Be it known that I, ALEX T. LORGREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paso Robles, in the countyof San Luis Obispo and State of California, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Anti-Rail- Spreadin Devices, of which the following is a specification. i
The present inventionrelates to improvements in anti-rail spreading devices.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a device for preventing the spreading of railway rails which shall be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easily applied and which will properly hold the rails at the desired gage.
It is also my purpose to provide an antirail spreader which shall remain a permanent fixture upon the rails and which shall comprise a pair of similar co-engaging members, each including an elongated body portion provided adjacent one of its ends with a rail engaging hook, its other end being extended laterally providing the said end with a head, the inner face of each of the heads being adapted to receive the opposite end of the body portion of the other member, a
central member passing through the body members for connecting the said members together, while longitudinally arranged securing elements are passed through the ends of the heads.
lVith the above and other objects in View, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through the rails of a track illustrating the application of my improvement, Fig. '2 is a central transverse sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the improvement, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the elements comprising the anti-rail spreader, showing the same separated.
In the drawings, RR designate the rails of a track and 1 my improved antispreader which is attached to the rails. The spreader 1 comprises a pair of similar companion members each constitutingan elongated body portion, indicated by the numeral 2, the said body, adjacent one of its ends being formed with an upwardly extending outwardly inclined lip 3 and the end of the body, adjacent the said lip 3 is formed with alongitudinally extending threaded orifice 4:. The portion of the body below the lip '3 is horizontally straight, as indicated by the numeral 5, and isadapted to serve as a rest for the base flanges of the rails when the device is attached to the rails. The opposite end, adjacent its horizontally straight rail receiving portion 6 is widened from what I will term its inner face, providing the same with a head 7, and the said head is formed upon its inner face with an angularly disposed inwardly extending lip 8, the said lip being received within the fishing space upon the outer side of each rail, the lip 3 engaging in the finishing space upon the inner face of the opposite rail. The outer side of the head, on a line with the straight horizontal rail receiving portion 6 is provided with a substantially rectangular depression 9, the same providing a pocket to receive the end of the companion section provided with the threaded orifice 1, and the numeral 10 designates an opening which is adapted to register with the said threaded orifice 4, when the companion sections are arranged side by side, and through which passes a locking or securing element, preferably in the nature of a headed screw 11. The upper edge of the body 2 of each of the members is preferably inclined upwar ly from the horizontally straight portions 6 to the rail engaging lip 3, and both of the members are centrally provided with alining transverse openings 12, and through these openings is passed a connecting member 13, thesaid pivot member having its shank pro vided with an opening 15 which receives a securing element, preferably in the nature of a cotter pin 15. v
The companion members 2, it will be noted, are connected both centrally and at their ends, and the screw members 11 are in the nature of adjusting elements so that the lips 3 and 8 will be tightly forced against the opposite sides of the rails, the openings 12 being of a sufficient size to permit of such adjustment without causing the binding of the member 13 against the opposite walls provided by the said openings 12. The members 2 are positioned by sliding the same longitudinally from opposite directions toward each other so that their ends provided with the openings 4 are properly received within the pockets 9 of the head 7 of elements are attached.
From the above descrlptlon, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the simplicity of the device; as well as the advantages thereof Will, it is thought, be
perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
An anti-rail spreader comprising two companion members each including a body provided adjacent one of its ends with a rail engaging lip and its said end being formed with a threaded orifice, the opposite end of each of the bodies having its inner face widened to provide a widened head Copies of thispatent may be obtained for which is formed with ajrail engaging lip,- the said head being formed with anotch ends of the respective sections, a'connecting member passing 7 centrally V and laterally through the members, and threaded 'adjusting members passing through the heads and entering the pockets andengaging with the V threaded ends of the sections received in the 7 said pockets. 7
