DRIP-VALVE.
Application filed August 19, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drip-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in drip valves, and is designed especially for the purpose of providing a device through which liquids, as oil, may slowly but continuously pass to be used for various purposes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is comparatively inexpensive in cost of production, economical, but durable and ellicient in its operation and the performance of its functions.
The invention consists essentially in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts of the drip valve as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention, and one which has proven highly satisfactory in actual use.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the casing, showing the plug in full. Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view of the plug of thecock. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the plug as seen from the left in Fig. 1 and 2.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention ll employ a standard brass casing as 1 having the usual tapered bore 2 for the valve plug, and the proximal threaded end 3 or inlet and distal end or outlet 4. A recess 5 is provided in the front wall of the bore of the casing which communicates with the outlet or mouth 1 and extends vertically upward therefrom to near the top of the tapered bore.
The plug 6 of the cock or valve is tapered as usual to fit its bore 2 and it may be turned in its bore by the handle 7, to open or close communication through the valve or cook. At 8 the plug is bored horizontally and a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2d, 191%.
Serial No. 116,317.
well or hollow space 9 is centrally located in the plug beneath the opening or port 8, and the port 8 registers with the inlet opening 3 of the casing when the valve plug is turned to proper position as in Fig. 1.
The usual screw 10 and washer 11 are employed to secure the plug in its bore, and at 12 a groove is indicated in the periphery of the plug which extends half way around the plug from the opening or port 8 to a point diametrically opposite thereto where it opens into or communicates with the recess or groove 5 in the wall of the tapered bore of the casing when the plug is in open position. When the valve plug is closed it is turned through an arc of 1-5 as usual until ablank closes the inner ends of the inlet and outlet openings 3 and 4, with the port 8 against the blank face of the tapered bore.
In Fig. 1 the cock is open to permit passage therethrough of oil or other liquid, the oil passing from the inlet opening 3 into the well and port, which are first filled, and then passing upwardly through the groove 12 half around the plug, through the groove 5 and thence out through outlet 4.
During the passage of the oil, it will be noted that heavy or extraneous matters or sediment are provided for by the use of the well, for here the sediment is lodged, the heavier portions naturally gravitating into the well while the lighter matter passes up through the groove 12 and around the plug as described. he well may be cleaned out when necessary, and the plug replaced for further use. In this manner a continuous passage of oil is attained, through the drip cock and the oil drips from the outlet t for the purposes desired.
What I claimis:
The combination in a drip cock with its casing, and a plug having a chamber therein, said casing having a recess in its wall communicating with its outlet, and said plug having a port communicating with the chamber and adapted to register with the inlet of the casing and an external groove extending from said port adapted to communicate with the recess in the casing.
Tn testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHRISTOPHER J. SMITH.
