connecting the sides of the body-portion with the sheet when extended about the neck of the wearer, and
kfastening-means for connecting the end of one of the forwardly and inwardly extended portions with the middle connecting-means, and means for connecting the end of the other forwardly and inwardly extended portion with the aforesaid portion, thus securely holding the flap in both positions, and forming atight closure at the front of the neck.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of' two subscribing witnesses.
