SAFETY-GUARD FOR SHAIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed September 4, 1914. Serial No. 860,134.
To all whom 'it may concern.' v
Be it known that I, PETER JnssRANG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of h/l'ilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of "Wisconsin, have invented new` and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards for Shapers7 of which the Vfollowing is a description, reference b-eing had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an adjustable guard for the cutter heads of shapers for cutting strips of wood such as molding and the like, such guard serving to prevent the operator moving his hand into contact with the knives of the cutter head and being readily adjustable vertically or horizontally to accommodate work of different thickness and cutter heads of different diameters.
With the above and yother objects in view the invention consists in the safety guard for Shapers as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in different views, Figure 1 is a front view of a safety guard for shapers eXemplifying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof; and Fig.r 4 is a transverse sectional view thereof on the plane of line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings 10 indicates the table of a wood working shaper and 11 the spindle or arbor passing vertically therethrough and vcarrying the cutter head 12 at its upper end, such cutter head having the usual shaper blades 18 with their cutting edges shaped to conform to the outline which it is desired to give to the edge of the work. A work guide 14 is clamped to the table 10 and has upstanding guide iianges on either side of a central opening 15 containing the cutter head. The shaper as thus described is of ordinary 'construction and the guard associated therewith for protecting the operator from engagement with the cutter head constitutes the present invention as will be now described.l
Bracket members 16 are secured to the rear of the upstanding flanges of the work guide 14 and have clamping bolts 17 projecting upwardly therefrom while slotted brackets 18 are adjustably secured to the bracket members 16 by means of said clampingbolts 17 passing through slots 19 on the horizontal portions thereof so that the said brackets 18 may slide forwardly or rearwardly over the flanges of the work guide. As the slots 19 extend to the end of the brackets 18 said brackets may be withdrawn entirely from the clamping bolts 17 when desired and be readily returned in place thereon again. An H shaped frame 20 has its upright members placed against the upstanding portions of brackets 18 and clamping bolts 21 on said upright members pass through the slots of these upstanding portions of brackets 18 to clamp the frame adjustably thereto, the frame being capable of being raised or lowered by the travel of the clamping bolts 21 inthe slots but being held rigidly in place when the clamping bolts are tightened. A guard member 22 with rounded ends is yieldably secured to the `cross piece of the frame 20 by having upstanding bolts 23 passing through somewhat larger openings in the said cross piece, there being a compound leaf spring 24 con nected to the guard member and the cross piece respectively for forcing the guard member downwardly and thumb nuts 25 are threaded on the upper ends of the bolts 23 to limit the downward movement of the guard member. ln order to prevent the thumb nuts 25 becoming loosened on the bolts 23 they are provided with swinging lock nuts in the form of wire loops 26 pivotally mounted on the cross piece and engaging one of the wings of each thumb nut, thus permitting of the upward movement of the thumb nuts when the guard member 22 is forced upwardly without disengaging the wire loops 26 from the wings of said thumbnuts.
In operation the guard member 22 is adjusted to stand away from the work guide 14 just far enough to escape the cutter blades of the cutter head by sliding the brackets 18 on the clamping bolts 17 and when this adjustment is accomplished said clamping bolts 17 are tightened and the guard member is then adjusted vertically to a position where its lower edge will normally lie just below the level of the upper edge of the work 27 when the latter rests on the work table. When the work resting on in their upstan the work table and against the work `guide 14: is pushed toward the cutter head it engages and lifts the guard member 22 against the action of its spring 24, the 4guard thus serving to steady the work in its travel between the cutter' and also serving to prevent the work being` thrown by its engagement with the rapidly rotating cutter, but the principal function of said guard member is to so shield the cutter, that the hands ofthe operator may not be brought in contact therewith. The guard may be quickly and readily adjusted vertically to ,accommodate work of various ,thickness and may also be quickly adjusted horizontally to adapt it for use with a different cutter head or lfor different adjustments ofthe blades of the :cutter head so that it will just escape them.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a wood working Shaper having a table with a work guide and a rotating cutter head, of bracket members secured to the rear of the work guide, brackets slidably mounted on the horizontal portions .of the bracket members, clamping bolts securing the horizontal portions of ,the bracket members and the brackets togetherand litting in slots to permit the horizontal adjustment of the brackets, said brackets being rovided with vertical slots cling portions, a frame bearing against the upstanding portions of the brackets, clamping bolts on the frame itting in the vertical slots of the brackets, and a spring pressed guard member yieldingly mounted on the frame and standing in -front of the cutter head'to prevent the hand of the operator coming in Contact with the cutter head.
2. The combination with a wood working shaper having a work table with a flanged work guide and a rotating cutter head, of bracket members secured to the rear of the flange of the work guide with horizontal portions extending rearwardly from said flange, brackets having horizontal slotted portions vbearing on the horizontal portions of the bracket members, clamping bolts on the horizontal portions of the bracket members ,engaging the brackets through said slots, said brackets having upstanding slotted portions, an Hshaped frame bearing against the yupstanding portions of the brackets, clamping bolts on the frame engaging the upstanding portions of the brackets ,through the slots thereof, a guard member, upwardly extending'bolts at the ends of the guard member passing through openings inthe cross piece of the frame, a compound leaf spring connecting the guard member with the cross piece .of the frame, thumb nuts threaded .on the ends of vthe bolts of the guard member and normally `bearing on -the cross piece kof the frame to limit the downward movement of the guard member, and swinging loops on the cross piece of the frame engaging the `wings of the thumb nuts for preventing their turning while permitting Vertical movement thereof.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
PETER JESSRANG.
