Be it known that I, GEORGE I'I. TARLETON, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt- Anchors, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the ac companying drawings, which formapart of the same.
My invention relates to bolt anchors to secure articles to a wall or other support which may be of stone, concrete, terra cotta, or any other material.
More particularly my invention comprises a bolt anchor having expansible members pivoted on a body member. I
My invention further includes a face plate or escutcheon, carried by the body member, which will cover the opening in the wall or other support and give a handsome effect to the work.
My invention further comprises a bolt anchor having pivoted expansible members and a bolt and nut, the parts being so formed that when once assembled they can be readily handled, packed and shipped, without becoming disconnected or running any danger of these different elements moving from their cooperating positions.
In the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of my invention and in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures: Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the bolt anchor the cooperating bolt being shown in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section similar to Fig. 1 showing the bolt anchor mounted within an opening in the support and expanded, the article to be supported being omitted for the purpose of clearer illustration; Fig. 3 is a plan view of my bolt anchor; Fig. 1 is a transverse vertical section substantially on the line 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a face view showing the face plate covering the ragged edges of the opening which is shown in dotted lines.
In the illustrative embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing 1 is my improved bolt anchor comprising a body member 2 to which are provided the rigid expansible members 3 and 4 by the pivot pins 5-5. The interior surfaces 6-6 of these pivoted members 3 and 4 flare slightly from the body member 2 toward the other end or toe 7. Within the flaring 'opening'16, so formed, I mount any suitable expansion means such as the conical nut 8 which cooperates with the bolt 9. Preferably, though not necessarily, the nut is substantially square in cross section to cooperate with the opening 16 of that contour. Of course, it is to be understood that any other suitable contour may be used, it being simply necessary to hold the nut from rotation andpermit its longitudinal movement to expand the pivoted expansible members 3 and 4: as shown in Fig. 2. I preferably provide each of these expansible members 3 and 4 with a heel 10 which will engage with the bolt and in that manner form a unitary structure which can be handled, shipped or stored readily without any of the parts becoming accidentally disconnected or disarranged from their operative position. In Fig. 2 the expansion is somewhat exaggerated.
The opening 11 in a wall, or other suitable support 12, is concealed preferably by the face plate or escutcheon 13 which is preferably, though not necessarily, carried by or formed integral with the body member 2. The use of this face plate 13 not only insures the bolt anchor, being located at the proper depth in the wall but also serves to hide the ragged edge 14 of the opening ll-and give a handsome efiect to the work. I may also provide thetoe of the expansible members 3' and 4: with lips 15, 15 to more readily engage with the support 12. Having thus described this invention in connection with several illustrative embodi- I ments thereof to the details of which I do, not desire to be limited except as defined by the scope of the appended claims, what is claimed as new and what is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the following claims:
1. In a bolt anchor the combination of an escutcheon plate to cover the hole, a body member carried by the escutcheon plate and adapted to fit into the hole in the wall or other support, expansible members pivoted to the body member and adapted to extend farther into the hole, and means to expand the expansible members, the escutcheon plate hiding the raw edges of the hole.
2. In a bolt anchor the combination of a body member, eXpansible members pivoted to the body member and having a heel to contact with the bolt to limit the outward throw of the pivoted expansible members, a nut, and a bolt to cooperate with the nut find with the heels of the expansible memers.
3. In a bolt anchor the combination of a face plate provided with a rigid body member, expansible members pivoted to the rigid body member and having a heel to contact with the bolt to limit the outward throw of the pivoted expansible members, a nut, and a bolt to cooperate with the nut and with the heels of the expansible mem- 15 bers.
