FRANK C. SCI-IOENHERR, F MILWAUKEE, WJSCONSII\T,"ASSIGNOR OF NE-HALF 'lOl JULIUS P. C. PACI''S, OF ,MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN.
wINDow-'srisn Look.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, FRNK C. Serienn- Hnnn, a citizen of the United States, and a' resident of the city of Milwaukee, county of `h/lilwaukee, and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improve# ments in lvindow-Sash Locks, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to window sash locks and has for its object the production of mechanism of this character. which will be of durable and economical construction and,
through the medium of which the sashes of a window may be securelyV locked in any position in the sash frame. l
' A further object is the production of locking mechanism as mentioned which may loeV readily and easily actuated to unlock the sashes and which generally will be of neat and efficient construction.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. rElie invention consists in the combinations land arrangements of parts hereinafteil dej will be bestV understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification. and in-which- Figure-1 is a front elevation of aV portion of a window frame and sashes mounted therein to which is applied a; sash 'locking mechanism embodying my invention, Fig. 2
is a fragmental perspective View of the win-l dow sashes shown in Fig. 1 detached, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the upper end portion of the locking mechanism, Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on lines-x of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a section taken on line g/-y of Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings is shown applied to a window construction Vconsisting of a sash frame 1 in which are mounted sashes 2 and 2 for sliding movement in said frame in the usual manner. The lateral edges of the sashes 2 and 2 at one side of the window are provided with metal strips 3 in which are formed spaced openings 4 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
rEhe mechanism sashes in position coperates with the openings 4 of strips 3, comprising bolts 5 which are mounted in the sash frame 1 so that the outer ends of said bolts register with the "f openings 4 of the strips 3, as clearly shownl Speccation of Letters Patent.
shown in Fig. 1.
for locking the window in Fig. 5. l' bolts' are slidably mounted i in bearings 6 formed upon a plate 6 which issecured rigidly to the frame 1 in the sash Vweight opening thereof, said bearing porof said boltsby'means of a connecting rod y Patented Oct. 12, 1915. i appiizmonfuedruiya;1911i.v seriaiuaeaves.
-nected so as to effect 'simultaneous movement or yoke 7 Said rod 7 is engaged inedially 7 of its'ends'by oneend of'a bell crank lever 8 which isfulcrumed upon'a rod 9 sup# ported adjacent the lever 8' by ears 1-0 projecting from plate 6', the'ends of said rod 9 being secured in the opposite walls of a rectangular housing 11 inclosing the inner ends of said bolts 5 and the mechanism co- A 'operating therewith. The housing 11 is se cured by means of screws 112 to the plate 6', said screws passing through ears 13 formed at the edges of said housing projecting out-A wardly therefrom. The opposite endv of the bell crank lever is pivotally connected Ywith .the upper endjof a'yerti'cally extending rod 14 which is mountedfor vertical movement in thetubularlhousin'gl dependingfrom the housing "11. The lower V.end of the rod 14 is connected with one end ofva bell crank lever 16 which is fulcr'umed'at 17 in a'housplate 6 which is fastened by screws 21 to the sash frame 1.V The opposite end of bell crank lever 16 is connected with ythe inner end of a stem 22. The outer end of said Vstem carries a buttonV or presser membery 23 threaded thereon which is slidably mounted in a tubular extension 24 ofthe housing 18.
AThe outer end of button 28 projects exteriorly for manualengagement, the locati'onof said button being preferably adjacent the under side of the window sill asvclearly lnterposed between the button 23 and the :adjacent wall of housing 18 is a helical compression spring 25. Said spring serves as will be seen to normally Vpress said button 23.outwardly and which in turn, through the voperative connection of the inner end of stem 22 with vthe bolts 5,
ico
established by bell cranks k8 and 16 and connecting rod 14, serves to normally press said bolts outwardly for engagement 'with the Y openings 4 ofthe window sashes. With this arrangement then it will be'seen that the window sashes will be normally locked in position in the sash frame, being unlocked,
through depression of the button 23 which serves, as will be readily observed, to retract the bolts A5 from engagement with openings 4L. i
ln order to prevent Contact of the sash weights provided-in the sash weight opening precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail ,myself` of such variations' and modifications as come within the'scope ofthe appended claims.rv i Having described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure .byd Letl ters Patent is:
l. The combination of a window frame and a pair of sashes slidably mounted there# in, said sashes having spaced lopenings in corresponding lateral edges'thereof; apa'irk of bolts slidably mounted in said frame adjacent said edges of said sashes for engagement with said openings; means for simultaneously moving said boltsinto and outof engagement with said openings, said means comprising a vertically movable member? a bell crank lever arranged between the rearward ends of said bolts; a yoke operatively connecting one end of said bell crank lever with the rearward ends of said bolts,l 'the opposite end of said bell crank lever being Copies of this patent may be obtained for of'bolts slidably mounted in said frame adl f jacent said edges of said sashes for engagement with said openings; means for simultaneously moving said bolts into and out of engagement with said openings, said means comprising a vertically movable member; a w
bell crank lever arranged between said bolts having one end operatively connected with one end of said member with said bolts whereby, upon vertical movement of said member, said bolts will be simultaneously operated; lmanually depressible means; a bell crank lever operatively connecting said depressible'meanswith the opposite end of said lever whereby, upon depression of said depressible means, said member' will be actuated to inove said bolts to inoperative position; and a compression Vspring cooperating with said Vc lep'ressible means for normally holding Isaid bolts inoperative position, substantiallyas described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my naine toi this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
