Description

Patented Feb. 8,1916.
nn-iran stains PATENT ernten y LOUIS H.' HANDELL, 0F AURORA, ILLINOIS. i
TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 19H5.
Application led May 29, 1915.V Serial No. 31,286.
T0 all lwhom t may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS II. I-IANDELL, a
citizen of the United States, and a residentV of the city of Aurora, county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tops, and has for its object an improved device of simple construction which will spin for a long time, and which is capable of emitting sound during the spinning.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangementsof parts hereinafter described and claimed.V
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a top plan view of a top embodying my invention, and Fig. 9., a vertical medial section of the same.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing comprises a top bodyB in the form of a hollow cone of substantially sixty-live degrees spinning upon the point thereof. The body 3 is pro-vided with an upwardly extending central integral stem l having a spinning socket 5 in its top adapted to receive the point of a nail 6 or other similar instrument. In spinning the top a string 7 is wound about the .upper portion ofstem 4E, above the top body 3, a nail 6 is inserted in socket 5 and the top held in upright position by means of said nail with the point of the body 3 resting upon the spinning surface. Then the string 7 is readily withdrawn from stem 4 imparting a high rotation thereto and to the top body, stem 4 rotating with reference to nail 6 to permit of this. Then the nail is removed and the top permitted to spin under the momentum thus imparted. I found that a top constructed as specified will spin for a. long time, and that the best results are obtained by the use of a conical body having an angle of substantially sixty-five degrees.
i Tubes 8 are extended through the walls or body 7, being open at their outer ends and tubes by the rapid rotation of the top body thus vibrating the reeds 9 to emitsound, which feature adds to the attractiveness of the top as a toy.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of theinvention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire toavail myself of such variations and modifications las come within the scope of the appended claims. A
Having ldescribed my invention what I claimv as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
. 1. A top in the form of a hollow cone spinning uponthe point thereof, said cone being provided with a central stem extending above it and having a yspinning socket in its top; and sound producing agencies on the periphery thereof, substantially as described.
v 2. A top in the form ofa hollow cone of substantially sixty-five degrees spinning upon the point thereof, said cone being provided with a central stem extending above it and having a spinning socket in its top; and sound producing agencies on the periphery thereof, substantially as described.
3. A top in the form of a hollow cone spinning upon the point thereof, said cone being provided with a central stem extending above it and having a spinning socket in its top; and tubes extending through the walls of said cone substantially tangentially thereto, said tubes being open at their outer ends-and provided with reeds at their inner ends, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS H. HANDELL.
Witnesses:
