To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD 'ILALLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple-Pullers, of

which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in staple pullers.

An object of the invention is to provide a staple puller which is particularly adapted for pulling staples from paper cases and in which means is provided for preventing clenched staples from tearing the paper case as it is being withdrawn.v

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective staple puller of this character, having certain details of structure and operation hereinafter more fully set forth. i

' Referring now to the drawings, 1 repre: sents an elongated rectangular shaped metal plate, having on each side Vertically disposed oppositely arranged ears 2 and 3, in which is mounted the pivot 4: of the staple pulling lever 5. The forward end ofthe metal plate 1 is provided with a tongue 6 of a width approximately that of the staple to be pulled and has a recess 7 into which extends the pulling claw 8 of the lever 5. This claw 8 being placed within the recess 7 and flush with the upper edge thereof, it will be seen that when the lever 5 is forced under the staple, the staple is forced over the end of the pulling claw 8. Arranged on each side of the tongue 6 and spaced some distance therefrom are the forwardly extending members 9 and 10 which extend outwardly in alinement with the forward end of the tongue. 6. The. space between the tongue 6 and the forwardly extending members 9 and 10 is of a. width substantially greater than the thickness of the metal of which the staple is made, so that the staple will pass between the same.

Patented Jan. 4:, 1916 turned upwardly and in order to prevent the clenchedends of the staples from pulling the paper outwardly with them, these members 9 and 10 extend over said clenched ends and hold the paper of the case downwardly and cause the staples to straighten as they are drawn upwardly by the claw 8. This pulling claw 8, as is readily seen, is forced upwardly after the tongue hasbeen forced under the staple by the downward movement of the lever or handle 5, and thus the staple is readily withdrawn from the box or case withoutinjury thereto.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A staple puller comprising a base, a

tongue carried by one end of the base and having a recess in its upper face, and a lever pivoted to-the base and having a forwardly extending claw within the recess.

2. A staple puller of the character de-v scribed comprising an elongated base, a tongue at oneend of the base and of a width less than that of the base and having a recess in its upper face, outwardly extending members carried by the base on each side of the tongue and spaced therefrom, and .a lever pivoted to the base in rear of the tongue, and having a'forwardly extend ing claw within the recess in the base.

3. A staple puller of the character described comprising a fiat base, a tongue carried by one end of the base, a lever pivoted to the base and having a forwardly extending claw above the tongue, and outwardly extending members carried by the base and extending parallel with the tongue and spaced therefrom.

A staple puller of the character described comprising an elongated base, a tongue carried by one end of the base and of a width less than that of the base and having a recess in its upper face, outwardly extending members carried by the end of the base on each side of the tongue and spaced therefrom, upwardly extending ears carried by the base in rear of the tongue, and a lever pivoted between the ears and having a forwardly extending claw within the recess in the tongue.
