COMBINED RAIL-BRACE AND ANCHOR TIE-PLATE,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. ARLEDGE, citizen of the United States, residing at lVinchester, in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rail-Braces and Anchor Tie-Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be' a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rail brace and anchor tie plate for use in securing railway rails on the ties and to pre vent the rails from spreading or creeping, the object of the invention being to provide improved devices of this kind which are cheap and simple, which may be readily installed and which are extremely strong and durable.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a combined rail. brace and anchor tie plate constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use for securing a rail on a tie. Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the rail omitted, and on a different plane from that of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views of the members of the rail brace and anchor tie plate, showing the same separated. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the combined rail brace and anchor tie plate.
My improved combined rail brace and tie plate comprises a pair of members l2 which are respectively provided with upstanding flanges 34 on their upper sides near their outer ends. Each of said members is a rectangular plate of iron or steel that when the members are assembled the width of the space between the flanges 34 corresponds with that of the base of a rail so that said flanges bear against opposite sides of the rail base as shown in Fig. 1. The said members are provided with spike receiving openings 5 which openings are coincident with and ex tend through the flanges as shown. The member 1 has a rabbet 10 on its under side and the member 2 has a corresponding rabbet 11 on its upper side so that when the members are assembled they are arranged in overlapping relation, the inner edge of the member 1 baring against a shoulder 12 formed in the member 2 and the inner edge of the member 2 bearing against a shoulder 13 formed in the member 1. To secure the said members together the member l is provided with openings 14 and with beveled projections 15 on its lower side and the member 2 is provided with openings 16 and beveled said projections 17 being adapted to fit in the openings 14 and said projections 15 being adapted to fit in the openings 16 as shown. After the members have been thus arranged and the rail placed thereon the spikes are driven down into the tie through the openings 5 and their heads are caused to engage over the base flanges of the rails, as shown in Fig. 1 so that the brace and anchor tie plates and the rail are firmly secured on the tie.
Owing to the interlocking connection be-- tween the members, afforded by the openings and projections with which said members are provided, the members are eflectually prevented from moving ing action occasioned by the inclined ends of said openings and projections causes the plates to be clamped firmly against opposite sides of the rail bases under weight of passing trains so that the rails are prevented from creeping. The combined brace and anchor tie plate also effectually prevents spreading of the rails.
Having thus described my invention, I claim V 1. 3. The herein described combined rail five cents each, by addressing the brace and anchor tie plate comprising a pair of members each having a flange on its upper side to bear against one side of a rail base, said members being arranged in overlapping relation, each having a rabbet to receive the other, and said members having openings and projections forming an interlocking connection between them, said members also having spike receiving openings extending therethrough and through their flanges, and one of said members being further provided with downwardly extending studs adapted to be driven into a tie.
