Specificatioii of Letters Patent.

This invention relates to storage and shipping boxes for heavy articles such as bottles containing liquids. I
The object of the invention is to provide ina covered box capable of being stacked with other similar boxes an improved hinged construction so positioned that the box cover may be held substantially vertical when in its open position.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section through the hinge device and adjacent parts of one box and the lower edge and bottom parts of another box stacked upon the first box. Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section through the hinge device and adjacent parts, the cover being shown in open position.
The box is formed of sixrectangular sections of sheet metal constituting the side walls 1,1, end walls 2, 2,-tl1e bottom 3 and the cover or top 4. The end and side sections are seamed together along their vertical edges. The bottom section is seamed with the lower edges of the side and end sections in flat outwardly extending horizontal flanges 5; The end walls are formed with the hand hold brackets 13, serves to reinforce and stiffen the box against lateral stresses. The cover lis formed of a rectangular sheet of metal, the four edges of which are curled to form a bead 14, which incloses the reinforcing wire 15. This cover in all its parts lies, when in closed position, in a horizontal plane below the plane of the bead 10. Thus when the, cover is closed, no parts of a box below interfere with the stacking flange 8 of the box above. The cover is hinged to one of the side walls by means of the strap 16. Each of these straps is a piece of sheet metal bent back upon itself at its ends 16 and bent to form a cylindrical head 16. The'ends 16 which rest flat against eachother are insert ed downward through the slots 12 in flange 12 and are secured to the side wall 2 by means of the rivets 16.

This stacking flange is adapted to project downward within the upper edges of the box below and to engage laterally such upper edges 'to prevent horizontal movement of either box with respect to the other.

This flange 12 is disposed well below the bead 10. The four parts of this flange along the four lateral walls of the box respectively, are united at the corners by means of the brackets 13, the two vertical walls of each of which are riveted to the side and end walls'of the box respectively, and the upper horizontal wall of which is riveted to the ends of the adjacent sections of the flange 12. This flange not only supports the cover, but in conjunction with the cover is supported flush with the upper edges of the box. The hinge straps are held securely in position by the rivets 16 and by the walls of the slots 12*"- and will not be torn from position nor distorted under the heavy strains put upon them when the cover is opened and closed. A simple strong hinge-strap held securely in position is particularly to be desired to resist the strains put upon it bythe cover which is limited in its movement to an up right open position.
What I claim is 1. In a metal packing box, the combination of lateral sheet metal walls formed with beads at their upper edges, a cover arranged to lie between the walls below the horizontal plane of the said beads when in normal position, a support for the cover, hinge devices each secured to the lateral walls and provided with a hinge element to which the edge of the cover is pivotally fastened, the axis of the hinge being disposed below the top edge'of the box and adjacent to the lateral.wall to which the hinge is secured,
vwhereby the cover, when raised, is supported in an upright position, a bottom structure having a peripheral supporting flange constructed to engage with and rest upon the" beads at the upper edges of the walls of a similar box underneath, and a downward extending stacking flange on the bottom positioned inside the supporting flange and arranged to laterally .abut the beaded upper edges of the walls of a. similarbox underneath to prevent lateral displacement of one box with respect to the other.
2. In a metal-packing box, the combination of lateral sheet metal walls formed with heads at their upper edges, a cover arranged port for the cover, hinge devices each comprising a strap secured to one of the lateral walls and bent around the reinforcing wire of the cover to form a pivotal connection,
the axis of said connection being disposed below the top edge of the box and adjacent to the lateral wall to which the hinge strap is secured, whereby the coverywhen raised, is supported in an upright position, a bottom structure having a peripheral supporting flange constructed to engage with and rest upon the heads at the upper edges of the walls of a similar box underneath, and a downward extending stacking flange on the bottom positioned inside the supporting flange and arranged to laterally abut the beaded upper edges of the walls of a similar box underneath to prevent lateral displacement of one box with respect to the other.
3. In a metal box, the combination of sheet metal lateral walls, a cover, means for supporting the cover in closed position within the lateral walls comprising an inward extending flange secured to the lateral walls of the box in a. horizontal plane below the top edge of the box, said flange being slotted longitudinally at points along one wall of the box, and binge devices for securing the cover to the box, each comprising a pivot element secured to the cover and a strap having a flat part extending downward through one of the slots in the flange and a sleeve part disposed above the flange and embracing the said pivot element, and means for securing the lower end of the strap to the lateral wall, the upper end of the strap being secured in position by the flange slot in which it fits.

In a metal box, the combination of lateral walls, a stacking flange secured to the box and extending downward from the bottom plane thereof and adapted to fit within and between the upper edges of a similar box when placed below it, a cover comprising a rectangular sheet of metal and a peripheral reinforcing wire about which the four edges of the cover are wrapped, anfinward extending horizontal flange secured to the lateral walls of the box in a horizontal plane below the top horizontal plane of the box and adapted to support the cover at a suflicient distance below the top horizontal plane of the box to receive the stacking flange of a box above, the flange being slotted longitudinally at points along one side of the box, and sheet metal hinge straps having tongues extending downward through the said slots and secured to the side walls of the box below the said flange and each strap further having a cylindrical bead or hinge sleeve above the said flange which encircles the said peripheral cover reinforcing wire.
