Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23,
Application filed May 28, 1914. Serial No. 841,649.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MGCLELLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Partitions; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a standard base and has for its principal object to provide a base for the standard of a closet or like partition, wherein the standard may be adjustably supported and with which the standard may be closely assembled to obviate crevices within which dirt may accumulate, and sharp edges against which a mop cloth or a persons clothing might catch. In accomplishing this object I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved standard base illustrating its use in connection with a closet partition. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical. section of the base, illustrating the mounting of the standard therein.
Referring more in detail to the drawings,
and briefly to the construction of the partition with which the base is used, in order to better demonstrate the purposes of the improvement:l designates the wall of a partition, having a hollow housing 2 at its forward edge provided with anchoring caps 3-4 at its upper and lower ends. Extending through the housing and fixed to the caps 3-4, in order to support the partition, is a standard 5, here shown to constitute an ordinary length of metal pipe, the lower end of which is provided with screw threads 6 and is projected into the standard base, its upper end being projected above the top of the housing and connected with a cross bar 7 preferably by an ornamental'fitting 8.
The standard base 8' comprises a base flange 9 having apertures 10, through which bolts or other fastening devices may be proconstruct the barrel 11 with an interior flange 14:, having screw threads on its face for receiving the threaded end of the standard 5, so that the standard may be adjusted in the cap by turningthe standard on its screw threaded connections with the flange 14 to vary the elevation of the standard and the front end of the partition with which the standard is connected.
In using the invention, the flange 9 is fixed permanently to the floor of a building in which a partition or like structure is to be erected and the standard post threaded into the barrel 11 to level the cross braces at the top of the partition, the partition housing being permanently or securely attached to the standard post when the parts have been leveled in order to hold the said partition in place.
By locating the threaded flange below the top of the barrel, the threaded connections between the barrel and standard is made wholly within the barrel, and the portion of the standard that bears against the top of the barrel is left smooth to enhance the appearance ofthe structure and provide a close joint at the top of the barrel that ob-- viates the collection of dust or other matter that would result in an unsanitary condition of the structure. It is also apparent that with this construction the standard post may be re-adjusted as to height if necessary, by merely turning the standard on its threaded connection with the standard base. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a standard base comprising an upstanding barrel portion having inturned top and intermediate flanges, and a standard fitted snugly within the end flange and supported by the intermediate flange.
ably mounted in the base and the upper end 2. The combination with a standard havof the base closed by frictional contact with ing a threaded portion, of a base for the the standard.
